A downside of adapters is the square end is another potential source of run out.
fixed screwdriver > bit holder > bit adapter

Some bit adapters are better than others. The 3/8 drive 5/16 hex Ko-ken is pretty good. Fits snug on both the square and hex ends. Unfortunately, the 1/4 drive Ko-ken has a design flaw --the detent is too shallow to engage bits properly.

The Proto USA is only $3.57 and I'll probably add one to my next Zoro order.

I think they are a good option. In fact, I used one for years in 1/4 drive as an alternative to buying hex bit and Torx bit sockets (much cheaper). Still have one in my road box (max capability for minimum bulk) and another that lives on my 1/4 drive speeder.

They are generally thicker than a dedicated bit ratchet. You wouldn’t think it makes much difference, but I seem to need these bit ratchets all the time now, and sometimes it does.

I was using my Wera bit ratchet today, taking a seat out. There was room to get my bit ratchet in, and even get my finger behind it to hold it in the screw, but it wouldn’t have been so easy with a bit holder.

Until I got my first bit ratchet, I did the same. Where the bit ratchet excels is in short distance. They have much better access without the adapter.

This is one of my go-to’s. The thumb ring on the Craftsman bit socket is VERY handy. The socket never leaves this particular ratchet.

Thanks for the input. Today I also bought a 4" VIM bit ratchet wrench and your input has confirmed that was a good decision.

Here is another reason to have an adapter. Occasionally I need to switch between several different bits during a project and rather than switch bits on one driver it is more convenient to have a few drivers loaded with the different bits that I will need. Adapters are a cheap way to add more bit drivers to ones quiver and they take up little space.

lilredex was smart to take advantage when Amazon had them for $1.57.

Bit adapters are Great!!! they're just not as low profile as a bit ratchet but, offer great versatility if clearance isn't an issue. I have several types. Some are magnetic, some have like a circlip inside, some are impact rated, all are great to have

I picked up a couple at NAPA last time I went. I don’t remember the regular price but they were about a buck a piece with my account.

I have like 20 of them from buying random lots of tools but hardly ever reach for them..
Always just seem to use a 1/4” socket if I’m putting one on a ratchet or otherwise am already into but driver type stuff..
I more often go from bit to square drive than the other way around..

I like that it has a nice thumb wheel and if clearance wasn’t as issue I could see using it on a regular ratchet but I got a cheap Gear wrench but ratchet which is handy for tight spots.
