If only that tool box could talk..... It would have some great stories to tell. Though I never saw him race I can honestly say that when he passed away the automotive world lost a true giant!

I'm interested in one specific Wally from about 40 years ago. I was at that particular race and during a long rain delay I got a chance to talk with Grump for a while. He seemed pretty confident about his chances that day and he was right.

A true innovator and used a real scientific approach to engine building. I have a couple of his books and can honestly say I learned more about what REALLY make an engine tick from his books than any other source.

That would be a fascinating box and auction to see and go to.

Boy would I love to have that. Actually, I'd just love to have an hour or so to look at it and go through it.

Its cool to see his toolbox, but sad to see it for sale. It belongs in a museum. :3gears:

Pretty cool, but I was expecting it to be quite a bit larger and more organized before clicking on the link. Looks like the average DIY'ers box you see in a home garage, but then, I guess that's what it is!

Of all the Saturdays in May, I have an annual swap meet that I always set up at. I was ready to go proxy bid for you guys......I have that box and it belonged to a drag racer, but his name wasn't Grumpy.

It ain't the tool box, it's the mastermind spinning the wrenches.

Very cool because it was Grumpy's. I would settle for one tool from that box and one of Smokey Yunick's tools for the history of them and the coolness factor.

Wasn't implying Grumpy was average. Just commenting on the box itself.

This is going in a place of honor in my shop. I also have a set of huge NOS Jenkins Competition decals and a set of smaller ones I need to frame or do something cool with.

$3,000.00 plus...

Toolbox will be displayed right next to the race car...

Small change to the collector who just paid well into six figures for "Grumpy's Toy" # whatever...

$3K?? Hell no. Closer to 10K and may go a lot higher than that. If Bruce Meyer is in on this, he might take it home at any cost. Some of these guys play hardball.

On the box, it is pretty disorganized. But what gets me is all the screwdrivers. Let's face it, a dozen is plenty unless there are nut drivers and Torx in there as well. I have more than that, but I promise I could do without a lot of them. There are 3 sizes of blade and 3 sizes of Phillips. Add in some shorties and longs and you're done.

As previously mentioned, there are some guys with so much money, they just walk around looking for places to throw it.

At a southern street rod show, I overheard a big time collector who already owns about thirty show cars talking to a builder about a high dollar show car he liked. At the end, he said, "I'd like you to build a car for me. What you've done here is really good, so you decide what it's going to be. Just send me an invoice and some photos every month or so."

Very cool, lots of well earned patina on that box. Always interesting to see the tools that the masters use. If it is good enough for them.....

Would be interesting to know what it goes for at the auction.

I only hope I can lead a life as successful and remembered as his.

That would make a great match to Smokey Yunick's big ol' dial-face tire gauge I have on a shelf in my office.

On the drivers, not to someone with a pit crew and motivation to remove a dozen Dzus fasteners in a hurry. You have a bunch of 1/4" drivers for that...

You will also have a bunch of 15/16th's combinatin wrenches, at least for Sprints and Modifieds, and other cars using a lot or 5/8 spherical rod ends...

OK. It was $20K, trust me. ;) Wonder who bought it?

O I trusted you, what would you have to gain by lying about it? :dunno:
I don't know who bought it, but all I can say is if they buy things like that I would REALLY like to see their garage
