I just ordered a Bilco cellar door for my house. It comes in Primer. What would be the best method and paint to paint it? Should I use normal spray paint, should I use a roller and brush? harbor freight gun with some rustoleum and some type of thinner?? I'm not sure, never painted one.

You could use a HF gun and spray it or get a foam roller and roll it on. I would use any good quality outdoor metal paint that you are comfortable with and have at it. I think you would be satisfied with either method.

I originally painted mine with a regular oil based enamel. Didn't look good after a few years and I was getting some rust spots. I sanded back to bare steel, applied an epoxy primer and then a 2 part urethane top coat. That finish still looks good and has not gotten dull or chalky. I brushed both on. Finish color is gloss white.
You might try some boat paint as an alternative.

How about roll on bed liner type material. Should be plenty durable and may be available in different colors.

I installed a Bilco door when I built my house 25 years ago. I spray painted it with Rustoleum that came in a qt. can. It lasted for about 15-18 years before it faded started to show some surface rust. I disassembled the unit and repainted it again and it still looks good today. I found that a foam style wood garage door bottom seal works great as a gasket between the Bilco unit and the concrete foundation. I would have to check my records for the exact one that I used but it was something like this product.

thanks for the info. I wasnt really sure where to start. I'm going to look into the Rustoleum and the 2 part top coat. good Idea on the rubber gasket, I thought it may come with some type of gasket, but I'll make sure I install one if it does not.

Although I have used fair share of Rust-Oleum and been happy with it I try not to use it for things that see alot of sun and the elements. I am a huge fan of PPG pithane ultra. I have painted numerous things with it including my aluminum boat trailer with pittguard as the primer and my goodness does it clean up nice 3 years later with a quick wash.

I've painted several Bilco doors and the key is disassembly, otherwise there will be unpainted areas that start to rust/flake. I've brushed, sprayed and rolled paint with little discernible difference.

Go to a paint store and look at a two-part epoxy paint...Muralo, Rustoleum, Sherwin Williams, and others make it. It's durable, wears well...we sprayed a lot of it at the sandblasting place I worked at one point in my life. I sprayed a lot of natural gas transmission line and wellheads with it. It's typically a commercial product...not available in most stores.

You could also look at a one pot epoxy...
