One annoying job we had to do late this summer was for a neighbor/land lord. We farm his ground but he still has maybe around 20 or so cattle that he pastures and raises calves off of. Fences are never kept up, pastures look terrible, cattle aren’t cared for as often as they should be. His equipment is ignored most of all. He makes hay for the cattle but never has enough for winter. He’ll usually bring over no less than 3 things to the shop each year to have something welded. His hay equipment is worn out and he won’t fix things. So he patches it and hopes it at least makes it through the day.
He has a few older JD two cylinders that were his dads. None of them run, haven’t in years. He has an old red belly Ford that quit on him this summer. He let it sit where it died for months. There’s a 4030 with a loader that quit on him last year. He’s got a 4430 that still runs but needs some major work. Since nothing else was running he had to take the duals off the 4430 and cut, rake and bale the hay with it. Also had to mow his pastures with it. I think he used a bale carrier on the back to feed hay last winter. I don’t mean to sound bad, but they guy just doesn’t take care of his stuff. He works an office job up in the city and just doesn’t take care of the stuff.
Anyway, he was going to have someone work on his 4030, the transmission was screwed up. But he had to take the loader off of it before he could take it to the guy.

He couldn’t get the pins out to take the loader off so he called us. Luckily, he was at work so he wasn’t in the way.
The annoying thing about this was he called about 3 times to have us haul this tractor, all times of which we took the time and do things to make it happen then last minute he backed out.
This 4030 would only go in reverse. It would run but all round sounded terrible. He weren’t even going to try and mess with it at his place to we just towed it with a chain and the 4020 to the shop.

We tried everything we had put the torch and could absolutely not get the pins out to dismount the loader. So that meant attempting to remove the loader and mounting brackets all at once. I don’t have any pictures of that unfortunately, cuz it was a job. It took some time as well.

It’s impossible to just lift the loader brackets up. So we had to old the loader up with the 4020 loader and slowly reverse the 4030 out from its loader. But that wasn’t easy either. We had several pry bars, and 2x4’s shoved in places to bring the mounting brackets out from parts of the frame to avoid catching the sheet metal, the frame, fuel lines and more.

But we got the oily mess off of there.

He shouldn’t have to worry about rust because everything was coated in oil and doesn’t fuel. Literally just about the whole tractor. There was no way in hell I was taking that to someone to have it worked on without being washed. Taking the loader off was enough off a mess let alone splitting that thing. There was just a steady stream of diesel leaking from the filter prime pump. Oil dripping from everywhere. The radiator was absolutely full of dirt and oil, looked like it hadn’t been cleaned out in years, not just a few either. From the time we hooked to it with the chain to pull it to the time we got it loaded on the trailer it was 4 and a half hours we had in this tractor that 1. Isn’t even out and 2. we weren’t even working on.

I pushed it on the trailer with the 4020.

Dad hauled it off to have it worked on. Then we found out it’s been almost impossible to find the parts they need for it. The transmission was junk. The guy had to split it to tear it apart and couldn’t find several of the gears and other parts to rebuild it. It was Aug. 23 when we did all this. I know it isn’t back together yet. I’m not sure if they’ve found all the parts yet or not.
If anything it’s a good lesson for everyone to be a reminder to take care of your stuff! Instead of just adding a bucket of oil to it every time you use it you should actually address the issues and regularly maintain and inspect things. Otherwise it’s all just a big waste of time and money.
Yes, the whole thing did slightly aggravate me.
