I picked up a Black and Decker 4300 drill sharpener at an estate sale a while back, and finally got around to trying it. Here is the manual for reference: http://vintagemachinery.org/pubs/101/4818.pdf

Part #8, the locator, has been ground off. That is apparently common. These parts can be found on ebay by searching for "black decker 43002".

Got the bits aligned by eye, but it appears I'm not the first one here. Specifically, somebody seems to have replaced the grinding wheel with one that is too big. It works, but the extension rod hits it if you tip the jig back too far. That is, part #20, the pivot arm, grinds against the side of the wheel. The workaround is just to not tip it back that far.

I've read elsewhere that the grinding wheel is supposed to be tapered. Does anyone have a source for these wheels, or at least some more definite specs? Diameter, taper, that sort of thing?

Between not being able to tip the jig back too far and the wheel not being tapered, it probably is not grinding the profile it is supposed to. The bits I've sharpened seem to work, but they might be a lot better with the correct parts.

Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

Followup: apparently it is the original wheel, because the few videos I've found show the same grind scars on the the pivot arm.
and
, for example.

This seems like a really obvious design flaw. "Oh yeah, if you move that too far, it'll hit the grinding wheel. Just don't move it that far." There are adjustments to move the guard as the wheel wears. Maybe the wheel itself can be moved, like to tension a belt, I'll have to look.

And the wheel on mine was not visibly tapered. It was worn, lower in the middle of the edge than on either inner or outer rim.

Thanks for this!

I picked up one of these sharpeners for $10. The locator is ground down and thanks to you, I was able to order some replacements from ebay.

The wheel on mine seems pretty much brand new. It has a slight taper, but not much.
