Maybe dumb question, but why not just paint regular pegboard? A good primer and paint should get you black or any other color you want.

Great question... Not being a smart ***, but I just don't want to. I have other projects that I need to finish, so would just rather spend a few extra dollars and buy it already done.

I painted some old white peg board black that was in my garage when I moved in. Just used some cheap gloss black spray paint that I had laying around and it came out surprisingly well. I only re-purposed a few small sections of it so it might not be feasible if you want large sheets of it.

Wall Control makes black metal one, but it would take several pieces to get to your size. I dont believe they sell a large sheet. Home Depot or Lowes (I forget) sell plastic ones in like a 12"x12" or a 16"x16"

The money you save painting it yourself will probably pay for a large majority of the hooks you'll need once you start hanging stuff.

Ok
Looks like I'll be painting it.
Any tips on how to do this without steaks from a rattle can and/or without a sticky/tacky finish?

no matter the colour, wall control metal pegboard is so much better than masonite pegboard. It's worth the extra cost. If you really want, you could get the unpainted one and paint it and save a few dollars.

Personally I love this stuff, super tough and strong and not prone to aging/moisture like traditional peg board.

I use 'tempered' peg board which costs a little bit more and I never had any problems with aging/moisture. The two sheets I have over my workbench have been there about 10 years

Not sure why smaller, metal sheets would be better. I think the thickness (1/4") helps hold the hooks in and keeps them from moving around more - especially compared to a thin sheet of metal, but to each his own...

I would be interested in hearing why 'wall control metal pegboard' is so much better

I use Slat Wall, you can usually find it on Craigs List. I've been using it for long enough that I have a bunch of hooks..so if you have a bunch of peg hooks its more of an investment.
