Big old Dawn Vise

Looking at purchasing this vice, however I know its not worth $600. He says its only 150-175 lbs, I could offer him $200. That also follows the $25/inch of jaw width.

Looks to be in good shape, I think it'll lasts more lifetimes if taken care of.

If he's asking $600, I'm sure he'd take $200, NOT. Quite frankly I'd be surprised if you even get a response, wouldn't get one from me.

First time I heard this phrase. That means a baby bullet is $50.

Really depends on the shape of the vise, how big of a vise you want and how many are out there. I believe that vise was made in Australia and if you know their quality then offer him a fair price, $200 might be a little light in my opinion. 8" vises are big. To big for a bench unless you like working on a step stool.

That was the biggest that Dawn made. The swivel version in that size would be somewhat rare. The only other 8" ones I have seen on either Gumtree or ebay over here have all been the fixed engineers vices and in the last five years I have only seen probably three other 8" ones for sale. One of them I recall sold for only just over $100. That was a bargain but sadly interstate. Lots of 6" ones that go for $120-$150 mostly fixed with a few offsets and swivels that go for about another $50 on top. So an 8" swivel Dawn vice would be considered rare. $600 is a lot though. The fact that it has 200 as the size indicates it is not what I would consider vintage. It would probably have been made around the mid to late 70's as that was when metrication came in here. Prior to that of course it would have had 8 in there somewhere like 8BP.

There are far better vises out there for half the money or less. At least out my way there are.

Offering this guy 200 bucks will likely get you nowhere. You're too far apart.

I learned that very thing here on GJ when I first started lurking a couple years ago (the $25/inch jaw width comment). It was repeated numerous times by regulars and by someone claiming to be an expert with Wilton Bullets being the exception.

I didn't believe it then nor do I believe it now.

I agree with members above that if you have to have it then fine but there are much better vises out there to be had for that kind of money.

JEK: that vise i think has been for sale near me locally for months now so PM me if you might like a 6 inch version of it for a reasonable price or i do have a few others cause i'm slimming the heard and helping members put old vises on their workbenches.

or offer $200 and see what he says cause if it doesn't have an cracks or welds or any issues Dawn vises are well built.

ALL: by the pound or by the inch are just expressions and maybe at one time when we made $2 per hour 50 years ago it might have had some merit. some guys try to price old anvils buy the pound and OMG those are all over the map depending on brand, condition and locations.

I have one, been thinking about selling it. It's got a chip under the stationary jaw, very weathered, but works. I restored another one to what I consider better than new, but I work in a large machine shop with access to equipment. It now resides on top of my Lista

Showing my age but I remember an old rule about sailboats or yachts being $1000/foot. That was a long long time ago.

I've an old Dawn vise under the bench.
Thought with a name like Dawn it was probably from one of those foreign countries.
Guy wanted it gone. Said I wasn't interested, didn't need it, didn't want it, happy with my old Hemklem 6" and Record 4".

Got it for nothing.

I wouldn't go $600 for that, but I'm pretty sure I'd go more than $200....maybe $350 or so if there's no damage.

It just depends on where you are. I found 5 Wilton bullets in a week not long ago. Do you have a particular size you're looking for? This lineup goes from 3.5" to 6" although the 6" models are Tradesman rather than machinist models.
