I've been doing a lot of reading here and researching all over the web the past couple months. Learning a lot more about construction, electrical, lighting, heating, ect then i ever thought I would. So I guess I'll start my own thread here to document my up and coming backyard shop.

So my plan is:

30x32 at the back of the yard, Max square footage the township allows on our lot size.

12 foot walls, can't be taller then the house again per the regulations, so that will put the peak right about the same as the house, give or take a couple inches.

Sided to match the house, or at least the front wall in vinyl and the other walls in a close steel color. I'm back and forth on steel vs vinyl siding.

Shingled to match the house

10x16 overhead door. This I really want so that I can back one of the trucks into the garage on a trailer if needed after a long weekend of off roading. Also to shoehorn my boat in for winter storage.

Scissor trusses more then likely.

Windows? Maybe a couple on the south and west sides, undecided

Pex tubing in the concrete for future radiant heat is a must have. Cold concrete *****! This and the 10 foot door are all I really want lol

I will insulate and finish the interior myself

Well that's the plan. More to come, albeit slowly until spring

I'm currently waiting for a couple more quotes before I make my decision on a builder.

Had an excavator here this past week for site pad prep and removing a couple stumps from the location.

I'm learning there is more to this building stuff then I had previously thought, permit for this, permit for that, permit for everything lol

Lastly...Has anyone else drawn their property to scale, or am I just crazy? I have a lot of down time at work to brain storm. Its kind of handy because it turns out what I thought I wanted to begin with isnt as appealing to my eye now as my current rendition drawing is.

You don't mention, although you likely have researched it: electricity.

I just finished my hobby shop. I placed 110v outlets every 4 feet along the walls (I opted for 20 amps each vice the more common 15 amp outlet's); they are also 4 feet up from the floor. This placement eliminates extension cords and precludes the outlets being hidden by benches, tool chests, and such. Consider outlets higher upon the walls for stereo, smart speakers, TV, clock, neon man art, etc. I see you are in MI so you may not need it, but consider power for A/C, too.

Your planning needs to incorporate 220v outlets, too. Items using 220v include welder, lift, air compressor, oven (for powder coating?), and others. Speaking of lifts, 12 feet is the minimum height to fit one; it may limit your choices but not by much.

Finally, don't forget the exterior. Plan for an outlet on each wall; lighting over doors; yard lights; security lights; an extra 220v outlet just inside the garage door but allows welding on the apron of the garage.

Ive done some research on electrical. I am more looking into that now that i have made my decisions on the main structure and what I want there.

For sure I want to have more then enough outlets available as our house garage has only one. Whoever thought one outlet in the garage was a great idea obviously never worked on anything. Good thought on the 20 amp outlets instead of the typical 15amp ones. An electrician friend from work suggested running two circuits and alternating outlets between the two. I will defiantly have a circuit for my welders in several places.

Extension cords and air lines laying around are my nemesis. I cant stand using a 50 foot cord or 25 foot air line in a typical sized garage. Stepping on cords, cords getting tangled up, cords getting stuck under tires. That stuff drives me nuts!

Its good to see plenty of Mopar friends here! I believe i need a couple more posts before I can figure out how to post pictures. How do we attach or post pictures here anyway?

Right now I'm only at two.

1979 Plymouth Trail Duster

1974 Dodge Ramcharger


The Plymouth was my dads truck, I bought it from him and it was my first ride when I turned 15. Learned how to wrench, paint, weld, break parts, and cruise the strip with that old truck. She is in poor shape now days(floor pans and under body structure), it has been a Michigan truck since day one and had seen too much salt. I plant to frame off it once i have the garage and build it into a real off road toy.

I picked up the Ramcharger a few years ago with the intention of only using the body tub on the 79s frame. Well, it was too solid for that(zero rust!), now its my cruiser showy truck that will only see sand dunes for off road. It came from Arizona and has never been driven in the winters up here. The only snow its seen is if I pull it out of the garage to work on something else. I'm nearing what Im considering close to "done" with it for now. Its never done... So far the 360 was rebuilt by the previous owner(have paper work), I rebuilt the transmission, axles, regeared, lockers, 6" lift, crossover steering, custom guages, painted it, ect. I just built a np205 heavy duty transfer case to swap out the full time stuff it had factory. That needs to go in this winter with new driveshafts. Then a full roll cage next winter.

Funny thing is Ive always been a mopar guy. Ive owned and built a couple chevy s10s and blazer. And now we have two Fords in the driveway for daily duty. I guess that makes me well rounded lol

Compared to other sites, this one is horrible for posting images. Back when Photobucket was free, it was way easier. I've asked several times on the site what is the easiest/best way to post images but, haven't really received a definitive answer. What I've been able to figure out is that in the "Additional Options" box below the "Reply to Thread" section, click on "Manage Attachments". You can then upload files from your device and insert them as thumbnails. These are only viewable when you log in though. Or, you can upload files to your CP on this site and then copy and paste that file using the image icon (in the "Reply to Thread" section) when it asks for the URL but, you can only do this for one image. This image is viewable without having to log in. Or, you can use the mobile app, which I'm not a big fan of. You can load images directly from your mobile device but, I haven't been able to figure out how to upload more than one image into a thread. I believe others are using hosting sites, I tried that but wasn't able to successfully attach an image to one of my threads. Maybe someone could suggest a good hosting site (free) for us to use.

All the other sites I use, I can simply upload an image from my device and place them anywhere I want into a thread. Part of the reason I stopped posting on here and don't post as much is that it is a ***** to post images.

Well things have happened since I first posted. I've been extremely busy over the winter with work, working on cleaning out, cleaning up, and remodeling my parents house to prepare it going on the market. Lost my dad last summer and I really don't need two houses to tend to that are ten miles apart.

So on my barn build... That happened!

I pretty much stayed with my original plan

30x32 shingled and sided to match the house
Walls ended up having to be 11.5' to appease the government on over all height
Scissor trusses
16x 10 overhead door, couple service doors and a couple windows.
Radiant floor heating installed for a later date(like before fall) project to get it all working.

Concrete was poured last week.

I'm going to run the wiring and natural gas out some time this summer.

I can't wait to get working on finishing the inside and working on other stuff out there. For now I'm just waiting on the overhead door to be installed and concrete to cure...

Sounds like you will have as much as you can within regulatory limits! Pex in the slab will be oh so nice for the future to combat the cold. Can't wait for progress pics!

I started reading this thread and it's almost exactly to the letter what I'll be posting once I get my permit. I'm going to be putting up a 24x32 garage and in it, among other things, I'll be building my 1968 roadrunner.
I'm allowed 14' to the top of the roof. I'm doing Pex in the floor as well.
