I bought a 1 inch roundover bit to enlarge the 3/4 roundovers on my deck stairs/railings. It barely fit the Bosch 1615 evs 2 5/8 opening( bit was 2 1/2). My table mounted Milwaukee 5625 only goes to 2 1/2 in base but 4 1/2 in table. Cmt said for router table use only. I was ok freehanding it. I did run the router on speed 3 due to wide diameter. Only router I know of that has a big base opening is the Festool OF 2200. What’s the biggest you used freehand? Mines 1 inch roundover

Bosch 85465M 1-1/4-Inch straight cut... in my drill press. I think it counts because I was "freehanding" the block of wood being routed. It was terrifying - and didn't end well.

Edit: Those stairs look good by the way.

I have been using my router for some projects the last couple weeks, of all the tools I have I fear that thing the most. I have a fairly chonky 45 degree bit that always gives me the willies to use. I usually make a bunch of small passes with it.

The two bits that make a hand rail cutter set, the top is about a 3/4" radius round over, the bottom is a long about 20 degree champher, both for table use only but I used them in the old single speed Elu.

I’ve freehanded several curved handrails that were spooky. The wildest was a 6” radius on curved stock in a spindle shaper though.

I think between the screaming noise they make and my basic understanding of physics and reactive torque, routers just scare the hell out of me.

Worked briefly for a company that made dog house and garden shead kits Ran a monster router arm manually inside a plexiglass template cutting 5 sheats of osb. Had a swing of about 6 feet. Worst job I ever had!

I would have to look, but I know it is over 2", maybe 2-1/2". I have an old Porter Cable router. Model 7539 I believe? They called it a 3-1/4 HP, heavy sucker, I just checked, 17 pounds, big motor, lots of power. All I remember is I took 3 passes as I wasn't strong enough to hold it back for one pass! Either that or I need to eat more beans. It spends about 99% of the time in my router table.
