As I said in a previous post, there was a heavy gasoline / chemical odor that got all over my clothes just from being in the garage. The garage was not climate controlled and I had stored gasoline and other chemicals in it for about 20 years. My first choice was Kilz Original Low Odor primer and that knocked out about 99.9% of the smell. I can't smell anything when I enter the garage now, but there is still this faint odor on my clothes when I go back in the house. I attributed at least part of this to the fact that I decided not to use Kilz on the cinder blocks that make up the first foot or so of my walls.

After a little research, Biocide Systems "Room Shocker" seemed like a good bet because it was a gaseous substance (chlorine dioxide) that would likely get into all the nooks and crannies. One tub is supposed to handle 400 square feet, which is more than enough for my 16x16 garage. I followed all the instructions, activated the product, and let it go for 24 hours. Once the residual ClO2 smell wore off, I was still getting that faint odor on my clothes. The garage isn't as air tight as my house and it does have 9 foot ceilings. So, I decided to try a double dose. I got 2 tubs of Room Shocker, set them off at the same time, and let them work for 24 hours.

In the end, that faint odor remains on my clothes after being in the garage, but I didn't consider this a complete fail. I had given it a very difficult job considering how porous the garage is and how long the odor had been building. The lingering ClO2 smell let me know that this was a serious product that might work well on a lesser challenge. The fact that the residue is just salt water is also a plus in terms of safe disposal. I'd be interested in hearing if anyone else has experience with any of the Biocide Systems products.

I'm guessing the biocide room shocker is designed to kill mildew, mold, biologicals, and eliminate those odors. I'm not surprised that it didn't eliminate petroleum and chemical odors.
