I’ll briefly touch on my metal detecting. Haven’t had many chance to go but I’ve done a little since winter. Here’s some of my funds.

I know there’s plenty more that I did and went on. But it’s been hard to get caught up on it all. I can’t remember all of it. It seems like it’s go, go, go all the time. Not much time for a break. Plus, I feel like if I’ve got time to sit I could be doing something.

I’ve got tools to inventory that I’m selling. I’d like to get an inventory of all my shop tools and tools in the service truck, mainly for insurance purposes.

I need to make up inspection checklist for the new planter and fertilizer spreader, as well as update and makeup some new inspection list for pieces of equipment of which of checklist are full. (Most the sheets have room for about 8-10 inspections)

I need to get all my latest records on the cattle wrote down, field records updated, bills paid, plenty of things to do.

I’ve almost completed, to an extent, my parts inventory app info.

This app has been awesome so far. It makes it so easy to know what I have and where I have it. I still need to add more to it. But it’s already served it’s purpose and it’s more than worth the $8.99 one time purchase.

There also a similar app from the same maker I’m not using to keep repair and maintenance notes and reminders. If I spot something that needs to be addressed I can easy enter any info for the job. I also have a list of parts to order as well, things to get now as well as things to restock on later in the year.

Both apps make it so much easier to stay organized. Plus, it helps avoid entering that info in the other to-do lists on my phone and getting mixed with everything else. They’re both linked to my iPad and update instantly and you don’t have to have good internet service to launch them or update things in them. They’re the ideal thing I spend about 2-3 years searching for. Yet another GJ suggestion.

I use a lot of pen and paper, which I like. I hate to be so dependent on my phone, but it makes things a lot smoother sometimes.

Got a few new SK items, via the SK Club. Wanted a 6 point 24mm socket for the truck, got another 24mm to replace my Craftman 12 point in the shop box, got the 13mm ratchet wrench to try it out against the Wera ratchet wrench. Center punch was cheap and easy to pick up for the truck as well.

Picked up some of these Yelloc plugs online. I’ve seen them a few places before online, they’re definitely not cheap. I’m hoping they hold up well. I’m not sure they’d be ideal for every situation. But I feel like they could be handy for some things, like hose removal, things like that. Just to help things clean, avoid getting oil everywhere. Especially for some of those situations that I don’t have an actual threaded cap or plug for.

Also, found these silicone plugs on Amazon, supposed to hold up well to heat, naturally not made for pressurized situations, but could be handy as well plugging things being worked on, they we’re definitely cheaper than the Yelloc plugs, we’ll see how they do.

Forgot to mention, I helped dad get moved around to get all the spraying done on the wheat Saturday. I reloaded the truck with water, helped him get moved from place to place. We’re doing some custom spraying again. Sprayed over 400 acres of wheat Saturday, plus a little bit of bean ground in the morning before that.

Is that a 4630 or a 4023? We had a 4630 at work for a little bit. Nice sprayer but I had to be a contortionist to get into the cab lol.

It’s a 4630. We bought it new. I think it’s 11 years old now. Which of corse by standards of these new Deere sprayers is pretty much an outdated antique anymore.

It still has less than 2,000 hours though. Really no major issues. Had to replace the main pump a few years ago. Had a few deals go out. I’m not crazy about the brakes on the front axle. But it does it’s job and does it’s job well.

How's the new planter handling?

Well we’ve only been able to use it on bottom ground so far. Weather has been keeping us from getting anymore planted.

But it handled good on the flat ground. But this thing is heavy. I’ve never complained about structural integrity before. But this thing is too heavy. Hit a few low spots in the bottom fields and that thing will sink.

We added some weight to the front of the 4440. But I think it’s still going to be a heavy load for it once we get started on some larger hills. Plus, we aren’t even running it with any liquid fertilizer yet. The tanks hold 600 gallon. But I think even if we only go with 300 gallon it’s going to be a big load.

They advertised it as being a planter for a 4440. But they must’ve planned on a 4440 only pulling it in the flat lands of some place like Nebraska. Not these hills.

I think I would’ve preferred trying vacuum meters over finger pick-up. But I didn’t get to make that call.

I think once we use it for beans it will be nice filling all the boxes on the back instead of going back and forth from the front to the back like on the Kinze. But it’s kind of a pain in the *** to fill the smaller corn boxes with the other beans boxes still on the planter.

I’m going to really hate having to work on it down the road as well since all the rows are so close together. It was tight just taking the no-till coulters on and off.

Theres a lot going on there in a small package. The downsides to that are exactly what you described: weight and maintenance being rough. Hopefully its built heavy enough to last a long time and won't need too much maintenance. Thats the gamble I guess.

Whats your next step up from the 4440? 7510?

Yeah weight can be a big factor. Maintenance as far as frame and what not should be good I think. I don’t think we’ll have to worry about the markers arms wearing like they did on the Kinze either. My main thing is the disk opener bearings. It seems like they’re all made the same anymore and they’ll go out. Sooner or later. I’m not looking forward to messing with those on this planter.

7510 would likely be the next step up from the 4440. Unless we’d find something else. But I feel the 7510 would almost then need a set of duals to carry a little better. We’d have to put weight on the front of it too. Front rack doesn’t have any weight on it. I think the MFWD would definitely help it.

I got that Wilde prybar holder from Epstein's too. Very impressed. I have probably 8 bars in it, room for 4 more IIRC.

That planter is huge compared to the 4440 lol. It's kinda sad that they're pushing away older 2WDs as planter tractors, but I suppose they need the weight for no till planters?

Greetings!
I hope you have time for a metal detecting question.
I'm trying to map out my drains around the shop since I'm getting ready to expand my shop.
Most of the current drains are clay tile or PVC, could a metal detector help trace the drain if I inserted a large wire down the drain? I know they make devices for tracing but I cant find one to rent around here.
I have no idea how deep they are.
As always, thank you for sharing!

They seem pretty nice. I sold a full set to a guy who farms and does mechanic work too and he’s been really happy with them so far.

I agree. I think we’re going to have to look for something different for the planter. We added weights to the front and we’re going to have fluid put in the rear tires to add weight. We’ll see how that does. I think this is another case of engineers thinking everything that’s farmed is flat level ground. With some of the places we go it’s the exact opposite.

Well a lot of that would depend on how deep the drains are. A lot of detectors, especially cheaper ones typically won’t go deeper than maybe 10”. I’m not sure how the clay or pvc would effect a detectors ability to pick up on the wire.

There are a lot of variables that can determine a detectors ability to locate things. Ground conditions and soil types can actually play a big factor. So can interference from other frequencies. If I use mine at the farm I have a fairly common issue with the detector picking up frequency from the electric fence.

If I had to guess I’d say it likely wouldn’t work. Unless you had a really expensive fancy one that could detect to 18”+. But even then I’m not sure.

Boring: You need a drain camera with a sonde....way faster and will give you depth readings too. Spend the $ and have a plumber with a camera and locator run it for you. Maybe an hour total to do it and mark the path. Some of the big rental yards have the equipment, but calling the plumber is going to be quicker and less expensive in the long run.

This might solve your problem pulling stuff:
[Case 150]
Having seen that monster in person, I can tell you its an amazing machine. The story behind the build is astounding by itself, but then take a look at the family and team that pulled it off and what the machine can do and you will lose yourself down a rabbit hole of steam history. Fun fact: their local JohnDeere dealer hauls it to shows for them. CNH wants nothing to do with it apparently. Someone in their marketing team should probably be fired lol.

I watched the video about building it. Apparently, Case gave them free reign in the archives and let them copy anything they needed to do the build. Some of the marketing people and management are poorly informed....Look at what UP spends in their steam shop and how much they get in return for it.

The app I’ve been using for inventory purposes is called MyStuff2 Pro. Really helpful. If you can’t find it I’ll post a link to the website later.

Thanks, I was able to find it and will try it out. I have other apps for movies & games which it looks like this can do as well.

Which app do you use to track oil changes and other maintenance? (iLogger ?)

Thanks for the replies.

I’ve been using iLogger for repairs, if I repair something in the field, that way I can write it down later, but I need to use it for oil changes. I haven’t been using it for that.

Don’t worry. Everything is good. I’ve just been busy.

I’ve been having trouble with the old GJ app to work, along with the Tapatalk app to use GJ. Has something changed? That’s part of the reason for my delay on update.

Taps for Tapatalk.....Ryan killed it due to some significant changes they wanted. All about user data access. Ryan says no data sharing, so Tapatalk had to be killed off.:)

Well let’s try to catch up. I’ll try to remember where I left off without forgetting to many details.

Let’s start with planting. We finished up with corn right there about the middle of May. Still had quite a few cool days for May, so the corn wasn’t taking off very fast.

It was time to start on beans. Dad just went ahead and starting drilling some beans as I’d helped my uncle finished up with corn. But before dad could drill I had to quickly look over the drill to make sure things were good to go. Greased it up. But there were three hydraulic hoses and that I didn’t like the looks of. I took them off to have new ones made.
43BA0A13-4E5B-4862-980E-86A573A8771F.jpeg94A7BB1A-1F21-47FB-99EA-F29202F5FDA9.jpeg
So got the new hoses on. Fired it up and ran things about to make sure the fan on the drill was running properly, make sure all the air was out of the hydraulic system and to make sure that the monitor for the drill was working properly. Then BAM! a hydraulic hose blows! Luckily, not on of the new ones. But a different one, on for the fan, which means it runs from the tractor, all the way down the tongue, all across the drill, under the seed tank and back to the fan, at the very back.
EC4D5EB3-ACCC-49DB-9ADD-29EE286E2816.jpeg
So I took that hose off, drove 20 miles to the guy that makes our hoses. Got the hose, jumped in my truck, and right then and there the starter goes out. I was stuck. The guy that makes the hoses for us farms as well. They were having baler issues, planter issues, working on someone else’s tractor. So I called dad to come pick me up. While I waited on him I took the starter out.

We went back down the road, got the hose on the drill, loaded it up and got dad going. Luckily, our buddy Noah was around that day after school so him and I made a trip to get a new starter, went back out to the hose guy’s place and put the new starter in. What a day!

That weekend we had finished with corn so that Sunday I decided to switch the planter over to get it ready to plant beans.
D21E1946-A3DC-40EB-B8EA-7173A7C5BE34.jpeg
It’s nice to not have to swap meters on all the boxes. But these larger bean boxes are awkward to put on and remove, especially, with them all close together. It makes it easy to fill the boxes with them all in back, but with things being so cramped together compared to that Kinze I’m going to absolutely hate working on this thing in a few years. But I got everything set for beans, checked things over, lubed the chains, greased everything, got the monitor set for beans, it was ready.

We had a few days of rain on and off. But nothing major. Every time they’d call for 2 inches or so we’d end up with maybe a half inch, which wasn’t a bad thing. After 556 acres of corn planted, there were just a few minor issues with the planter, mainly all due to factory issues. Hydraulic lines weren’t tightened. The stop for the “fold” switch/sensor wasn’t set properly, so the monitor didn’t think it was folded to plant, therefor wouldn’t fold out the marker arms (did I mention that?). Nothing bad, just annoying.

About 30 acres in on planting beans and we had an issue. Two rows weren’t planting way off on population. They started way low then eventually went way too high. It looked like something wasn’t correct in the meter, they warrantied the parts for us. Then it happened again. Now, this time I wasn’t able to be there to inspect it, which I wasn’t the first time actually either. But I assumed dad had it under control. Warrantied the parts, then it happened again, almost immediately. Same two meters each time. At this time I knew something had to be wrong that dad was missing.

Luckily, I’d purchased a parts catalog for the planter (you’d think they’d give you one when you buy it new, but no, they never do). I had a theory that maybe something was missing. I took off the two problem meters and then took off one meter that wasn’t causing an issue (why dad had never done this I’m not sure). Sure enough those two meters were missing 3 parts and a little screw.
721FCCF7-0F05-4FDA-BB0D-CD153A285F60.jpeg
If you noticed, circled in red, are the parts that should be in the meter on the left. A brush, a little rubber piece, a small plastic piece that holds down the other two pieces and a screw that holds all those piece in place. Those pieces were missing from the factory in two of the meters.

The problem here is that those pieces help control how much seed is going through the meter. Without those a bunch of seed would go at once, therefore the brush on the round black piece that is there would come off rather quickly, as it’s just glued in place. The brush would come off and then it really had nothing to slow the seed down. Each one of those black pieces with the brush is over $80 a piece, which luckily was covered by warranty. But, I had to go through all of this with the service manager at the dealership, I gave him the part numbers of everything I need to make things smoother. But then he forgot about it. Also, the part numbers for a few of the missing parts do not have a good part number anymore and they can’t even find those parts. So, we still don’t have the replacement parts. Not sure when we’ll get them.

So we had maybe 100 acres of beans planted with this brand new planter. Everything else we drilled. I fault for not taking more pictures but we actually finished with all the beans at the end of May, even the beans outside of the levee. Knock on wood, the river hasn’t been crazy this spring, which is surprising from what we’re used to. All I know is I don’t ever remember having all the corn and all the full season beans in the ground and coming up before the first of June, at least not in the last 12-15 years. So that’s a good feeling.

Taps for Tapatalk.....Ryan killed it due to some significant changes they wanted. All about user data access. Ryan says no data sharing, so Tapatalk had to be killed off.:)
Got it! I’m ok with that. I liked the ease of Tapatalk, but I don’t know why these places have to get carried away with things. Especially, when they want to start doing things like that and adding subscriptions and ads and all that other ****.

I think this was a much needed upgrade to GJ. The search functions alone are worth it for the normal guy.

Bummer spending that much $$$$$$ on a new planter and then have parts missing.
How did you get through corn without having problems?
And seriously, then you have to buy a parts catalog :(

It between keeping the planter (somewhat) going, the drill going, making sure we had our bean seed, and keeping water to dad for the sprayer, I also had to get the hay equipment ready. I don’t recall if I posted that. But had a few things to replace on the baler. Looked things over good on the mower condition and flipped the knives over to a fresh side. Then before getting started on beans I cut and baked the forage wheat for hay.

30 acres made 192 bales, so it made pretty good. Some of it got a little dryer than I’d wanted. But it ended up being sunnier than the meteorologist led me to believe.

My uncle, that lives beside dad, retired at the end of January from construction/selling building. He didn’t have anything going on so I talked him into gathering up the bales while I baled them. That definitely saved me some time. Baled them Friday, got them wrapped Saturday.

Then amongst everything else a week or so later I cut some of the fescue for hay. The side of the levee, neighbors fescue patches, horse pasture, and some of our pasture.

But I was able to get a hose made and back on the evening yet. So I was able to get back to it. The next day I finished cutting, got started tedding. I did the raking as well.

I also got this tool for helping replace broken teeth on the rake. Not much for what it cost. But I have to say it does actually make the job easier if you use it right.

Dad ran the baler and we got all of those baled up. So it was time to haul them all to the barn. Which started out using the 7230 and the gooseneck. But on the first load right when I got to the hay shed (good thing it was there and not some place else) one of the three point arms broke in two.
B0E6BB88-A6B4-467E-9BD3-A2A84E08B0A4.jpeg
So we had to go get the 4020 and unload the trailer before we could even get it unhooked so that took extra time. Not to mention screw the whole plan up for the day. Then one of the bale spears on the 4020 broke while Noah was using it. It was not a fun day.
D83AA220-7819-4ED3-9528-89503F2BFFD1.jpeg
So I had to use the truck. Took the entire day but we got all the bales out away.
FB4E7592-04FB-4647-96B1-C22C8EE52484.jpeg
Took a little over a week to get a new arm. I couldn’t find one used anywhere. I searched the internet for half a day. It makes it worse that there are about 3 options for 3 point arms on the 7230, two of which have substituted part numbers. So for just the one arm is was right at $700.

sorry some of my pictures are going sideways. I’m going to have to figure out the new site.

Well we had a few issues while planting corn. We had 4 hydraulic fittings work themselves loose and sprayed oil everywhere, more than once, because they weren’t properly secured from the factory.

I also mentioned that the stop bolt when the planter swings around to plant wasn’t set right from the factory. Since it wasn’t set in the correct spot the plant knocked the “swing switch” over too far. That made the monitor think that the planter wasn’t I plant position and therefore wouldn’t allow the marker arms to be used.

As far as the meters go though they’re completely different from the soybean meters. But the soybean meter issue was yet another factor problem. I’ve heard several issues from the factory with these new planters just from the dealer that we bought ours from. I can only imagine what other problems people are having with them.

They never give away anything with a new piece of equipment besides the operator’s manual. I’m lucky I talked the salesman into giving us a tub of seed talc to use with the seed for the planter. That was $45 and that’s all we got. No hats or nothing. There’s no way they’re going to throw in a part catalog. That thing was well over $100.

So I had worked on all the hay equipment, brush hog, drill, planter. The shop was actually empty for a little over a week for once. Almost 2 weeks I think actually. It was weird.

But we had a bit of rain and the sprayer was only about 8 hours shy of needing an oil change. So I looked it over.

Serviced the F-550 this week too.

A few weekends ago the starter went out on my lawn mower. Had to wait a week for once of those to show up.

My dad and uncle were supposed to go to a tractor pull in Ohio over the weekend. But they got 100 out of town and had noticed brake issues on the semi-trailer. They also had a tire blow out and naturally only had one spare. With brake issues and a spare gone and having almost another 400 miles to go til they got there they decided to just head back home.
00D5B469-8A18-46F9-B947-5FA75CE15A23.jpeg
The trailer hasn’t been moved since it went in for a federal inspection in November. Right away I found the right blinker light was out, I let it slide. But we found the brake issue was that the brakes just needed to be adjusted, which should’ve been addressed at inspection as well as the light.

We recently had the IH 9400 truck worked over as well. I didn’t do it. Trucks are be no means my area of knowledge and I didn’t have the time for it.

Dad’s pulling A is currently in the shop.
6D6B5251-249D-4AA0-B5A9-1CB6FEC1E28F.jpeg
Had a valve majorly stuck. It bent a push rod and the cam. Needless to say it doesn’t sound too good right now.

since the shop had been empty I decided to put the feed grinder in there.
E51FB04F-82E5-41D9-961B-B668608DACE7.jpeg
I cleaned it up for once pretty good before I pulled it in. I think this is only about the second time that’s happened. I thought I’d finally try to replace the worn out bearings on the hammermill before they decide to blow apart. Besides I’ve had them for over a year now.

A tray full of nuts and bolts later and I got it out. But I ran into a problem.
046B4C7C-CB5C-41EC-9050-D869B4A8D7BE.jpeg
Noticed the long heavy pulley on it? It’s held in place with a tapered square key. That thing won’t budge. At all. Tried to hammer on it. Tried to heat it. Tried and bent a puller on it. Stuck it in the press. Won’t move a bit. Now you might say, “why don’t you just cut it off of there and replace it?”. Well the only place I can find that pulley it’s directly from ArtsWay. When it called them they said the earliest that may have one of those pulleys in stock would be minimum two weeks, there likely at least another week for it to show up to me. Oh, and it’s also $788, that doesn’t count shipping. I also have no clue where and if I’d be able to find a used one. I feel like that highly unlikely. So it’s still sitting and the calves are going to be needing a batch of feed soon.

Oh. Another thing. Dad just couldn’t resist. I didn’t approve of this purchase. But dad finally completed his JD 20 series two cylinder collection.
F70BD8E3-76D4-47D8-AD6F-95F69616E002.jpeg
He bought a 320 from an online auction. A guy decided to sell his whole collection. It came from Wisconsin. It had to be picked up the following day and was going to be outrageous to ship. He was lucky it had rained that day. So we drove 8 hours up to Wisconsin, loaded the tractor, met the guy who owned it, and out on the road again. We left my house that morning at 4 and got back to my house that night at about 10:30.

EC1A353E-FB6A-4ACC-8DA0-31982AEE7F89.jpeg
By no means do we need another tractor to just sit around. I will say that it is in pretty good shape. It probably runs better than any of our two cylinders do too. It fires right up and runs smooth as can be. Plus, put it in 4th gear and open it up it’ll even spin the tires in the gravel. It’s got some pep to it for as small as it is.

But now we have the 320 with weights, wide 420 (that needs work), wide 520 that is an older restoration that dad bought awhile back, it runs ok. There the 620 that actually belonged to me great uncle years go that dad had someone paint up several years ago now. It’s in decent shape. A 720 that my dad and uncle bought from up in the middle of a big city, I don’t remember where. But it runs like ****. It needs a ton of work. Then there’s the 820, industrial, even though there technically wasn’t supposed to be any 820 industrials. It’s all original, was one owner, came from South Dakota. It’s nice but needs some work, engine work for sure.

Well that’s some of it for you anyway. I know there’s a lot more. Because there hasn’t been much down time the last several months. This weekend was busy too.

Cut more hay Friday. Tedded and raked and baled some Saturday. Dad did some spraying Saturday too.
C1FDC44F-E91F-45CC-A9E6-6C962ABCE7AC.jpegBut he called me that morning that he had a problem.

I’m not sure what exactly happened but he demolished one of the tires on the water tank trailer.
41D2E2FF-E22B-49FD-981A-CA5B56328D83.jpeg
We didn’t have a spare that size. But looks like I’ll be finding one. There’s really only two tire shops in town. On Saturday they’re only open til noon. But neither one had that particular size in stock. So we can’t get one til Monday.

Today dad cut some more hay. We’re doing some custom hay making for someone this week. But today I finished some of our own.
56AB3542-2692-4E73-A91B-0443B7718742.jpeg
I raked it all early afternoon. Started baling it this evening.
FA57787F-E61A-4369-9B7E-78DAA6C8ED84.jpeg
I was able to get some of them in the hay shed at the retirement farm. But the rest is going to have to go down the road to the hay shed at our place. 76 bales today and 30 bales yesterday.
CA5357AE-5EAA-49D5-8B55-CF2B6DB5793B.jpeg
The ones that didn’t fit in the hay shed at the retirement farm I grouped up this evening to make it a little faster to load them on the trailer when we get to that.

Thanks for the update! I like seeing what you guys are up to on the farm.

Has this been an abnormally high amount of repairs for you guys? Seems like a lot looking at it from the outside.

And wow, I've never seen a 3 point hitch arm snap in half. Those things have a pretty high load rating. I take it you couldn't weld it back together?
