Hi everyone I am new to the forum and looking for some answers. I purchased a bm heater and found out that it has to be a minimum of 8ft from the floor to the bottom of the heater. Does anyone know why that is? I have a 28x40 shop with 8 ft ceilings i am hoping to use this unit to heat. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

Also check out your local building codes for location of where you would install hanging natural gas heater. Here in large city in KS, code says it has to be even or HIGHER than the rails of garage door so that tall vehicle couldn't drive into the heater, tearing it off wall and causing leak.

Many prior installs I'm sure are "grandfathered" in where they were installed in corners of shop that were perfectly safe.

Sorry I don't have specific answer for the 8 ft minimum from floor, but it may be related to above issue.

Dont quote me on this but i just recently did my 80k mr heater install and i do believe in the manual it says 8' to the bottom of the unit in a business. In a residential area it was 6'. I do remember reading that somewhere and believe it was in the heater manual. Ive got 10' ceilings and just set mine around 7.5-8' to the bottom of the unit.

I'm wanting to install a Hot Dawg. Briefly talked to a plumber doing work at my neigbor's today. Explained I was needing a gas line run to garage location for heater. Plumber also mentioned the bottom of heater needs be 8 ft above floor since it has an open flame and fire hazard, etc. My local building dept says they go by 2009 IRC and 2009 International fuel gas code for requirments. I don't recall seeing anything in the free online code info about 8 ft in residential, but I get the feeling the free online info may be an abbreviated version of what the actual code books say. As previous poster mentioned somewhere I did see 8ft in commercial applications. Said this to the plumber and he said he's been in the business for 30yrs, knows the codes and knows I can't install this heater and have it pass code. Plumber said he could install the gas line and get it permitted, but that is where his work stops. He said I could install the heater and make the gas connection, but since the floor cleanance would not meet code and fail inspection if there was ever a fire 100% liability would fall on me. He is going to bring the actual code books for me to look at and see for myself. Does anyone know what the 2009 IRC and IFGC says pertaining to this matter of clearance off floor????

It's for code. Min 8' for a non-sealed combusion heater. This is to help prevent fire/explosion due to flammable vapors.

If you need to mount it lower, you'll have to use a sealed combustion heater.
