Binks paint gun help

Hi All,

My dad is going to give me his two Binks (#18 and #15) spray guns that he got from his dad. They are from the 50's(?) and I can't seem to find any info on them, as far as pressure/volume needed, how to adjust etc. I am running a smaller (12-15 gal./125 psi/2.5-3 CFM) compressor and don't paint whole cars. I would paint small projects like furniture/fenders/car parts etc.

So, will these guns work with my compressor? Or, do I need to concentrate on the LVLP guns?

Thanks,

Mike

Unfortunately your compressor will not keep up with those guns, or any automotive type of paint gun. I used to use a 3hp 30gal, 5cfm and it wouldn't keep up with my Binks 7.

Thank you for the input. I will keep the guns for when I get a bigger compressor. I will look into LVLP guns then.

Your compressor wont even keep up with a LVHP gun. Even a 30gal 5cfm prob will not. Unless we are talking about a touch up gun.

A 12-15gal compressor is more for airing up tires or blowing off a few things. Not for tools where you need constant steady flow/pressure.

Even a touch gun uses a lot of air. Main thing that makes them what they are is a small can. I agree with above, this is not for painting let alone paint prep. I have seen some guys make something work but usually on small stuff.
But,,,, dont be a wuss, dump some thinner in them and give them a whizz. Make sure they work, not stuck up and can get an idea of what you can do. I like the old common paint gun, I really do. I am not using modern auto stuff, would get another gun for some of it if I did but I have had better stuff but over time fell back to where I started.

I don't promote harbor freight very often......but get the H.F. purple gun.

If those old Binks guns need any parts to get them to work, it's not worth the cost to fix them compared to buying the 10 dollar HF gun

My old Binks #7 works ok with my Craftsman 240 v 2 hp compressor from about 1980. Don’t remember the cam rating, though.

I bought it way back when through the industrial rep who serviced our plant account. I distinctly recall him selecting a smaller nozzle to enable use with my little home compressor..
I bought a rebuild kit a couple of years ago, so parts are still available, at least for the #7.

Having said that, I use it for panels mostly, and I don’t use it much at all now, even with my larger compressor. I typically use the HF purple, or equivalent. They are almost disposable, at the price point.

The Binks #7 was an expensive gun in its day... highly recommended by the pros. It’s one of these high end tools I really couldn’t afford, and never really got my money’s worth out of it.

I reflect on that purchase when I read threads about Mohawk lifts or all SnapOn tools and boxes for home use... nice, but tools at a lower price point are usually a better investment for non commercial use, as the money is better spent elsewhere.

I've got a Binks #7 I use for color and a Binks #52 I use for primer. Had the #7 since about 1969 and the 52 since the mid '70's if I remember right.

Thanks for the input. Fortunately, I won't be painting a car anytime soon. However, I will begin to learn body work as I have some fenders that need some work. So, if I use them (or the gun I just got for my Bday) it will be small stuff where I can go a bit slower. If nothing else I will have lots of time to practice before getting a really nice compressor.

Tell your Dad thank you! Clean them up and see how they work. I would probably display them for what they are and pick up the $10 gun at Harbor Freight. I doubt you can get a rebuild kit for the Binks for that price. The HF HVLP gravity feed gun is way more efficient with air and paint than the siphon feed gun.
Sprayed this cabinet and trailer wheels yesterday with this $10 gun and it still does a decent job with reduced Rustoleum. Will be painting my F350 soon.

I had a Craftsman copy which after decades, finally fell-apart. Not worth the $ to fix it. I got it used, the Binks 69 (below) too.

Here is a Binks Model 69, I media-blasted the cup, so no 'Fordite' (look this up, I bet you'll be surprised) gems are growing on it. I have some motorcycle body parts I'm going to be doing soon. For what body shops demand for doing a tank and two fenders, I can afford a lot of experimenting.

I also have the Harbor Freight 'purple gun.'

The Binks #7 was the industry standard when I started autobody in the mid 70's. I think I paid around 150.00-170.00 for mine when I bought it. That was a lot of money back then.
