Why not use shipping container as storage buildings? They are stong and cheap. I would put 2 about 30" apart and put a truss roof between. One of my friends put one beside his shop for a tool/ parts lock up. Alot of guys around me build the metal building kit garages, are they better than poles or studs?

The type of construction you are thinking of has been discussed here many times with many great ideas. The main problem seems to be local construction codes and zoning laws.

Depending on the size - all you have to do is put a set of wheels under them... then they are parked trailers. Many states now have State Laws that prevent local zoning from prohibiting home owners from parking RV's, Car Trailers, Restoration Projects etc beside or behind their homes. SEMA has worked that in many States now.

So put a set of wheels on the container - many construction companies do this now. Then when they arrive at the site - they lower the trailer to the ground..as the wheels flip up out of the way.

Who knows - maybe you'll get lucky

I have one in my back yard about 20 feet from the shop door
Works great
And WHEN I move (I hate Las Vegas) I'll just pack it full and have it hauled to the new place

I've been in the market for a couple of containers for several years. I should have purchased a long time ago. Between the rising price of scrap steel and the shift in the US exports over imports, the cost of used containers has gone from about $1800 several years ago to nearly $6000 now. Part of that is that virtually every seller want to deliver and make a premium on delivery, also driven by high fuel prices. None that I have contacted would allow me to pick it up, regardless of current location.

I still intend to round up a couple, but I'll be looking to relieve someone that needs them out of the way. The market price is just out of hand now.

Look for old semi trailers. They can be taken off the frame and sat on the ground just like shipping containers.

Tell them if those containers are so valuable just ship them back where they came from. Somehow I don't blame them on delivery though. Unless you have the specialized equipment to handle them it could get messy and time consuming. Plus you would have to come into their yard and futz around taking their time and blocking their access which they are not set up for or insured for.

What are you calling cheap? Around here they are $3000. You can get a lot of real building for that much in materials

Shipping containers are no longer cheap vs. conventional stick frame construction, if you try to purchase one from a shipping company or similar.

They would much rather sell their damaged or end-of-life containers off to recycling firms, for all of the reasons Torque1st mentioned, above.

The only way they are cost effective, is if you can buy one from some private party or business which already has one, and just wants to get rid of it (and doesn't know or care about it's scrap steel value)
