I made a bottle jack type lift several years ago, think I had about 50 bucks in it not counting the jack which I had. Turned out fine but it was a royal pain to build and in all honesty wasn't any better than what you can buy at H.F. for about 50 bucks. If I were going to do another I'd make a scissor lift. Best advice I could give is to save up and buy a handy lift, I prefer the electric one.

you talking a lift to work on a motorcycle? or a lift to hang a bicycle? if the former, i've got a set of plans I lifted from somewhere to make a full size lift table out of 2x and plywood and black pipe, uses a floor jack.

Another idea a lot of guys use if you just want it up off the ground to spin the tires is a piece of 2x6 with a hole in one end and a 4' pice of pipe in the hole, stick it under the engine and lever it up onto the wood to get it off the ground enough to change tires and stuff...let me know. Have also seen guys use a scissor jack from a car with a plate welded on top to hold the bike.
