I think you were fine @ $25.

Not sure about 40 years old on a 200 however, maybe closer to 30? I got my 200 about then, maybe less.

Here's a B&D table top version I picked up for $10 this weekend. Composite base and composite jaws, but it will get the job done. At least the dogs aren't that offensive orange.

I blame this thread for this purchase. Normally I would have left it behind.

outlawmws - I "assumed" the date on the sticker was the production date. My bad! Appears to be in relatively good shape, but the right side slide/nut assembly can lift up. Is this normal? Only own the newer version of workmates and have no idea if it is somehow broken, or normal.
Thanks for the assist.

I couldn't read that pic. Maybe it is that old. :dunno: I'm just reporting about when I got mine, I didn't think the 200's were that old.

What are your thoughts on this Workmate 225? Posted recently on Craigslist in my area, wants $30 for it. If it looks like a good deal I'm going to try to pick it up tomorrow. Thanks.

If in decent condition thats a fair price. 225 doesn't have the swing up dynamic jaw like the 4XX series, but I rarely use that feature ever.

Thanks. Looks to be in decent shape, although the ad says some small surface rust on the bottom. I am hoping to have 2 eventually, and I'll want them matching, so whatever I buy now I have to like long term.

That may be a 400 or 425 with the tilting dynamic jaw. It's not a 200 for sure, the back jaw is bigger. Not sure about the 3xx series.

I don't think it's a 425. I have had a couple of 425's and those have a middle plank. This one looks like it only comes with 2 planks/jaws.

Seller just got back to me and told me it weighs ~35lbs (he doesn't know the model # either; said he bought it several years ago). I'm looking for something lighter and easier to stow away than my 425, so looking for a used 125 or 225 (or older equivalents).

Anyone try both the 125 and 225? I like how easy it is to fold the 125, but not sure how sturdy it will be. I have the Harbor Freight knockoff, which seems similar to the 125, and that is not as sturdy as I'd like, which is why I'm looking at the 125 and 225.

If you are looking for lighter I'd stay with the 200 or 225. I dislike the TV tray models, and the WM is likely to be just as unstable as the knock off...

You're probably right. From what I can find online, it looks like the 125 only weighs ~2lbs more than the HF knockoff, so it can't be much better.

I love how easy it is to open and fold the tv tray models! I wish the larger models didn't have 2 sets of legs. Those bottom legs are a pain to open and close, and I never use it in the lowered position, so I get no benefit from the height adjustability.

Use some lube (Beeswax/Door-Eaze) on the leg tensioner widgets; this does two things: makes it MUCH easier to get the legs in and out, and you are far less likely to break one of those plastic things.

Just picked up this 79-001 Type 2. Couldn't pass it up at 20$

Along with the 400 I bought earlier this month. Little rougher shape but everything functions as it should.

This was posted for Free on kijiji 3 hours away from here. Looks rough but a lot better than something I'd consider posting for free.

Had a guy give me two workmates and another cheaper version of it today that still needed assembled. I'll have to see what models they are. It was raining and I just threw them in the truck. He advertised them in Craigslist for $25. I told him that I was planning to use them to hold scroll saws when we have our pinewood derby car workshop for scouts and he said I could just have them. This year we will be using my new 30x40 garage to have our workshop for all the boys instead of using the church hall. I now have four of these. I think I have a problem...lol

After seeing what they have been selling for on ebay I might have been tempted to drive that far.
Luckily I have mine and for a decent price. I haven't been scouring around to find another very hard but still, I think they may becoming more scarce for cheap money.

Scored yet another one today. That's three in the past two days. I've got five now...lol Worked on a guys car today and he had a garage sale last week. Some stuff didn't sell and he said I could have the workmate, cabinet, drills and tool box.

Picked up a workmate today. It was $50 with a craftsman sabre saw so really paid about $40 for it. 79-004 type 1. Has 3 of the peg inserts. Now I can stop using a crappy sawhorse when I want to grind outside.

Wow. I didn't even know this thread existed. I'm part way through "reconditioning" mine. I've had it since it was new around '95. For the last several years, it's been sitting outside my shop through all kinds of weather. I finally felt sorry for it.

All I did was disassemble it, repaint it and put new feet and leg catches on it. I'm amazed that after all these years in the weather it has held up as good as it has. They must have had better metal treating and powder coating processes back in the '90s because I've had metal, powder coated toolboxes that didn't hold up this well inside the shop.

But here it is waiting on me to cut some new tops for it. I was going to use some 1" oak but I have some 2" that I think I'll use instead. Maybe next weekend. Had too many irons in the fire this past couple weeks.

Earlier this summer, Blue Frog made a great offer of a Type 1 a few hours away from me. Well, the summer flies by and I still haven't made the drive. But, look what showed up right in my back yard this week. As for the price, it was no-brainer and I'll leave it at that. I only have the one kind of crappy picture of it sitting next to my 350. It's a 79-001 Type 8 (I think)with the blue frame. Not an ounce of plastic on it. Look at the size of this thing. It's a brute.

Blue, thanks again for making the offer, but I don't think my garage is big enough for another one.

Love this thing. Already used it to strip the paint off this SpeedGrinder housing.

Glad you found one locally McB, and the welcome mat will still be out should you make it down to Columbus.

Blue and Outlaw, you are both enablers. :)

I was cleaning off the frame of my new old workmate and found something interesting. Take a look:

Made in Republic of Ireland.

By the way, Rustoleum Safety Blue is a very close match to the original paint, so that is what I'm going to use.

What Model? Pics?

Small parts are sometimes available for the steel framed units but only things like bench dogs, plastic hinge latches for the legs, and the like. You need a parts donor, or if its steel, weld/reinforce...

Has anyone taken the plastic handles and replaced them with aluminum or steel ones?

My first real Workmate. A 300 model found at a local area barn sale. All steel version with some rust on the rear bottom frame that will need clean up and paint. But the wood is in good shape and all four plastic dogs are there. I dont' think it was used much, probably just sat around a lot.
I've had cheaper off brands before and used them a lot so I'm looking forward to trying out the real thing. I didn't think $20 was too bad a price.
