So since we left off we got a few things done.

For starters I rebuilt the second set of SCV couplers on the 4020.

That set went a lot smoother than the other set.

So I got it back together over the weekend and everything appears to be leak free so far.

My little tool came in handy too.

Push the spring down with the prongs and wiggle the clip on with some forceps. I tried to use the special little e-clip tool I’ve used before.

But it just wasn’t working for me this go round. Especially to suppress the springs. Not to mention it hardly fits in the opening anyway.

Dad has been putting some money into that work out 3 row planter.

I think one more seed tube and it’ll be ready to roll.

Last week I was able to finally use my b-i-l’s lift to replace the fuel pump in my Silverado.

So it’s rolling again. Over the weekend I replaced the rear brakes, new pads, rotors, one new caliper, and new park brake shoes and hardware.

It’s pretty much ready to go now. Just need an oil change and look everything over a bit. I was going to do the oil change this evening...but I realized I didn’t have a filter...

It’ll be nice to get it back on the road for an occasional rainy weekend drive. I think I’m going to make my girlfriend start driving it back and forth to work once in awhile so it gets a little extra use.

Nice looking truck!

It looks better in the picture than in person. Classic truck problems. The fender wells on the bed are starting to rust and one of the cab corners is too. Not as nice as it was about 5 years ago.

It’s an ‘02 and just under 119,00 in it. Really doesn’t have any issues or leaks on it. Everything til the fuel pump has been pretty good. But at about 90,000 I had to have the transmission rebuilt. Classic situation with that transmission, just not that mileage. But my mom drove a Yukon for years with the same engine and transmission for years, had over 220,000 and never had an issue.

Yeah, the 4l60s are finicky. Not much else that will go wrong with that truck now, minus the rust.

Yes they can. I hope I don’t have to worry about anything for awhile on that truck. I’ve tried to take good care of it. So hopefully it will last me awhile.

So we’ve had a few rains in between everything but we’d finished up on planting corn. So last week I got the planter all ready to go for beans.
View attachment 1010932
So the next day we were ready to roll.
View attachment 1010933
Loaded up some beans and we were ready to go to the field.
View attachment 1010934
We got up the road and started loading the planter with beans and not sure how but one of the fittings on the hydraulic pump for the auger on the auger wagon broke.
View attachment 1010935
So quick run to the shop for a fitting and we were good to go.
View attachment 1010936
Luckily I’d just put that new easy out set in the truck and had it to take out the broken part of the fitting that was still screwed in the pump. Already worth the purchase.
View attachment 1010937
Lost a good half gallon or more of oil from the break so Macnaught pump to the rescue for the pump for auger wagon.

So we made a pass in the field, reset the depth wheels and down pressure springs and got my uncle on the go.
View attachment 1010938
So since we were able to plant that meant we were finally able to try out that new Deere planter.
a0381c15a3b1ded5fa29119a5006392e.jpg
Not too bad. Only fancy thing on it is the pneumatic down pressure. Which I can definitely see an advantage to...but dads not so sure. I wasn’t able to run it cuz dad hogged it all day. But he didn’t seem to think it was bad. He’s not a fan of the newer tractor though. He said the monitor just kept making all kinds of noises and beeps and flashes of stuff on the screen. He said he could do without that ****. He also refused to even try the guidance on the tractor, insisting that he wasn’t too good to use the markers on the planter. Which is fine. But I thought I’d try to push him a little out of his comfort zone.

So both planters were rolling at the same farm so I had to keep up with them. One of the arms/linkage/whatever you want to call it on our Kinze planter that sets the gauge wheel for the depth on the row broke off. We’ve never had that happen before so I don’t have one on hand. But luckily we were close to the New Holland/Kinze dealer was closer than the shop anyway. Apparently it must not be a common issue because they only had one in stock.
9f92c97d8953429777cf45bd5ad830c4.jpg
So just a quick repair and it was planting again.
5ac07ab98c7a7feb345a21bdf66fd9f4.jpg
With two planters going we went through beans quicker than usual so after making the repair I went back to the shop to load up more beans64875bb8ac7da6be83131c3464b9ff50.jpg
bcfcb0c5ee2a3a71e03b736f310a76bb.jpg
Hard to see but we had Deere vs. Kinze going on at two farms.

e8a18ef0fd55d2dd4985e9baf5a12c7b.jpg
So I kept both loaded up with beans.

We only got to use the Deere for the day and that was it. Someone else was going to get to try it out.
c3bebd1e2c183b8c69cf5a5ba45e486d.jpg
But I did get to take it down the highway. I wasn’t aware that 6155R would do 29. That’s getting it going down the road with that planter. That planter isn’t exactly light either. But then we had rain and it kept us out of the field for the weekend.

By Monday we were able to start again.
58daacd2e9872f1716f35e1a61d9282d.jpg
Dad set out to drill some beans while my uncle planted beans. So I got my uncle moved and loaded and ready to go.
2d2fdad03b49337ad257fbc92b5c25ad.jpg
Then got dad ready to go. But then he had some technical difficulties. For some reason the drill monitor completely reset itself again. It did that last spring at the beginning of the season.

Back down the road and got my uncle loaded with beans again. Then over to the hay shed to pull out more seed beans.

6361ea7e69bfde82301b58fb4624c8bf.jpg
Got them ready for the drill.

So Tuesday morning we were due for more rain. At least by the afternoon. So we parked the planter.
105db8a9bb8bd2527b263f00d88ea5f7.jpg
I parked everything else in the shed.

Got dad loaded up to finish the farm where he was at. Then I met him down the road to load up and do another farm that had a 25 acre field to do. He finished it up just before some sprinkles set in.
12d42c3739d28740ab50213881f5bf45.jpg
But we greased it up, fueled up the tractor, and replaced several closing wheel springs.
606400c7177d22310f22ff16bc148f6b.jpg
Somehow about 10 of them broke off.
025dbcdbcbfae8d0b93f5382cc14c5d3.jpg
Also had an a/c issue on the 8400, luckily it was just a fuse.

So after that a light rain did set in. So the drill went to the shed.

On Mother’s Day we took the day off. But I did go by the retirement farm to bring the 3020 down the road.
IMG_1131.jpg
After the rain set in the other day I gave it much needed wash job.
IMG_1156.jpg
Parked it in the shop yesterday too.
IMG_1162.jpg
It’s overdue for a service.

Yesterday I finished servicing the Silverado.
IMG_1161.jpg
Finally took it back home!

Finally got the 3 row planter back together and out too.
IMG_1163.jpg
It’s ready to go for beans in the food plots.

So with the planter and the truck out I pulled the F550 in because it’s due for service too!
IMG_1164.jpg
I at least got the oil drained before I left yesterday.

Before I left dad showed up with this.
IMG_1165.jpg

A local guy had it. It’s a women’s bike. But it’s a ‘72 John Deere bike. Looks to be pretty much all original. The guy said his dad got it new with the purchase of a new tractor back in ‘72 but once other kids started making fun of him for it being a girl’s bike he said he quit riding it, that’s why it stayed in such good shape.

Dad said he had an all yellow John Deere bike as a kid but he doesn’t know what ever happened to it. Said he thought this would go good with the rest of the Deere collection sitting around the farm.

...I’m starting to think he’s not paying as close attention to the grain markets as I am...

So we arrive today.
View attachment 1010965
Checked the cows. We’d had a decent rain the other day so it was still to wet to plant.
View attachment 1010966
So I ground 3 batches of feed.
IMG_1174.jpg
One for bucket feeding
IMG_1176.jpg
One for the big calves.
IMG_1177.jpg
One for the feeders for small calves all still with the cows.

It was a pretty nice and breezy day. One of the few May feeling days so far.
IMG_1175.jpg

Put out hay for the calves.
IMG_1178.jpg
Cleaned up the weening lot and water trough over at my uncle’s today too.

Then this evening dad and I weened 8 calves out of 2 of the groups of cows. Got a few more to ween but we’ll probably have to wait a day or so for them. So we put the calves in the lot over at my uncle’s.

Dad parked the bike in the shop today too...

So looks like no planting again for a few days, good chance of storms rolling through tomorrow and all weekend. So no field activities for awhile. But I’ll still have plenty to do. Service the F550, F250, my uncle’s truck, the 3020, and then I’ll probably start on the 4010. I want to give it a good service, change the filters finally. Going to put a different brake valve on it, replace the plate under the fuel tank and radiator, put the front weights on it, and work on the selective control valve that’s leaking on it, as well as work on the selective control valve couplers that I worked on last summer that are still leaking. So more than enough to do.

Markets are still about the same on everything. No much has changed.

Most local businesses are somewhat starting to get back to normal around here.

Weather is looking good for next week. Another 60 acres of beans to go in the hills. The bottom ground is gradually drying, but the fields are loaded with weeds since we haven’t been able to get in them. So as of now the plan is to just go in and do a burn down with the sprayer on the weeds after things dry from the rains we’re due to get. Then just no till the beans in. It’d take several days to work the ground, get the weeds down, and get things all leveled up in decent shape to plant beans. So spraying and no till may be the quick, easier option.

If we can get the rest of the beans done it won’t be long and we’ll have to start on some hay. Despite all the cool temperatures lately the grass seems to really be growing the last couple weeks. Plenty to keep busy. Then before we know it we’ll have to be ready to combine the 200 acres of wheat.

I’ve been trying to come up with a few ways to cut down on what I don’t need in the truck yet consolidate and organize things better to allow for more room for more things I could use on the truck, but also be able to find things quick.

I’ve been thinking about possibly trying to utilize the doors on the boxes for some storage as well. Not sure what I want to do though.

In addition to tools I’m also trying to reorganize on hardware. Eliminating things I haven’t needed in the past and trying to come up with things I will possibly need. I’m ok with keeping various and miscellaneous bolts that I could possibly use. So I’ve been looking some of the equipment over to see what sizes I’d be most likely to need. That way I can have what I need and eliminate some of the bolts that I may never need. Plus that way, especially with length I’ll be sure to have the right stuff.

I think the truck is a project I’ll never be finished with. But it’s a work in progress. I just want to have majority of what I might need, especially for simple, quick fixes.

The pneumatic or hydraulic down pressure kits are the slickest additions for planting in variable soil conditions. Coupled with all the other stuff, they let you dial in your seed depth and closing forces, and will adjust on the fly as the soil conditions change over the field being worked. The guys I watch on youtube love them on their planters. Dial it in for a 2” seed depth and enough pressure for closure with 100% seed contact and away they go for hundreds of acres without needing a change.

Might have to do like the cows say Eat mor chikn :)

Considering I haven't been able to till my 15x40 garden, you've made great progress on corn and beans!

" I think the truck is a project I’ll never be finished with. But it’s a work in progress. I just want to have majority of what I might need, especially for simple, quick fixes. "

Maybe have separate box for planting versus harvest versus hay and rotate as needed? If you're trying to haul it all, you're going to need a bigger truck :) You've got the equipment to help load and unload the boxes without having to empty them out each time. Just a thought.

As someone who works in Guidance at Deere, Im sorry to hear your dad didn't want to try it. Skipping out on free SF3 is a loss in my opinion. Just wait til you see the cool things coming in the near future. On the other hand, my grandfather could freehand a straighter line than some guidance systems, so I get the comfort zone angle.

As for the beeps and flashes, if you spend enough time with the newer displays, many of those can be turned off, and sometimes eliminated. Volume control works for many notifications, but things like Guidance collision warnings won't quiet down at all. Planting can often have a lot going on on the screen due to the nature of everything being monitored. In an ideal world, its all green and not much flashing, but we all know how often a perfect situation occurs. It simply takes too much time to get to know and customize all the little details for a single day demo unfortunately. I have to do some of that ahead of time for demos I participate in.

Definitely agree that the truck will never be finished. Most on here do the same thing in their garages, but you are trying to make it count where you need it the most: time.

Glad you/he liked the planter generally, I haven't gotten to play with one yet.

I think that and row shut off are definitely two things that wouldn’t be a bad idea to invest in on a planter if we ever trade off our Kinze. I think those two options for sure make a decent difference.

Yeah the cattle price versus the price on the counter in the store is pretty ridiculous. I’m not sure who thinks that’s fair. But it’s a little out of hand if you ask me.

I’ve been thinking of the box idea as far as parts. Last fall I kept a lot of the header parts for both combines in a box to keep in the truck that I could easily take in and out when I didn’t need it. I picked up a few other boxes over winter to do just what you said for hay making and planting. I didn’t actually put a box together for the planter. But luckily the one part last week has been the only time we’ve had an issue with anything.

Yeah dad definitely listed off several likes and dislikes to me about both the tractor and the planter. There were some things he didn’t care for too much on the planter. I do think the advertisement on that planter is a little misleading, how the advertise to be run with the likes of the 4440, but that’s only if you go with the basic setup. I think some guys think that means they can still run a 4440 on it with the all extras like vacuum meters, row shut offs and everything else.

I figured there was ways to take care of some of the noise on the tractor. But like you said for a quick one day run it wasn’t worth spending the time to try and figure it out. Dad really isn’t a fan of the newer Deere tractors. He thinks they’re getting a little too carried away with things on them anymore. His list of dislikes on the tractor was much bigger than his likes on it.

He thought the planter worked well. But he didn’t like the single wheels as opposed to the dual wheels like the Kinze. He did like the the wheels ran in front of the row units rather than rolling over a few rows if they were behind the units. We both agreed it’d be a pain in the *** to work on when it’d come to taking off gauge wheels and disc openers. He also didn’t like how low it set in field position. There were places the row units would drag trying to go across a few washed ditch spots in the field. He also didn’t care for the marker arms being hooked up to an electrical switch. Same with the swing around for transportation.

So all that plus, not knowing what the actual price tag on even the basic model didn’t get him too excited about actually owning one.

Do you guys plant or drill more beans? Seems a lot of folks are moving away from drills due to accuracy issues.

Sometimes it just kind of depends. There’s been times it’s varied. If it gets later or there isn’t a very wide window to get things done we’ll end up drilling quite a bit. But we’ve been trying to plant more than we drill. We can run a lower population with the drill and still come out with a similar yield.

End of the week wasn’t too busy. Some more rain slowed us down.
IMG_1196.jpg
IMG_1197.jpg
Took care of all the cattle. Spent the rest of my time in the shop.
IMG_1198.jpg
Finished servicing dad’s truck. I didn’t get too particular on it. Just made sure everything was where it was supposed to be.
IMG_1202.jpg
It should be good to go for awhile.

Then I traded trucks with my uncle.
IMG_1201.jpg
His truck was due for an oil change too. Plus it was loosing coolant.
IMG_1203.jpg
Coolant issue ended up being that hose fitting up on top of the engine. I think it’s at least the second time I’ve replaced that. It seems like this thing always has some sort of issue. It’s about ready to be retired.

So I got it out and then it was time to pull the F-250 in.
IMG_1204.jpg
But I didn’t start on it. Just drained the oil. Cleaned up the shop a bit and headed home.

My b-i-l said he might try out the Macnaught BOP pump for ATF.
IMG_1205.jpg
So I got one of those. I also decided to get a rebuild kit to have on hand just in case. Although it all has a two year warranty and should be good for awhile.

I was talking to Macnaught last week. I still send them any pictures of take of using their products. They noticed I used a pump in an open bucket one day with the oil I was reusing for the 4020.
IMG_1206.jpg
So they were nice enough to send me thing little bridge piece. I think it’s something they use for displays at shows or something. But fits perfectly on an open bucket and the pump sits right on top.

Saturday wasn’t very busy either.
IMG_1207.jpg
Saved a turtle that was in the road.
IMG_1208.jpg
Checked the cows and fed the calves.

2da6a8ec7f5e84f06c5d90d7461a3147.jpg
Did a quick service job on the F-250.

IMG_1211.jpg
Gave it a good wash job. Washed around the engine too. There seems to be an oil leak somewhere. But it was hard to tell where it was coming from. Have to run it a little and investigate that a little further.

IMG_1213.jpg
Pulled it back in. Replaced a tail light bulb. Then pretty much called it a day.

We had a few shower yesterday morning. Then a few more after I left the shop. So I just left the truck in the shop.

IMG_1214.jpg
So I should be ready to service the 3020 finally.

IMG_1215.jpg
And get my work space cleaned up.

Showers on and off last night and a few today. I’m not for sure how much we’ve had but I know over an inch the last couple days.

So it sounds like I’ll be in the shop a few days. Decided to pretty much take the day off today too.

Back to work today. Had some sprinkles this morning. Things are definitely wet. Dad checked the cows this morning so I took that time to pick things up in the shop.

Added some 1/4” sockets and spark plug sockets to the truck.

I swapped my electrical stuff out of a DeWalt box to a tool bag. The box can only fit under the drawers in the truck. So it usually gets pushed to the back. Then if I need my multimeter i then I have to empty everything else out first.

The bag fits right in the middle box.

Deere came to work on both the combines. Making all the repairs from their inspections a few weeks ago.

The Pioneer dealer came to pick up the seed corn we weren’t able to plant.

I picked around the shop so I could work and didn’t have stuff sitting around everywhere. Finally got a start on the 3020.
9ace7699f7dbecf348cd24b74d00bf64.jpg
But I had a few issues.
321dc0ac54d56200978e7526550001e6.jpg
I drained the transmission/hydraulic oil, the filter looked pretty dirty, so I decided to check the screen too. But the plug was rounded out. I tried to shape it out. But no luck so far.

Then when I pulled out the engine oil filter I found one of the studs that holds the housing on was loose.
b7ea2b6aa66c09e50eb93d1f67a49020.jpg
But I was able to get it backed out. It wasn’t the right stud anyway.

Not finished but at least I got started today.

We’re going to have a lot of spraying to do soon. So we thought we’d try to get things set up.

Dad bought a few new water tanks to put on the flatbed trailer.

Got some hoses and fittings to get the pump set up to both tanks too.

That was pretty much it for the day. More chance for rain tomorrow. Really good chances again by the weekend. Market hasn’t gone anywhere and the river is supposed to go up above flood stage soon. Things aren’t looking super promising this week. Not sure how things will work out.

Between the River Hills & the River Bottom

Had another tenth of rain Monday evening. So it definitely didn’t dry any Tuesday. Clouds all day.
35ebfb73fae94ce278fec022a5920e23.jpg
So we started getting the spraying trailer together.
bde7766914c9b2534620d28518659ad6.jpg
Got the tanks in place, strapped down, and bolted down some pieces of angle iron around the tank to help keep it from shifting as well. Bolted up some boards on the side we had laying around. Just to help keep boxes and things on the trailer. Put floats in both the tanks. Set all the plumbing from the tanks to the pump. Then all the hoses and everything to the tanks and from the pump.

I also got back to the 3020.
ba7c46004bfe33e0487fc67c117cac08.jpg
I put new oil in, greased everything, started checking some other things over, checked the batteries, topped them off and put them on the charger.
0d7e8e4bccf7f60d53bdacaeac9b98a8.jpg
I’d noticed it was definitely low in coolant. I hooked up the pressure tester and let it set. Sure enough it slowly lost pressure. I started to investigate and found the water pump was leaking. So I took the shields and the hood off to prep things to take the pump off.
abc6e9ebcbdccd636209704c26bc8150.jpg
That was highlights of the day.

Checked on all the cattle today. Had another tenth of rain overnight.
75cf673e7542d39be184a789d075ac43.jpg
We had another new arrival yesterday.
96c1d29273f087cd194767401f9f736e.jpg

Deere came to finish up on the combines.
6b674b7e95cfbc78cecd3a91abef0583.jpg
The 9500 needed this piece replaced.
d441e1df3b463a26af8d9679e2dd593d.jpg
Where the grain enters the grain tank, which is also the point where the augers only the grain tank are. It was starting to crack. So they had to dismantle a lot of stuff to replace it. It took them majority of the day to do that job. It required taking off the whole unloading auger as well.

I left to pick up the parts for the 3020. I also had to run in town for some things for my house.

Got back and helped dad set some more stuff up on the spraying trailer. He picked up a couple shuttles with chemicals, for when things finally dry off.
5f907fa8a36df47103c6d1cb408c2165.jpg
It should be ready to roll. Tanks are set and filled, all the hoses and fittings have been checked for leaks, new pump motor is running perfect, shuttles and set and strapped. The pumps and flow meters are set for them. We set on several jugs of other chemicals, gas for the pump motor, and box with a few tools, hose clamps, hose washers, and a few fittings. Tires were checked, hubs topped off with oil, brakes checked. Everything should be good to go.

We showed the rounded up screen/drain plug on the 3020 who was boss.
76a71f45abfe83b3d48a2521cac52cde.jpg
Welded a nut on it. Now that stupid square shouldn’t be a problem anymore. With that in I pumped it full of new hydraulic oil.
146074affc6c590900d3ef692fd1c986.jpg

Then I got started taking things apart for the water pump.
5b6057a74b3cd38d0e43aca63cf69a8e.jpg
f7f4c0d8c64798604b68bda38d148e88.jpg
In take out of the way, radiator and shroud out of the way, hoses and fittings all undone and pump off.

I got a new A&I pump to put on. Half the price of a Deere pump and the dealer only had the A&I one in stock. Just thought I’d stick a new one on. A&I doesn’t have any core charge for them. So I’ll probably keep the old one and get a rebuild kit for it this winter. When I get a chance I’ll rebuild it. Then I’ll have a spare on hand for the 3020 and 4020.
8f4d9ddd10a9aa1cd8c088ac75a5d1df.jpg
I didn’t get it back on yet. I started trying to flush the system real good. I’m also making new hoses to and from the oil cooler, and to and from the block heater. They’re a lot easier to change now then with the pump and radiator on. So those will be added. New thermostat and gasket, and new o-rings in the lines to and from the thermostat. So after a good cleaning it should be in good shape to refill with some fresh coolant.

That was about it for the day. I had to do a plumbing job at home this evening. Second evening in a row.
8d83fb3f5e74b8d0b32f35fb68db7888.jpg
The seal on the sink and one of the p trap fittings in one of the bathrooms started leaking Monday night. I shut the water off at the sink so my girlfriend wouldn’t use it. Got new fittings and seals. Thought it was good to go. But the shut off valve on the hot water leaked the day as it was shut off. Then after I turned it on it still leaked. Not a constant drip. But enough to make a spot the size of a quarter in about 20 minutes. So this evening I put in a new valve.

Me being me I also picked up another p trap and a few shut off valves to have on hand at the house just in case. I’m about a whole 3 minutes from the nearest hardware store. But what the hell? I’m paranoid about having things on hand. It’s kind of my job.

It didn’t rain at the shop today. But we did have rain other places. It was pretty much cloudy all day. Cooler than usual for May yet as well. But we’re supposed to be real warm by the weekend. But with the heat and humidity comes lots of chances for rain. As of this morning there’s a good chances of rain starting Saturday and 10+ days following it. Not looking good.

If we get much more rain we’ll be super busy. We’ll have to be spraying, planting beans, making hay, getting things ready for wheat, it’s going to get hectic before too long.

Make sure you have all the beans you need. Nephew in Central Illinois had a conversation with seed dealer looking for extra seed. Dealer was saying about 35% of the beans in Northern Illinois got froze out and need replanting. Dealer was scrambling to find seed for his customers.

That'll happen when you plant in mid April.

that drain is an S trap. the right way is to put an extension on the sink drain itself to drop the trap down below the level of the horizontal exit piece.

Pastures have been looking good. They’ve all been getting fed pretty well. Flies are really starting to set in though.

Hauled some corn off for a few days.

Spread some more fertilizer at a farm.
IMG_1378.jpg
Planted the last of the hill beans. Then had a big pour down on them. They’re coming up but it’s been tough on them.

Between the rains and the river level getting anything in the bottom has been on hold still. Not looking good again.

Finally got work done on the 3020. New water pump, thermostat, hoses, fixed a crack in the radiator.
IMG_1351.jpg
Also started on the 4010.
IMG_1414.jpg
Started the brake valve job.
IMG_1410.jpg
I was hoping I could interchange some parts from the other one. But that didn’t really work.
IMG_1416.jpg
I at least got the other one together and ready to go. But the lines for the old one are different sizes and have different size fittings than the newer one has.

That issue has to be addressed yet.
