Cool, didn't see the male part, so didn't recognize it. I've used "Z" extensions for years at work. There are times you need lateral offsets and the ability to torque backwards on some of our installations due to clearance needs.

Torque wrench was another reason I bought both of them. I just haven’t needed it for that yet. Wish I could find one in 3/8” drive.

I may have missed it all together, but did you every decide on where to mount the vice?

Also, adding lights to what? The bays/drawers of the truck or just around it in general?

May be Overkill, but I've covered my Silverado. Used to do overnight work outside, can't stand working in the dark.

Worked great for launching boats/hooking up trailers.

About 100$ worth of Amazon lights. d2af9821835d6f4f3b8a82f388c974bb.jpg

Really nice work on the service truck[emoji481]. I realize it will always be a work in progress but it’s looking good.

ALMOST makes me want to set one up even though I don’t even NEED one these days. [emoji23]

On the truck:
- LED lights on the rear corners of the bed facing down and out over the bumper (workbench) and area immediately around the truck. https://43193f84-a-62cb3a1a-s-sites...4s4NkWy0-DvlQ39v4KIuR3m3jDkP4=&attredirects=0
1-2 LED lights in a headache rack up high facing down into bed. 1 LED light facing off the side of the truck from the headache rack. Maybe you should look into one of the rotating magnetic mount worklights. https://www.ebay.com/i/252979652120?chn=ps

- Metal 5gal buckets would be ok for fluid storage so they don't wear as fast as the jugs.
- I would strap spares to the headache rack or etrack up front. Or do one of those western style mounts and put the truck spare up front on the grille.http://www.simulationfx.com/TireMount2_sm.jpg

Cut up a cheap extension and weld the ends on a piece of flat bar... Or punch a square hole in one end and weld in a Tite-Reach adapter in the other...

I’ve considered doing that before but never thought about a tite-reach adaptor. That could work

I think I had posted the update on the vise. I mounted it on the passenger side of the rear bumper. Added a piece of angle iron on there to support it. It’s worked good so far.

I’ve mainly just been wanting to add a light or two to the side and/or rear to have as a work light for dark. I know there are a lot of options. But some sort of light in a few of the boxes may not be a bad idea either.

Thanks. Yes it will definitely be a work in progress for quite a while. I am glad I have it though. It beats my old ‘91 1/2 ton 2wd short bed Silverado I used to have. It pretty well has just some of the basics and that was about all I could do.

I like those light options.

I also considered the bumper mount for the spare. I’m just not 100% sure about it. Especially blocking air to the radiator during the summer. But I’ve been keeping it as an option.

So I know I’ve delayed a bit.

Friday was a pretty busy day. The start of deer season makes things crazy. I’m the only one who seems to remember there are other things that still need to be done.

Stated the day unloading the fuel for the pulling tractors dad picked up Thursday.

It’s some expensive ****!
0f33daea2ca52515b531a7ae2a2fee0c.jpg
Dad did manage to talk the guy into giving him several stickers for once though.

We had a few other jobs to do. Check on the cattle and things like that. But the firearms portion of deer season started Saturday so dad was frantic to get things set for that. Which included moving the Kubota and my grandpa’s Polaris Ranger to be ready for hunting in the morning. Also, getting things out to the “cabin” for all of us to stay at.

While picking up my grandpa’s Ranger I snapped a pic of his Plymouth Duster.

It’s a pretty nice ride. Almost all original. He had one just like it before that was green (a very rare original green). Needless to say it doesn’t see a whole lot of actual driving anywhere.

After moving things...
adee86c4ed9ae9ba0f758613d1b3900a.jpg
...we headed back to the farm. Dad has been wanting to have a cow butchered for awhile. Most of the meat shops get majorly backed up with deer this time of year so beef gets put off awhile. One of the places said if he’s drop a cow off Monday they could do it for him. So we loaded up a few older cows.
a9277754649eba271c7e92a84e303c2d.jpg
One of them is started to get pretty old and slow, the other 3 haven’t had a calf this year and don’t look to be bred to be having one soon either. So we loaded them up (after dealing with their stubbornness of wanting to get on the trailer for about 25 minutes) and took them to the lot with those few (formerly sick) calves.

That just about wrapped up the whole day and it was time to load things up to take to the grandparent’s cabin for the night.

The weekend was nothing but hunting. Cloudy skies and a big sudden drop in temperatures. So we didn’t think we’d be able to get back to beans if we wanted to. My grandparents, parents, sister, brother-in-law, nephew, my girlfriend and I all stay at my grandparents lake house for the weekend as it’s only a few miles for my grandpa’s woods.

It was an unsuccessful weekend although we did see several deer. It’s hardly any service anywhere so the phone is pretty much shut off. It’s pretty nice. Other than the fact that I was ready for below freezing temps just yet.

So Friday I discovered some bad news. Turns out the service truck isn’t fixed. The low coolant light has came on Thursday yet again. Sure enough it was low. I added some to the full point. By Friday morning the light was on yet again. The guy at the shop told dad he’d left his pressure tester on the cooling system for over a full day and claimed it never lost a pound of pressure.

Friday I put my pressure tester on the truck. Pumped it up and left it. A little over 3 hours later I came back and checked the gauge. Sure enough it had slowly leaked off to less than half of the pressure it should have. Worse part? None of the coolant was on the ground or seen leaking out externally anywhere on the engine ....so not sure what I’m going to do with that problem yet.

Monday back at it for a bit.

I drove around and checked on the cattle. Put out some more hay as their slowly starting to eat a bit more.

I also drove out to the retirement farm to feed some hay. Since dad’s friend is currently using the 3020, which we always leave at the retirement farm during the winter, the landlord was nice enough to let me use their 4010.
7ff0a35a56a7d0272e1f50354afa4457.jpg
The loader is kind of some sort of home made rig. Not exactly the stoutest or best loader I’ve used. But it can put out a bale of hay. I’ve used it several times before over the years. It’s a good tractor. Could use some repairs to fix some oil leaks and what not but I’ve seen much worse. They don’t hardly ever use it anymore, especially since the father passed earlier this year. So it just sits in their shed. I think they’re just happy someone is using it for something.

So today was still very cool and cloudy. The meteorologists were all calling for mixed ice, snow, and rain to arrive this evening. So with that talk dad decided we should head to the woods. So we did. He ended up shooting 2 does...while I ended up with nothing...again.

Luckily, the meteorologist are wrong (imagine that). The wintery mix somehow completely broke apart about the time it was getting to us. That’s fine by me.

In other news I had a few eBay purchases arrive over the weekend.

A Snap-On 2-1/8” flarenut crowfoot and a NOS Bonney/Utica 1-5/8” and 2” flarenut crowfoot wrenches. Just a little over $40 shipped for the 3 of them. Seemed like a pretty good deal. I know I won’t need the 2-1/8” hardly at all. But it’ll be nice to have if I do need it. The have the other 2 sizes in my Snap-On set in the shop. But I thought what the hell, maybe I can start putting together a set for the truck? The Bonney ones ever came in the original box for the 2” crowfoot.

Greetings!
If it were my truck I would test to see if their were any presence of hydrocarbons in the coolant.
https://www.acustrip.com/cgi-bin/proddesc.cgi?s=480508
I would also do a leakdown test to see if I could push coolant out. This would also tell you the condition of the overall motor and may determine you have bad "headgasket".
I assume the oil doesn't look like a milkshake, so I would bet bad headgasket or worse cracked head.

I’m pretty positive it is definitely a head or head gasket issue. It had any issue in that area before I got it. However, if I remember correctly the main issue was on the engine block side of the head gasket. Which is why I have a feeling it could mean a new engine. That was also what the mechanic said too.

Might have to hit up the "mechanic" first. :headscrat

I talked to him. He suggested trying a new head gasket but mentioned, due to problems it’s had in the past, it may just mean a new engine. Which he said he has. However, he was sure to mention he has a lot of money wrapped up in that engine...

I moreso meant him "fixing" it the last time. :headscrat

I have worked on a couple of motors that did this and both of them turned out to be cracked head. Both customers had changed out the head gaskets and that seemed to fix the problem for a few months only to have the problem come back.
Their may be a benefit to pressurizing the coolant system over a couple of days with the spark plugs out and see if you can see any coolant down in the cylinder, this may narrow the search for the problem.
Not sure if this is an option for you since your so busy.
Good luck on your quest!

It’s a 6.5 diesel. From my understanding head issues with them is quite common. But I talked to the mechanic today snooty possibly working something out. I’ll just have to see how things go.

My brother has the same engine in his ambulance he uses for work. When he bought it in an auction they said it had bad head gaskets he spent a lot of money and time on it.They put new head gasket check the heads said they where fine. Then the next guy tried new heads they were no good then He took it to the Chevy dealer and the put a new motor in it now it runs good.

So I’ve been delayed the last few days. Things have been pretty busy. By Tuesday we decided to get back in the field. It took awhile to get all the equipment and trucks moved to the bottom. So it was about afternoon by the time we were able to start.
2816763d548868da1add146659e2bcfa.jpg
It’s hard to see but we had both combines going in the bottom. Both combines going meant I had to get with unloading trucks.

Wednesday was the same. A quick rush to get things done since there was talk of snow by nightfall. I was hauling beans to one of our bins, a landlord’s bin, and also hauled off a load for to sell for another land lord. That didn’t go as planned though. DOT and Illinois State Troopers decided to set up and pull over several trucks, which included me.
dbf8c065c6ade1b807e263ed209c9ec6.jpg
But I finally made it back. So we kept rolling. We finished up with all the beans in bottom just a little after dark. We moved all the trucks, grain cart, and combines to the shed.

Sure enough right after we got everything in the shed flurries started to fall. We were wrapped up for the evening so I stopped by the Matco guy’s house.
bee27d72d224ea26f9b1b037d43fff3d.jpg
Picked up some new items and returned his Power Probe here me try out a few weeks ago.

Sure enough the snow kept coming. It snowed all night. I’m not sure I ever remember having a snow like this in November here.

It was several inches. It came down pretty good this morning. Dad went deer hunting for awhile this morning. I pulled the Silverado in the shop.
3cc97dce09ba4a0f5021ef294e8e38ca.jpg
I finally replaced the tail gate handle and latches.
55f3357fece79f08373bc31b045b8769.jpg
So at least my tailgate closes properly again. Now I just need new latches for the camper shell back glass.

Late this morning dad and I fed hay everywhere. Especially with the snow the cattle were glad to see some hay.
7006b00b8a013ae88846291dbf314bee.jpg
After we fed hay another seed guy stopped by the shop for awhile to talk seed. It’s a brand we’ve bought before that’s been good. There just hasn’t been a salesmen in the area for several years.

A little over an hour before dark we decided to head to the woods for a bit.
82033a190d8f923f4a34ac254d7f012f.jpg
d3f929c603d8d76d253c22f990b85703.jpg
By late afternoon the sun came out and temperatures were in the mid 30’s so the snow started to melt pretty quick. Which I’m ok with the snow melting. But that also means the snow is melting. So things are going to be sloppy for awhile. Although the next several days high are supposed to be back up in the mid 50’s. It’ll be a welcome change to this week’s mid 30’s with 15mph winds.

So we still have just over 100 acres of second crop beans to cut yet. None of the ground work in the bottom is done for the fall yet either. Plus as wet as things are it looks like the possibility of drilling more wheat and more rye is quickly diminishing. It’ll likely take awhile for this latest bit of moisture to dry up. Especially, since it wasn’t even dry everywhere before this arrived.

I also called the mechanic about the truck again. He said he could check the heads and gave me a price on that. He also gave me the price on if we’d have to drop a different engine in it. Which was just under $3,000. But I’m not sure if it’s justifiable to put another $3,000 in this truck. So there has yet to be a decision made on that.

Not much to do for tomorrow. Things are too messy to do much. Since we aren’t done in the fields yet there isn’t much I can bring in the shop to start servicing. My dad and uncle leave tomorrow for a tractor pull of the weekend. So we’ll see what happens. I still haven’t got any deer meat yet. So that may have to be worked in over the weekend at some point. We’ll see.

We had an early snow here as well. Are you (all) just about done with the beans? And did you get a ticket?

I’m not much of a fan of snow. Especially when it’s early.

Yeah just about done with beans. Just a little over 100 acres to do on one more farm. So if we can have another good day, day and a half we should get them out. Now we just have to wait for things to dry again...

Yes, I did get a ticket for being overloaded. Length of the truck, plus what the truck weighed didn’t quite add up correctly for crossing a bridge like the river bridge I crossed. Which I understand some laws are in place for safety reasons. But some of them just seem a little over the top. But when some federal know it all wants to make up something that’ll bring in some extra money one way or another they’ll do it.

Sure they do allow farmers 2,000 lbs. coming out of the field...but due to the bridge law I exceeded that 2,000 lbs. limit. So they handed me a nice hefty ticket before it was all over. Me along with another farmer I know and 2 local fertilizer supplier trucks from my side of the river as well, along with 2 other trucks. Pulled us all over all at once. I don’t think there was one truck that didn’t leave with some sort of a fine. One didn’t even get to leave until he fixed a tail light.

I could go one about certain aspects of this situation for awhile. But I won’t do that or get all political about things. It’s no disrespect to the troopers either, as they’re doing what they’re supposed to do. I just don’t always agree with they’re tactics. As that areas has a lot more truck traffic than farmers, it just seems as though they know just where to set up where all the Missouri farmers come through.

So since I still didn’t have any meat in the freezer yet I set out back to the bluff pasture again Friday morning in search of a deer or two. However, I wasn’t so lucky.

I stayed in the stand til a little after one and hadn’t seen a thing all morning. I left out so I could get a few things done. Dad had shot another deer late Thursday evening so he hauled off a load of beans to free up one of the trucks. Him and my uncle left out yesterday morning for a tractor pull going on today.

The temperature reached up to the lower 50’s yesterday so the snow was melting in a hurry. So naturally things are nice and muddy now. Should be enjoyable for awhile.

Well it’s been a bit of a busy week. Did some more deer hunting...with no luck...luckily we have a doe only weekend coming up.

Did some odd jobs around the shop, helped my uncle cut up some deer meat, also finally decided to drop the truck back off to be looked at again. Especially due to the holiday I wasn’t really sure when I’d be getting it back. So I yet again unloaded things in case I were to need things.
162cc570f4b619053e997afacca41aff.jpg
So everything is stacked and piled in my corner of the shop.

Despite what the weather man said Monday and Tuesday were nothing but cloudy, we had a slight shower on Sunday, so adding that on top of the already saturated, snow melted ground, it made things muddy.

Wednesday we finally had some sunshine. But rain on the way by the end of the week. So with having a bit of an opportunity dad and I decided to try to see if we could get the last of the beans out.

Field conditions were be no means ideal, but it was dryer than we thought it would be. So we decided to go for it.

So we moved the trucks, 8400 and grain cart to the field too.

Every once in awhile we’d cut a pretty good track. But luckily it wasn’t terrible for the most part. Beans were a little tough. But were drying through the afternoon.

Tuesday we had brought the auger back down to the house. We sat it up in the empty bin yesterday morning. So I was hauling beans there.

The longer ran the drier the beans were so I told dad we better keep running while things were working good.

So we ran after dark awhile. Filled both trucks and the grain cart up. We managed to cut about 80 of the 120 acres left.

So this morning, Thanksgiving we went back at it.
d68cd29b842a38a12a801a8365d18cdd.jpg
First thing I did was check on the cattle at the retirement farm and put out a couple bales of hay for them.

I got down to the farm and first thing I did was unload the trucks from last night. There was a decent frost that had to dry off before we headed to the bean field so I fed the rest of the cattle.

I fed corn and gave them all hay as well.

After I finished feeding I headed to the bean field. Dad had already headed out.

We got right back to it.

We finished up with the smaller patches around the farm. Luckily all with no problems.
79d5a47008bf28187200f7208551b38a.jpg
So early in the afternoon we finally finished. All the crops are out for the year.

To head off tomorrow’s rain we moved everything back to the shed too.

So it’s official. Harvest 2018 is finished. A little later than usual. But it’s done. Unfortunately, we planned to drill this same farm in rye for the winter. Not sure that’ll be able to happen anymore though. Same with drilling some wheat in the bottom. We also have none of the ground in the bottom worked for the fall. But the bins are full, crops are all out. So that’s a win, as long as the markets go up a bit...

So rain for Friday and a chance for Sunday. We’ll be hauling off some grain to pay some end of the bills. Hopefully now I can get started on getting some stuff pulled in the shop to work on. I’d like to start over the weekend. Unfortunately, there are thanksgiving get togethers for the next 3 days...so...I’m not sure it’ll happen.

Glad you were able to get the last of harvest in. I get a real small sense of the risk farmers face every year. I have a very small farm that has a high clay soil content. Waiting for the fields to dry in the spring so I can get the soil worked with the tractors without making a mass of dirt clods from the soil being too wet. Out here in Oregon we can get 30 - 45 days of rain in the spring that will keep the ground wet. Then in the end of the season its difficult to end the harvest when everything is at its peak. My wife and I have been trying to amend the clay soil real heavy for the last 5 years by discing organics like pine straw that we get tons of every year. If we wait too late in the season we cant get the soil prepped for planting the winter rye. One year we had to leave everything in the fields to just rot. Fall came on like a light switch, "click" and it was wet from that point on. The "window" for to start and stop the growing season is very small sometimes. I have a large amount of respect for the farmers that face these issues on a much grander scale than me. Take some time and enjoy the down time, you have earned it, I would also recommend a cold malty beverage.

Had a few days break for multiple Thanksgiving get togethers Friday-Sunday. I’m not really much of a fan of holidays.

But I’ll sum up the good parts of it with that picture there.

A bit of rain Friday and a little more Sunday left things a little wet again. Had some major winds yesterday and last night bring in a cold front. It brought enough wind to blow open my storm door and screw it up.

Started the day feeding hay to all the cattle.

Ground a batch of feed.

Dad picked up a ton of mineral, a ton of protein buckets, and a ton of supplements to mix with feed.

Dad had some errands to run. So I headed to that last farm we finished up at to mow around the fields.
a18364ca3c9e576a669ed1aa0b9ef866.jpg
That farm also has a large area that we can’t actually farm. So we mow paths every fall for some rabbit hunting. So between hunting paths and mowing the field edges it took up the afternoon and took til after dark to finish up. But it’s all mowed. So I’m hoping to get a start on getting tractors and equipment pulled in the shop for service. I hope I can get something in there this week.

No word on the truck yet either. I’d be surprised if they even got to it today yet.

Despite the fact we have harvest wrapped up there are plenty of jobs on the to-do list. We have to play catch up on everything else. Especially, since we’re a little further behind that usual due to all the weather mishaps this fall.
