Anyone have black garage walls? About to start re-doing my 22x28 garage (used just for parking) and want to do dark grey or black walls. I have new led lights for the ceiling. Cant decide between race deck flooring or armorpoxy (that's what I have in my shop).

While I love dark colors for their richness. I had a dark blue floor and plan on black ceiling so i just ran the blue up 4 feet and the rest of the way is white. but its only paint if you don't like it

I would highly recommend against this. Dark walls really **** out all the light out of the room, regardless of how much lighting you have. At a certain point, it feels like it ***** the energy out of you personally when you walk into the room. I've purposely painted my walls in my garage a very light color so I get maximum reflectivity in the space when working on stuff. And it just plain feels and looks better.

Use black as an accent with trim and whatever you put up on the walls (poster frames, etc)

Agreed, dark colors are not great for a shop environment if you want to see what you're doing. The repair shop behind my office at work was a dark gray inside. It was just bare blocks that were never painted, but they were a dark shade. They installed better lighting at one point which improved it, but still dark like a cave. One winter during some down time they painted all the walls white. The shop had to be 10 times brighter.

On a smaller scale, a similar comparison can be made in my own garage, It's a wooden pole building with unfinished walls on the interior. I was installing a small storage loft in one corner for large, heavy car parts like doors & hoods. I didn't want to move them several times so I insulated & drywalled that area before filling it up. I painted it white & the reflective light that comes off it is super bright. You can see it in the right, rear corner of this photo....

I'd suppose if it is "just" used for parking, the black might be dramatic.

Sherwin Williams has a tool for uploading your own photo and then colorizing it. Might try that and see what you think.

But yes, as @Kaizen said - it's just paint.

Its 100% just for parking in. I have a 26x68 shop right behind my house for working in. I understand black for working in would not be ideal and wouldnt even consider it if I had to work in the garage. I just saw these and they looked better than I thought they would with the black.

I figured you were talking about tires.

Terrible idea. Anybody that does such either doesn't work in their garage or spends a mint on electric lighting.
I think it's about style in a garage that is just for parking. I still think it's a bad idea. Just keeping it looking clean would be a huge pain.

For parking - this looks cool as hell and seems plenty bright for a parking garage. The Hex lights still light the place up well.

Bad idea; if you ever need to repair or touch-up the paint - and you will - it will always show.

I go with an eggshell white on the sheetrock and a gloss bright white on the trim; while it does need occasional touch-up whenever it’s bumped or dinged - stuff happens - the touch-up is near invisible.

It’s just one of those annual rituals; once the paint can is open I go around and get it all at one time.

I say go for it (dark gray, black, whatever). It's your space, do what makes you happy and don't worry about what anyone else thinks.

The romantic hills of central Umbria, Italy,
Some things about black - it does show dirt and cobwebs, and you need a BUNCH of widely spread out high lumen fixtures, both above and below. It will also make the space look REALLY small... Friend of mine thought it would be cool to do the bedroom flat black, then have blacklights and posters... the effect should have been cool and bitchin, but you'd walk in there and it felt, well, opressive, like a morgue.

We helped paint it out once the fad had passed (and the cat was in treatment for depression, no ****!), we must have thrown at least half a dozen coats of "high opacity high coverage" on it before it started to cover. So be warned, it's kind of one of those things you have to commit to.

Also - I used to frequent a bar that did the upper foot and change of their place in flat black (from just below the fire risers up), and it DID look mighty cool, but when you looked up, you could see the cobwebs, dirt, etc. I asked the manager, she said they spent a couple days every few months going up there, cleaning it, touching up the black, etc... so yeah, you might be into extra maintenance. BTW, they put a ton into lighting, and it turned out OK, no idea what their power bill was, but when they turned on their maintenance lights, it worked.

However you go with it, good luck! Just because I wouldn't do it (mine is a working shop), doesn't mean you shouldn't, just go into it with your eyes open. My thought is now that they have those high lumen LED strip lights, you could run them along all the edges (even the floor edge) to enhance whatever lighting you otherwise install. The first time you drop your keys or wallet under your ride, you can thank me!!!
