The part that Terranova is replacing broke on mine. I had it upside down and was pulling the legs out when it broke. It hit me under the chin with enough force to really hurt and be glad it didn't hit me in the eye. Please be careful with these could have been much worse.

Just modified my workmate... I have the table top "tool box" type...

I did a dado and installed a T Track. It lost the name "workmate" as the t track goes right thru the name but it has become more useful now. Guess I need to update this post later with a photo...

**Updated** I added the T-Track... I stuck two incra hold downs in. I also decided to show an update I did over a year ago... I riveted a Tape Measure holder on the side... it fits in the dent perfectly...

I have one of the real low end models (125 I think) and have like it. It's very handy but I understand considered less desirable. Found a model 225 on CL yesterday for $25. Not a "steal" but I got it anyway. Perfect shape including paint. I'm pleased with it so far.

$5 is too much to invest in having it work right? :headscrat

When I have probably 8 that need replacing it becomes an issue yeah. :pimpflash
I'd like to try to make some out of wood with maybe a sheet metal bow spring...but we shall see what happens when I have more than a few hours of sun to deal with on a weekend.

Did B & D make them for other companies? I have one that looks exactly like a Workmate but the brand name is Alltrade. I got it in the early 80s.
CORRECTION: mine is an "All Bench" made by Wen.

I would not be surprised... pics?

Soon as I clicked reply I knew I would get a pic request, even pictured your avatar. But no emojis . . . really? :dunno:

Mine is under a project right now so no pic of mine till weekend. Tried to find a pic online no dice - not even a vague reference to mine ever existing. Oh and CORRECTION: mine is an "All Bench" made by Wen.

Have same model except in black. Use it quite a bit as bench, vice and such in garage when working on car. Definitely like the vice like jaws that will hold a pipe from turning. Still not sure I like the pegs but the table top vice is a nice addition.

If you get a tube/dispenser of "Door-Eze" (any parts store, very similar to beeswax) and coat the rubbing surface it will cut the breakage to almost nothing.

What happens is the surface gets rough and if it sticks, it breaks...

You wil tell instantly that the issue is much less likely after trying it.

This is what I do on all of my Workmate leg catches as well. Either Door-Eze or straight-up beeswax rubbed on there cuts the friction and eliminate the binding that can lead to breakage. Makes all the difference in the world!

I have two of them for many years. Both are formed steel rather than the cast one in the picture. One is similar in design to the one in the picture but the other is much bigger with a removable center table.. My chop saw is on the small one and the big one gets used for everything. One of these should be in the Smithsonian or the Museum of Modern Art.

Can somebody tell me what the top boards are surfaced with? It is obviously plywood with something that looks like phenolic on the faces. I know there is something similar sold by Woodcraft and I suspect that the faced stuff sold for concrete molds may also be similar. I would like to replace the center section on my 400. From assorted spills and glue it is kind of ratty. I could use formica or leave it bare or oiled but I would love to know what they used. Thanks

For those that complained about the cost of adding a T Track with some hold down clamps to a table top workmate... I've got a bit further...

I loved it so much...

I added a second T Track and got my T clamps organized for a group photo. :rocker:

I agree it looks like MDO plywood, not easy to find in my area.

:rocker: You can never have too many clamps!

What did you use to hold the lever clamps? The sheetmetal under them? I've got some clamps like that but they're intended to screw into a board. Interesting to see ones with, what, counter-sunk bolts from underneath?

Ahhh yea... that was annoying to find. They are sheet metal flats that screw to the 4 holes in the clamp... they provide t track bolts and narrow nuts. The T Track bolts they provided were a tad "under whelming"... so the ones in the picture are from my collection of t bolts. ... Let me dig up a link...

And, of course, they're "currently unavailable" on Amazon. I did manage to find them on Rockler.com.

And when you want to pay extra, on Lee Valley:

Maybe Woodpecker makes some, for even more money...

For what it's worth... the rockler ones (what I have)... can be used for many things you want to attach to a T Track... basically anything you can screw to it via the slots that are spaced to provide many choices... can be attached to a t track.

I have been on Kijiji for awhile looking for the cast aluminum WM. Most of the ones I saw were either in bad shape and expensive or in good shape but much more expensive and not what I wanted. But low and behold my patience paid off. I picked up a cast WM in clean condition with all of its parts except for 1 leveling leg and 2 bench dogs and the owner threw in a wood Mitre box for $15.00.

Those vintage alloy ones are nice! I hope I stumble upon a mint one someday...

I have a 225 (steel, particle board) that has been to hell and back, still does its job but the particle board is showing its age in some places...

Picked up the larger 425 at a garage sale, and IMHO it is next to useless... Bigger, yes, but clumsy and not very useful. If you want to pick one up, go for the cheaper 225!
I have a big and a small one also, steel and plywood. The small one is my miter saw stand and I use the big one for everything. If anything happened to it I would be beating the woods for a replacement. It is not that portable but I don't need it to be.

I agree, the smaller ones are netter suited for general use. and having two identical (At least in height) is even better (for times you need to handle long material and need a second support) Also good for supporting something as a table to (work or large gatherings)

Other than when you need the vertical function of the jaw, the big ones are better suited for a relatively stationary tool stand IMO I used mine for the big RAS before I bolted two MW/Waterloo 3 drawer rollers back to back for the purpose, and it also supported my bench model Taiwan DP before it was converted to floor stander (And later replaced by a Rockwell Mod 15 with a treadmill Motor.

Once I get things re-arraigned, (maybe this summer) it will become bench tool central for racked bench tools.

Hello all. I found a Workmate model 79-001 type 7 at a yard sale today for $15 and was wondering how much they originally sold for, but I can't find any info online specific to the type 7. It is steel framed, dual height 29" and appears to be in good working condition. Any info about this model and type would be appreciated.

Thanks Outlaw. Sounds like I got a deal that is gonna last me awhile. The only difference between the one you found on Amazon and mine is that the body is grey instead of black and the handles are black plastic instead of orange. It is an extremely sturdy model, probably made in the late 70's to early 80's.

Very nice score! I'm holding out for my second one at a good price like that. Not paying the 250+ I see them advertised on ebay for!
The lone one I have is excelent though and get most any job I have anymore done quite well.

There is another one listed not far from my house. It is a little more expensive. I think he is asking $30. I just hope he won't sell it before Monday. I am celebrating Easter tomorrow and don't want to bother the seller on Easter.

So I finally went to see it, and was a little disappointed. It looked better in the photo, but I spoke to the owner and picked it up for $15. I will want to change the top as I don't like it. I had to clean it up a little, it had paint spatter all over many surfaces and missing 5 of the screw on leveling feet. Oh well this is life. Model no on the top label is 79-001

Hi -- new member here. I came across this discussion about Workmates and I registered for the forum so that I could contribute to discussion. I learned a few things by reading the old messages, and I think I can add some more info that will help others.

I currently own four Workmates and I have owned (and sold) four others in the last five years. All eight of mine have been variations of the original design, dating from about 1975 to 1979 and differing slightly in materials and details. They have all been dual height 79-00X models; I've never had any of the 2XX, 4XX, 5XX, benchtop, wall-mount, etc. models, so I can't speak to those at all.

I think of these original Workmates as falling into three categories based on the material used in the frame: 1) all aluminum, 2) aluminum and steel, and 3) all steel.

I currently have (oldest to newest production):
79-001 Type E all aluminum Made in England
79-001 Type 2 aluminum and steel (this and the next one are identical) Made in Canada
79-001 Type 2 aluminum and steel
79-001 Type 4 all steel (This is my own original Workmate, bought new in 1977. All the others are older production, but bought more recently, in the last six years or so.)

I've sold:
79-004 Type 1 aluminum and steel Made in Canada (identical to the next one)
79-004 Type 1 aluminum and steel Made in Canada
79-001 Type 4 aluminum and steel Made in Canada
79-001 Type 2 aluminum and steel Made in Canada

I sold three of these on eBay, and they may have been among the sales mentioned by members here because of the high prices! The fourth one I sold on CL for much less.

That's it for an introduction right now -- I'll be posting more in the next few days.

In the meantime, since everyone always wants pictures, here are some of the 79-004 Type 1, which I don't think I've seen mentioned here before. Its distinguishing feature is an attached multi-outlet power strip. Also a good photo of its carton and owner's manual.

Just scored this Type 2.
I had been looking locally but couldn't find a Type 2. And most of the eBay stuff was really expensive with shipping. But then I bumped into this on eBay... it was listed a little obscurely and very dirty in the picture, and marked NO shipping. But I made a offer higher than the $79 ask, and begged for shipping and it worked! $100 is a lot for an old workmate, but it was worth it for me. Just pressure washed it and lubed the feet. Even has the original clamp widgets in a bag, they look unused. It's just marked up enough that I wont be afraid to use it. :D
