Big Maxx 50000 BTU Ontario

Hi Guys,

My first post here. I picked up a Mr Heater Big Maxx this summer. New in the box from a gentleman that never got around to installing it. It came with the vertical vent kit. I’ve got it mounted to the ceiling but haven’t cut the holes through the roof yet. I’m looking for information on how high the vent pipe needs to be above the roof to meet Ontario code (I live just outside of North Bay). Any help would be appreciated. I’ll give some local contractors a call next week as well to get advice.

it's like minimum 3 ' above the roof where it exits , and 3' higher than any surface within 10' horizontally from the point of exit

ps, hoping to get to Nippising this winter for some ice fishing!

It depends on the roof pitch as well

I’ve got a 4/12 pitch. So I would only need 1 foot exposed through the roof? Next question. Where can you buy B vent in Ontario? I’ve checked home hardware and Home Depot. No luck.

I'm not in Ontario (I'm in Alberta), but Princess Auto stocks the Mr. Heater 4" vertical vent kit (PA SKU 8164899) for $150, or you can order that same kit from Home Depot online and have it shipped to home or closest store. Same deal with Home Hardware out here: takes a couple days to ship to your local store, but they shouldn't have a problem getting it.

Otherwise, try searching for local HVAC supply houses in your area. We have a couple out here that carry Selkirk or Z-Flex venting.

I went with a newDuraVent Vent Unit Heater Kit — 3in. Vertical, Model# 0370

Includes:
(3) 24 in. long pipe lengths
(1) 12 in. pipe length
(1) roof flashing
(1) storm collar
(1) cap
(1) 90° elbow
(1) draft hood connector

B vent is brand specific, you can't intermix brands. ( they each have a different locking system )

Still waiting for my B vent to show up from the local hardware store. Called the local propane company to get a quote for a tank. I got a bit of a surprise, the propane dealer rep told me it’s illegal to use B vent for a vertical vent for the Big Maxx heaters. He said all the Mr Heater vent kits sold in Ontario by Princess Auto, home hardware etc do not meet code.. I find that hard to believe. Can anyone here that’s in the HVAC trade in Ontario confirm or deny this?

Disregard. My propane installer made a mistake. B vent is still fine for vertical venting in Ontario.
