Big maxx wifi thermostat

My heater should be getting installed in the next week or so. It's a big maxx 75k. I would like a wifi thermostat but heard you might need some extra things to make it work. Anyone running a wifi thermostat with a big maxx heater? What did you do to make it work? I'd love to order a thermostat before they get here to do the hook up. I've heard great things about the honeywell from this link

Don't see any reason that thermostat won't work. You are using it in a heat only arrangement and the Big Maxx has a C wire connection if I remember correctly; which should allow it to work as intended.

That's excellent news. I'm going to love having the ability to turn the heat on or off from my phone. The goal is to someday have heat and garage doors go through my phone. It's the one thing I always have close.

There are now many options for wifi besides the one you linked to. If I were putting one in today I would probably go for the Honeywell Lyric. The big feature it has is geo-fencing. It keeps track where your smartphone is and when you leave your house it will setback the temp when you get "X" distance away. Likewise when you return it will setup when you get with "X" distance. It also supports multiple phones. If that feature has value to you it might be worth considering.

The Lyric gets terrible reviews. If you can afford it, but a Nest. I installed one in my shop. So nice being able to turn the heat in before you're headed out there

I've done the same thing with my Hot Dawg and Insteon technology. Works great. The garage doors take the furnace out of heat mode when they open and then restart it when they close. I also added timers so I know how many times the furnace cycled and for how long each day. I haven't tried the geocaching yet. It can be problematic and not reliable based on a few factors. I've tried it before to automatically open-close the garage door without much success.

Ya I dunno how I feel about something like that. I like programming it, then having the ability to change it from where I am. Plus with that would you have to leave the gps/location on. I think that ***** up data, for those of us that don't have unlimited.

I've heard mixed reviews about the nest. I guess I'll have to do some more research on the matter. Thanks for all the input so far!

That's the feature I want. Have it on Low to maintain some tempature out there as I do work out of town a lot then when I ready to work on the truck that day, just turn it to a more suitable tempature... I think shirt and shorts during the Canadian winter be about right.

I just installed 9 Ecobee3 wifi stats. They stand out from the other "smart" stats: data logging and usage reports, geofencing, and the ability to do smart set back/up based on weather data correlated with learned building recovery. They also integrate ventilator control...and automation via ifttt, wink, smart things etc. You can also add up to 32 remote temp/occupancy sensors (wireless) to control behavior based on temp or occupancy. They launched a few yrs ahead of Nest, but did not see the hype. Their commercial stats are a more like building controls than stats..

My former wife loves to take expensive vacations. We live in Ohio, which doesn’t exactly have extravagant places to see unless you like to watch grass growing or interstate construction. While we make OK money, I’m convinced she felt the need to single handedly improve the US economy by taking elaborate vacations: Broadway shows in New York City, gambling in Las Vegas, Spa’s in Arizona, sightseeing in San Francisco. The airlines know me so well they ask about my dog when I call to make reservations. His name is Fred.

In my attempt to try and save whatever I could so the princess could have her nice things I bought this Honeywell Wi-Fi enabled device so I could adjust the HVAC while we were away piling up massive amounts of debt on Mickey Mouse watches. I thought we could save a few bucks by keeping the temp cool in the winter and warm in the summer. The device was easy to install. I did not have the “blue” connector so I had to re-purpose the green one - this required an adjustment to the actual HVAC unit in our home. There are plenty of videos on Youtube to demonstrate how to do this. Within an hour I was up and running.

The device works flawlessly. You can adjust the temp from anywhere you have a Wi-Fi or cellular signal. Little did I know that my ex had found someone that had a bit more money than I did and decided to make other travel plans. Those plans included her no longer being my wife and finding a new travel partner (Carl, a banker). She took the house, the dog and a good chunk of my 401k, but didn’t mess with the wireless access point or the Wi-Fi enabled Honeywell thermostat.

Since this past Ohio winter has been so cold I’ve been messing with the temp while the new love birds are sleeping. Doesn’t everyone want to wake up at 7 AM to a 40 degree house? When they are away on their weekend getaways, I crank the heat up to 80 degrees and back down to 40 before they arrive home. I can only imagine what their electricity bills might be. It makes me smile. I know this won’t last forever, but I can’t help but smile every time I log in and see that it still works. I also can’t wait for warmer weather when I can crank the heat up to 80 degrees while the love birds are sleeping. After all, who doesn’t want to wake up to an 80 degree home in the middle of June?

How did you set it up for the garage doors to take the furnace out of heat mode? Is that part of the thermostat capability or something you wired up?

It's a pretty simple contact closure for "heat on", so you can install the I/O linc's relay in the thermostat line, and use the input for a reed switch or whatever to tell if the door is closed. Then simply link the two.

You actually don't need Insteon to do it, you could just have the thermostat wire run through the reed switch to accomplish the same task minus the flexibility of Insteon control.

I'm not sure how familiar you are with Insteon, but in this case the thermostat communicates via RF to the Insteon network (note, this is not via WIFI but via its own network) to an Universal Devices ISY 994 controller. It is this device that contains the program logic to control the thermostat. There is a sensor-controller on the garage doors to detect open or close status.
If you are familiar with Insteon and you have a setup with the ISY, I can send you the code and wiring diagram for the thermostat to the Hot Dawg.

Hello, new to the forums. I have the MHU50NG. I did install a new wifi thermostat for it. Unfortunately, the common wire does not send the gnd to the thermostat. The red wire does control the heat with the W1 wire. And the Fan does turn on with the G wire. But when the unit stops heating, or when I shut off the heat, the fan power cycles off and on. I've read this is because it's trying to gain power from the red wire to power it. It needs the C wire connected but it is. So not sure why I can't see 24V on a multimeter when I connect the GND (C wire) and Red (positive lead) to the multimeter. Am I missing something like is this a millivolt wiring setup? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

on my small renzor I had to add a 24v 40va control transformer to provide enough power for my nest.

I could probably mount that at the Furnace. I have 5 wire strand ran to the thermostat. Did you jumper the 24V wire to the red or did you eliminate the 24 v wire from the furnace? And just use the transformer power?
