Bill's basement garage/fab/machine shop

So my wife and I bought a house this past July, and now I finally have some space to set up to work in. It's a 1600sq ft rambler with an unfinished daylight basement/shop (also ~1600sq ft). We bought the house from the guy who had it built in 2003, but he never finished the basement into the shop he'd intended it to be. It came with a separate 200amp panel/meter and an 8' garage door already in place.

Plans are to put in two walls, one for a machine tool room (I have a Logan lathe and a Bridgeport Mill), and the other for a storage area for parts. I'll divide the rest into an area to work on cars (in front of the garage door), a fabrication area (I also have Miller TIG and Lincoln MIG welders), a benchwork area, and the rest general work space. So far I have the concrete walls primed and partially painted (white), 10 lights (4 bulb T8 - probably will need to buy about 8 more), all the insulation, some of the wiring, and enough Armorclad gray epoxy to do all the floor.

Some pics of what I started with:

Looking East, you can see the space wasting 1200gal cistern for the well behind my track car.

Some pics of the wall paint. It was a real pain since they'd never knocked off the snap-ties so those all had to be cut off and ground flush. Then the concrete boogers had to get knocked off. I stopped short of grinding the wall smooth, though it pained me to do it.

Given the amount of projects I have lined up (5 at the moment), I'm hoping to have this done by next summer so I can get busy on them rather than working on the infrastructure. Projects include: Complete restoration on a 1928 McCormick-Deering 15-30 tractor and my 1967 International Travelall, finishing the turbo and cage install on my '97 Miata track car, a bunch of work I need to do on my '93 Audi S4, and putting my Bridgeport back together (bought it as a "kit" on pallets).

And finally, the 1928 McCormick-Deering 15-30 tractor. Saw this on Craigslist and just knew it was going to go to scrap and I couldn't let that happen. Talked the guy down to about 1/3 of what he was asking and dragged it home. This is about the lowest tech restoration I've done (last one I worked on was a '67 Ferrari 330GTS), and I'm realy looking forward to it.

I figure since I teased about the lathe, etc I'd put up a few more pics. You'll find I like to take lots of them :dunno:

The 1961 Logan 12x24 lathe:

Where I found it

After I finished going through it. Went through all of the carriage/tailstock/quickchange and cleaned and set all the clearances like they were supposed to be. It was basically in decent shape but needed a few parts and a bunch of adjustment.

The Mill "Kit"... it was a pretty decent Chinese BP knockoff that I ended up not being able to get head parts for so I bought a real BP Vari-Speed head which is in process of being rebuilt. I wouldn't have had to take the head apart but the idiots I bought it from thought it would be a great idea to pressure wash it and fill it with water before they sent it.

And I just picked this up last week... Quincy QT-5 Compressor. Paid less than a big box compressor that puts out far less air and has little to no parts support.

Looks like a really nice space to work on projects. What you have done so far looks great, can't wait to see more pictures as you move further along in the work.

You had mentioned putting in two walls and I am wondering if you are planning on putting the two walls where the rows of posts are located? If you do that it would essentially get rid of the posts because the walls would hold up the beams.

No unfortunately, there will be one East-West wall that parallels the beams but about 2 feet away as it's just not enough room if I go to the beam and way too far if I go to the next one. The other wall is North-South so not parallel to the beam. The North-South wall will also cover up the cistern. The posts aren't that bad, I just wish the ceiling was higher.

What are the specs on the miata?

The Synchrowave is the same as the one in the race shop I used to work at, so when I started looking that was what I looked for. Got it off of Ebay, they'd mislabeled the ad as a "Synchromatic" so I got it for about half of what they were running at the time since apparently everyone was searching for "Synchrowave".

The Miata... '97 STO that has FatCat Motorsports revalved/damping adjustable Bilstein coilovers (550lb/350lb spring rates), 15x9 +36 6UL wheels with 225/45-15 Hankook RS3's (in need of replacement), 2001 6 speed trans, '94 Torsen Type I rear, Flyin Miata front bar with the factory 11mm rear bar, all poly suspension bushings except the upper fronts which are delrin offset bushings I made, FM frame rails, currently an HD double diagonal roll bar that is coming out and getting replaced with a full cage. Tons of other little detail stuff I'm forgetting. Engine is out getting freshened up a bit and I'm adding a Garrett T25 turbo, should be about 220-240whp and the car will be down to about 2000lbs. Not a particularly radical build but should be entertaining on track.

The lathe restoration was fun, I served an apprenticeship rebuilding production machinery like that so it was nice to get to do some of that again. The Semi-Bridgeport will be fun too. Pretty funny, despite it being made in Taiwan, it's all standard thread. Really close copy of the oem Bridgeport, to the point where BP parts mostly bolt right on, like the head I replaced the OEM one with. The company that makes them were sold by Rutlands (now part of MSC) in the US when it was new and are now sold under the "Sharp" name.

Getting on GJ is a love/hate thing... I'm seeing some really cool stuff and great ideas. One of those cool things was someone mentioning SketchUp, which I made the mistake of downloading yesterday. So since then I've pretty much done nothing else (I'm off work until Monday).

Here are the results so far...

Not finished for sure but most of the big pieces are in place.
