I have a 7lb sledge with an 18" handle, can use it two handed or choke up on it some one handed, also have a 4lb with a 14" handle for tighter spaces.

I like a heavy head, but a short handle. I don't do enough hammering to have learned real control. While I use others, my favorite "big" hammer is an Estwing like this:

I did build a brass hammer as a school project during the "Machining" class at the trade school I went to. I'll have to grab a photo.

Usually a 3 lb. hammer, anything bigger than that requires a 8 lb. sledge . Like dad always said don,t force it use a bigger hammer!

I have several, the wilton bash 4 pounder is a beast, haven't fallen in love with it yet, still like my wood handle Vaughan cross pien. Picked up a hf stubby handle a couple years ago and it has held up great, picked one up for at home and the head is loose after a couple uses.

I have a 4lb mini sledge, us made without manufacturer name from hje and a buddy blaster at work...at home couple 2.5 lbs drilling hammers and another 3-4 lb sledge. If I really need more than that 4 pounder can put down it either needs a torch or a press.... YMMV tho

All though I got plenty of bigger ones I'd say my 3lb single jack gets the most use.

x2 on the Estwing drilling hammer.

Otherwise, a 2lb ball peen suits me fine.

4lb drilling hammer is my most used of any hammers I have. So I dont consider that one a BFH. Also have 10lb brass sledge 10&12lb sledges and a 20lb wilton bash sledge that all get used regularly. Would like to grab a 10+ lb deadblow and some lead/babbit hammers as well. All of those except the drilling hammer I cut the handles to significant shorter length. Dont really use the larger ball peen hammers dont care for them. I only use ball peens for smaller precision work.

My go to hammers are a 3lb orange HF deadblow, 2lb drilling with cast steel handle, and 4lb engineer's with hickory handle. Also have a 12lb sledge for when I really want to beat the holy hell out of something.

My big hammer is a 10 or 12 lb sledge head on a fiberglass handle. I'm not sure a 4lb drillers hammer counts as a big hammer, maybe an average hammer.

One of my prize possessions is a large copper hammer I inherited from my Dad (by "inherited" I mean found laying under a bunch of other **** outside his garage after he died).

It's at least four pounds -- never thought to weigh it. It's crude, beat all to hell, and has an ancient but solid and hellishly strong hickory handle.

It's incredibly handy and effective. When you really need to give something a nice solid thwack without damaging it, copper is the way to go. Great for seating bearing races, bashing things with threads (axles, studs, etc.), and general non marring mayhem.

My bigger hammer I have is one of the blue all metal estwing 3lb drilling hammers. I don't know what it is but I'm not a big fan of it. I'm thinking of putting it in the car trunk tool bag and getting a 4lb drilling hammer with a normal wood or fiberglass handle. Other than that my go to normal hammer is a snap on 16oz db ball peen

An old Bell System 3# drilling hammer, several wooden mallets, and a selection of different sizes of Garland and Chicago split head mallets with different tips, leather, plastic, lead, etc.

Love mine of these... such great hammers and seem very accurate considering I usually am pretty inaccurate with hammers.

I also like my 12lb deadblow hammer.

I use my 32oz Snappy ball peen pretty often since I find a smaller hammer that's easier to control makes for a more powerful swing I also have a 4 pound drilling hammer that does a great job. Obviously, if I need tons of force I'll drag out the 8 pound sledge, but for working on cars and trucks I've only needed it like two or three times.
