Big ceiling fan

I'm looking for a large ceiling fan and hoping to find someone who has one that can give recommendations. My shop is a 50X100 with 16' ceiling. I live in ky and it gets 95 or so in the summer so the shop gets pretty warm. We work in the shop 5 days a week so looking for something that will hold up

HVLS ( high volume low speed) fans is probably the way to go

At 50x100, one fan probably won’t cut it. For my 40 x 60 x 14’ wall, 20’ peak, a 14’er with a 2’ down rod was the recommended size.
The quietness of HVLS fans is worth the higher cost.

To move enough air to make a difference with wall mount fans is going to require a small fleet of them and will probably sound like you are inside a jet engine.

A friend of mine has two large wall mount fans. He has them installed on opposite walls one pointing to the front of the shop and one pointing to the back. It makes a really nice circular breeze in the shop.

If he opens both doors, he'll point the fans the same direction of the breeze to help push air through.

I put in the large fake big *** fan from Home Depot. From memory, it was two or 300 bucks 10 feet across. Runs fine. I sort of like it. But if I had to do it again, I would instead to get a couple of fans and wall mount them as suggested above.

One disadvantage is, you can’t hang stuff from the ceiling. Another disadvantage is, you can’t put lights above it or it’ll give you a strobe effect.

Have acquaintances with big hangars that have Big *** Fans in them. Only way to go as far as I am concerned. We've gone to their Black Jack versions at work and people haven't killed them yet, like they did the swamp coolers we had. If you've got the need for high bay lights or other hanging things, then the AirEye version is probably as good, just not as powerful or expensive as the Black Jack.

One thing, the BAF units are very quiet for the amount of air they move.

Love them! They run 24/7 not one hiccup........well except will adding my high bay lighting I did forget to turn them off and a wire got dropped and 90dg bent one fan blade. I called and admitted my errors and tried to buy a fan blade, we had a good chuckle, he refused my payment and sent me one for free.



I have three of these and would highly recommend them.

Depends on size of the fan. The Powerfoil X4 in the 30' size is 375 lbs. The 12' is 245 lbs. The Essence, in 8' to 14' is 75 to 96 lbs, according to the cut sheet. Other models have different weights.

I put (3) HD 8' Diameter fans on my covered back patio. (32 x 48 with 12' high ceiling) They work well, very quiet and move a lot of air. Bought them on sale last year. believe they were about $400 each. I'd buy them again.

I'm in the final stages of building a 50x100 shop with 16' walls myself. We installed a single 18' Big *** Fan model Basic 6 in the center of the shop. It's hung from the roof peak of ~24' with a beam mount and extension tube cut to 3' which gives us a about 3' of clearance to the beams at the rotor tips. It's been amazing so far.

It's been running continuously at 1%-5% to circulate the air in combination with two ~40' radiant tube heaters, which works incredibly well. I haven't had it through the hot months in UT yet, but I will tell you that at 100% there better not be loose papers laying around, or they will get scattered.

I would definitely do this again. It's a buy once, cry once kind of purchase (just under $5k with mount, extension, delivery, and tax), but I intend to use it continuously year round.

Edit: I just re-read your original post and see your ceiling is 16', not walls. You will not need an extension as the fan motor/VFD is ~3' on its own, but you need 24" clearance on the tips, so plan accordingly. I recommend contacting them and they will give you recommendations for size, as 18' may be too big. My decision was between BAF and Humongous fan, but ultimately went with BAF (obviously) due to overall value.

Love the generous use of windows at the top of your walls. Natural lighting rules.
