I bought that same jack new about 40 years ago. It is red except for the handle, saddle, and cover plate between the rear wheels are painted white. I had the jack overhauled three years ago and still use it.

Wow!!...you work fast. You've done a great job with your jack. I'm sure it will be good for for at least another 30 years now. Did the overhaul of your hydraulic unit go smoothly?

Only issue was the on off valve it leaked so I had to take it apart again and that caused some nick that I had to touch up, so no more leaks and it works like a new one all over again. If it last another 30 years some one else will be rebuilding it next time. lol

wallizs,

You might want to send Bull a PM. He might be able to help you positively I.D. your jack. He just got a whole bunch of new Blackhawk jack info:

http://garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=93555&highlight=Blackhawk+jack

I happened to have the older camera and the Blackhawk repair manual in front of me, so I snapped some shots of the SJ-17/SJ-23 diagram. The jack in this thread looks different to me. :headscrat

Thanks for looking at this Bull. This jack has been a really tough one to I.D. I was hoping that the colored small pic of the S-23 in your catalog had a smooth lifting arm.

I will take a pic of the small picture later, so you can see it. But it does look the same as the black and white pic in the service manual.

Welcome to the GJ! The S-23 appears to have come with a couple of different lifting arm design styles. I've finally got a parts list that does show the S-23 with the smooth lifting arm configuration.

Thanks for posting pics of your jack, it sure looks a lot nicer than my S-17 did before it was restored. Any plans on restoring yours?

My old S23 used to belong to my father-in-law's dad..... so needless to say it's gonna be restored. Disassembly is complete. Already have rebuild kit. Getting her ready for paint. Should I reassemble the power head, then prime and paint or paint then rebuild the hydro unit?

I would recommend that you rebuild your hydraulic unit first. Then, after any other required component replacements or repairs, reassemble the jack unpainted. Perform any necessary hydraulic unit bleeding, load checks and any basic op checks. If you encounter any leaks or other operational problems you won't have to mess up your new paint work to get things sorted out.

After you feel like you've got the jack working correctly, disassemble and paint. Whether you paint your components separately or while everything is back together is a personal choice.

I would also suggest starting a new thread for your jack. If you have the time, document your progress w/pics. This might be helpful with your rebuild and also for others following along.

Pick this gem up on Friday. 3rd Blackhawk I've picked up in the last 30 days...

I don't believe the handle/release is original and was missing the ID plaque..... but, I wasn't going to complain for $25... Same shop had a 4 ton HW for $30, but, someone already snatched that one up.....

Any idea on the year? Looking at Bull's guide in the above post, it's somewhere around late 50's/early 60's. Also, in case the release handle is not original, anyone know where I can source one?

Brian

Nice score on a sweet jack. I'm thinking this style with the raised lettering on the lifting arm is the final version of the 1.5 Ton "Curb Jack" made from the mid to late 50's. This style and the earlier version of the S-7 are my favorites of this series.

I'm not sure about the complete handle, but the "T" at the end is certainly not original to the jack. Hard parts for these are not easy to come by. Send Hiball a PM, he may have some suggestions. He can also supply the soft components to rebuild the hydraulic unit if you choose to.

If you get a chance, please post up some pics of your other jacks...
