Big Maxx ignition problems.

I just got done installing an 80,000 btu big maxx in my garage. I’m having problems with it igniting. When I can get it to light, it works as advertised. I’ve adjusted the manifold pressure according to the manual with a manometer to 10” WC as per my elevation (I’m located in Quakertown PA). The problem I’m having is that I can rarely get all 5 tubes to light without some kind of assistance. The bottom two or three will light, and it will try to light off three times, like it should, but 9 times out of 10, all five will not light.

Anyone ever have this problem with their big Max? My tank is full, and everything is brand new. I read that people have problems with their circuit boards, but I doubt that’s my issue, seeing as the igniter is working, and if all five tubes light, it works very well, and throws heat like it should. I haven’t contacted customer service yet. That’s going to be my next step unless I can get some advice from you folks.

Just a guess......inconsistent gas pressure ? What is the pressure while it’s running and or starting vs static pressure ? If the line small and or long distance from the tank ?

If it was used rusty burner and flame transfer slots would be a possibility.

The unit isn’t used. Just got it about three weeks ago, just hung it and wired it and whatnot over the weekend. The line is under 25’, and is 1/2”, running off of a full 100lb tank of propane. All steps were followed to convert to LP. According to my manometer, which is hooked to the manifold side of the valve, when the call for propane kicks on it registers and holds a steady 10” WC, and maintains it when it’s running with all burners running. How would I go about checking the flame slots? How much if a gap should there be?

The flame slots are not likely a problem on a new unit. The slots just need to open and clean. Unless they crimped too tight or bent during install at the factory.

Is there +/- spec on the gas pressure where 11” or 12” would be acceptable ?

Is the code on the board “ saying” flame sensor error.
The flame sensor is at the end burner, is it clean ? Is the flame getting to the sensor just not in time to satisfy the board ? Or flame never reaches the sensor ? Sensor could be bad, bent out of position or not a good electrical connection.

New unit time to call the technical support ?

I’ll have to double check the manual to see about the gas pressure. The code I’m getting off the board is a double blink on the LED, which translates to a no flame code. Like I said, once all the tubes finally light, it runs just fine and warms the shop right up, it’s just getting it to light itself that’s giving me a world of trouble. I’m going to fiddle with it a bit more tonight, but if I can’t figure it out, I’m giving tech support a call.

One big max tech reference gets really close to 11” with:

“10.9” w.c. for LP/ propane gas should be maintained for proper unit operation.“

Another .9” (10% increase ) might do the trick ?

OP states "Manifold side" set/reads 10". Showkey is correct stating 11" on the Supply side. What is your Supply pressure?

This is probably not your issue, but I have had occasional troubles with my Big Maxx 50. I could wiggle wires and sometimes that would help, particularly the electric wires into the box on back. The last time this happened, I did see the double green blink inside. I redid those connections with wago connectors and have not had an issue since.

It sounds like you are using LP/propane gas. Are you running it off a 20 or 50 pound stand alone cylinder?Based on what you are describing, you are either losing pressure under load/fire or have bad carryover on the burners. Leave the manometer on the gas valve outlet/manifold side and watch it fire. If the gas pressure is dropping below 10" WC, you may have a bad regulator or inadequate supply pressure. Make sure your unit has the correct nozzles for LP and the gas valve is set up for LP as well.
