Anyone have experience with these in their shop. I usually work with the garage doors open, so cooling with ac doesnt work too well.

Quite expensive, home depot has this at $3500

About the same money as an AC system!

How comfortable do these fans make a shop in the summer?

I work with the local fair board and they have one in the display building. Awesome. Silent and work extremely well. We never have it set over 3 on the dial (max is 10) - they move TONS of air. Even with people packed in the building during a show on a hot summer day, the building is nice and cool.

I'm sure they're great fans, but they better be for the price tag. $3,500 for a fan?
You can buy an entire AC unit for that.

It's a rip off in my opinion, the company spends a whole lot of money on marketing. Just about every magazine you can think of will have a full page ad for them.

You can get industrial ceiling fans that do a great job for $100 a piece. It's an electric motor with blades on it.

They are made from 8 ft to 24 ft diameter. We have several at work in the parts/stores area. They actually had one running the other day when I was back there picking up a part. The Habitat for Humanity ReStore has one, apparently the HfH big boss saw them and decided that every store with a high enough ceiling was getting one. I was in there the other day, it was running full blast. Rather annoying, and quite surprisingly loud. Lots of gear/transmission noise. One of the volunteers saw me videoing it, asked why, I told him I wanted to record the noise. He said they ran it full blast because the people in charge think thats the thing to do. He said he told them they needed to turn it down so it would not bother people, but they don't listen.

.....on my soapbox now........I know he is telling the truth. The boss lady thinks she knows it all. Prices stuff at half of the HIGHEST retail price she can come up with, and claims it is worth it. They had real fancy spray cans of paint, were $8 to $10 in Home Depot, so she puts them up for $5. I tried to explain to her that they were OLD, out of date, possibly won't work, I was taking my chances, she insisted they were worth it. other HfH store sells any spray paint it gets for $2 max, no matter how good. They know the real world............. off my soapbox...........

I have a 10' Isis BAF in my shop. I have posted it on this site before. Nothing else compares. Most beneficial in the winter to reduce stratifiication. That HD price is actually a pretty good deal for that size and quality fan.

The warehouse where I work in Texas, is hot. We don't have one of these in our part of the warehouse. But in a couple other departments, they got em. When I go back there, aaahhhh. Yep they work, quiet too. But AC. would be better, course you got that electric bill.

We have several in our plant. They are not the Big *** brand but made by Rite hite. Not sure if the cost is more or less than the BAFs. They do work very well and move a lot of air. Ours are 3 phase and run on a VFD.

Fred,
Tulsa Bus Plant has them throughout if you ever make it in there. They move a lot of air. Some early models had weak gear boxes but the latest models seem to have good longevity. Pretty neat construction...the blades are an aluminum extrusion, constant cross-section, with internal ribs. There is a bolt-on winglet at the blade tip.

In applications where a BAF is appropriate, a $3500 AC unit is totally not appropriate. It's not apples to apples.

Worth every penny in my opinion. We have 9 of them in our hanger running 24hrs a day all year long. Never have any problems with them. Our hangers only open on one side so we usually have stale, hot and humid air. These make it much more enjoyable to work on the aircraft. I cannot hear ours at all and the amount of air will blow paper work all over the place.

I would love to hang the Iris in my bedroom as 52" fan we have in here now has to spin 10 times faster to move a lot less air.

Their headquarters are here in Kentucky. Ive been by their factory and had a friend that used to work there. Their products are top notch.
I have seen some fans in agricultural arenas and the air movement is incredible.
