Bicycle Storage help!

Hi All,

Any photos or good ideas on how to keep the bikes from keeping the garage looking cluttered? I've got about 6 of them and three need to be low for easy access by kids / wife.

Now that I think about it, i need to deal with skateboards and scooters too. sheesh

I'm thinking about a regular bike rack but if anyone has a good idea - could you let me know?

We use these alot, they are easy to let up and down and hold alot of bikes. Of course you will need to have the ceiling height to make it work. Extreme;y easy to install also.

If you google Wally Liftmate you will find the perfect solution for your bikes. It has a hydraulic arm to raise the bike up and out of the way. If you use 3 of these you can get 3 of you bikes off the floor and very easily accessible. Get a case or 2 of storewall and 3 bike racks that will mount on it. The 3 lower bike racks can be placed directly underneath the upper bike. I don't know how to upload a picute of the Wally Liftmate. Once you see the picture you should have a clearer picture of how it works. I'l second the second storage space - but with a plastic storage shed. I bought one when I built my shop to keep the bikes, lawn equipment, etc. A 6x8 or 8x8 sets you back about $700.00 (CDN) - it's the best decision I could have made!

I don't have a photo but I'll try to decsribe this. It's brilliant. My brother in law came up with it.

Drill and put a fairly stout eye hook in a bottom corner of your garage door. Run a cable straight up to the corner of the ceiling and through a pulley. Now go along the ceiling parallel to and following along the garage door track back to the end of it. Through another pulley and terminate the cable with a eye. Push the button to raise the garage door and the cable end comes down to you (it'll be kinked up and unloaded so pull it to you with a bit of twine).

Make a little cradle or yoke to slip over the top tube of the bike. Attach the cable end to it. Push the button, bike goes up. Now, he has high garage ceilings (split level house) and the bike is over a storage area so it's high enough and out of the way enough to be not a head-clunking hazard. Your mileage may vary.

Couple things. I don't remember how he keeps the bike from spinning around as it goes up, maybe a string on the wheel, then tie it off to the adjacent wall. The other thing, so the bike isn't riding up and down every time you open the door, unhook the cable from the door and hook it to a stationary hook on the trim beside the door.

Anyway, cool idea.

I just use a couple plain U-hooks that stick out from the wall that have some rubber tube on them to protect the bike frame. One down low for my wife's bike, and one up high for mine. Just got a tricycle for the wee one so I don't know where I'll put that yet

Hard to see in this old photo, but the "single hook on the wall" works quite well. Stagger the bikes handle bars up / down to pack them in closer.

I mounted it fairly high on the wall so that I can get put the grill under it during the winter but still reach the bikes when we use them. Having my wife be able to get bikes down wasn't a concern because I always end up doing it.

I just use the plastic covered J hooks from Home Depot. Screw them into a ceiling joist and then hang the rear tire from the hook. I have 5 bikes all lined up about a foot or so from the wall. Keeps them off the floor and easy to get too. I have tall ceilings and its not problem in getting the bikes up. No pics I am out of town for the next little bit.

Here are plans for a PVC bike rack. I made the four bicycle model and it works AWESOME in the back of my full size chevy. Also works great on the garage floor. don't paint it if you don't want to look at paint chips.
