I have a few sets of metric wrenches up to 19-22mm but have nothing above other than crowsfeet which are not ideal sometimes.

Looking for recommendations on a set that starts somewhere around 19-22mm and goes up to ? idk maybe 32-40mm?

Thanks

My thoughts: Big wrenches = big money so unless you foresee a need for every size in between I'd opt for buying only what's needed for the task at hand. I'm not sure that an expansion set as you describe is even offered by anyone and if so is the price any different than buying separates.

Great point, I wonder what some of the common sizes are for automotive work? Seems I run into 23mm a bit.

you might want to take a look at Tekton's "outlet" pages - they have closeout prices on some "blem" stuff that look fairly reasonable.

the largest metric wrench I have is a 24 x 26 DOE, but I don't believe I've ever used it.

Depends on what you service.

If you have to ask you don't need them.
I guess that depends what you call "need" in the past I would just use a adjustable or a crowsfeet to get the job done since I didn't have any wrench bigger than 22mm. I can't recall what sizes they were now...

My metric wrench’s go up to 32mm, they get used quite often. Viscous fans are often 36mm. I came across 34mm on an inner tie rod last week.

I just looked up my set, it has 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 30 and 32Mm. Not all of those get used, don’t think the 20, 26 or 28 have left the roll.

Tekton does offer some large wrench sets.

25mm to 32mm

33mm to 41mm

42mm to 50mm

I would be curious as to what you are working on too. I'm not a mechanic, just work on my own stuff, but the biggest tools I remember using are axle nut sockets up to about 32mm.
Mostly needing the bigger stuff for steering and suspension on my 1 ton truck and some industrial equipment.

I wouldn’t be looking at a “set” necessarily.

Few decent quality wrench manufacturers offer much discount for buying sets (which is another way of saying they don’t load the prices of individual tools) once you get to the larger sizes.

As rust in the eye says, big wrenches are big money, so you don’t want to get involved with any you don’t need. Worth considering used if you can find them, since the bigger sizes don’t wear much either.

As to actual sizes, 24, 27, 30 and 32 are the common sizes, used by the DIN and ISO standards. 23mm is less common, but it’s used on older French products, and I think it’s a JIS (Japanese) size too.

All depends what you work on. Generally, buy the wrenches for the standard used by whatever you own.

I have tractors at the farm that require larger wrenches on some nuts and bolts. Large wrenches in the drawer include 21mm-27mm, 30mm, 32mm, 33mm, 36mm, 40mm and 42mm. The larger wrenches in the drawer are primarily Tekton with the exception of one 32mm Craftsman (purchased at a farmer's estate sale).

Cams in GM 1.4 L T engines require a 24mm to hold the cam when inserting the pin in the timing chain tensioner when setting the timing or removing the head. I used a 15/16” instead.

my drill press uses a 24 mm headed bolt to lock the tilt of the table. a previous owner wrote 15/16 next to it, but it's a metric nut and bolt.

I was just glad that I found an SAE that was close, so I didn’t have to stop what I was doing and have to run somewhere and track down a wrench that I’ll probably never use again.
