My dad didn't need one of these things to know how I drove, the rounded-off outside corners of the tires told him all he needed to know. :3gears:

LOL... yeah when I was first driving my dad would check my tires to see if I was scraping curbs or burning out.

Yes, in *newer* cars the onstar system can disable the vehicle. However even in those instances I've read there is a lot of legality that has to be done before even the POLICE can get onstar to stop a vehicle they are chasing.

If Onstar started disabling vehicles for people not paying things like that I guarantee you people would either be ripping that out of their car or buying a different brand!

But in theory, it is possible (and the technology is in place) for big brother to disable your car if, for example, you didnt make a car payment, or insurance payment, or had unpaid parking tickets, or your licence tags expired, or your ex reported that you missed a child support payment, or the check engine light came on and you may be polluting.

Or they could just send a tow-truck to retrieve the car or send some goons to slash your tires. Just because new technology exists doesn't mean you are at higher risk.

This thread turned hilarious real quick!

I'll pass on the monitor too, I like old-fashioned insurance. The day it becomes mandatory will be the day I convert to driving older cars full-time I guess. I have a list of about 20 that I would love. Being a member of this board hasn't helped that list !!!!

On the subject of repoing.... I know a guy that started a business by basically having vehicles drive around town with cameras on top (much like the google street-view cars). The cars go in parking lots and apts and such... Anyhow he wrote software to recognize the license plates, that combined with GPS data allows tow truck companies to search for a car and find out all the places it's been and the date / time.

About a year ago a notice was in my insurance bill ( Liberty Mutual) that stated the company was allowed to download our cars " black box " after an accident. A person could opt out , but you risked not having your insurance renewed.

I just got this in the mail. I always knew Big Brother was watching us. But now he wants us to help him spy on us! Check this out!

When you drink allot of boos's,as I'm sure you do, you just get paranoid in general! Don't worry about every little thing you find in the mail, as you often do! They are designed to get you worried, like you are, and seem to have succeeded in your case!

If the government wants to follow me around, it will get pretty boring and they will probably have trouble staying awake at work.

What bothers me most about this, is that whatever information is generated by the plug-in device (that you agree to install) is owned by the insurance company.
Read the fine print. The ins.co. can do as it pleases with the info- including putting it online for general consumption.

Commercial trucks using Qualcom satellite communications have had this for years. They can tell exactly where you are, how fast you are going and if you have had a "braking event" (their terminology) The only place that I couldn't be tracked was in the Columbia River gorge, the cliffs were too tall to get a satellite signal.
