The other day I tested out my new Big Maxx 80btu and it worked great but filled my garage with a light haze of smoke and the smell was awful! I'm guessing they may have put something on the heat exchangers metal for storage/shipping?

Today I ran it again and while there was no haze, the smell was still very strong. So much, that I just left rather than sitting there breathing it in.

How long until this burns off???

Now just for conversations purposes...This is my first time having an "automated" heating system in my garage and I can't help feeling a bit nervous at the thoughts of this thing coming on and off while I'm not in there. (silly I know) All looks good and it seems to work like it should but I guess I'm just an over protective daddy when it comes to my cars and possessions! :bounce: Maybe I will have to sleep in the garage for the first week? :lol_hitti Suggestions appreciated. lol

Funny, I felt the same way at first. I've had it a few years now and love it. I only run when I plan to be in garage. I don't do an everyday heat scenario. I also wired in some burglar alarm magnetic switches in the thermostat loop, if doors are open the heater won't run. No point heating the whole city.

I will let it run unattended for several hours now without worry.

Just finished my install and fired my Big Maxx 80 today as well. Bobs, I have the same feelings about leaving it unattended. LOL I had the same oil burn off but quit after 15 minutes. Going to be nice here again tomorrow, will open the big door and windows and run it again for a while. Still had strong smell as well after it stopped smoking.

Just hooked up my hardly used 20 year old Reznor 2 days ago for the first time. Such a rush knowing I will have easy heat on demand in the shop for the first time in my life. I too feel uneasy leaving it on. I've got a low temp thermostat and will leave it 35-40 degrees when not in there and will turn it up when I'll be using the space. All I can say about easing the fear of leaving it unattended is just make sure you have a lot of pictures of your stuff and up to date insurance policies.

Thanks guys. Good to know I'm not alone. I know this heater is going to be one of those "why didn't I do this 20 years ago" things. :D

...

My gas guy said this is common, and yes they do have some oil on the tubes to protect them. He said if it was a problem, run with the window ope for a few days (when it is not too cold out!) and it would all burn off. Sounds like your heater did get an extra dose of it!
