Blackhawk "Chief" tool chest

Hi,
Newbie here....If I'm in the wrong place please let me know...
I just got this awsome tool chest. From what I've been able to find I believe it's late 1920's to 1930's and probably came loaded with socket wrenches etc (too bad they're gone).
I bought it to sell it but have not been able to find any comparables. I was wondering if anyone here could venture an opinion or two.

A while back, I too found a Blackhawk toobox . I asked for some info. Here is the thread. There is some usable info and some cool Blackhawk advertising from 1931 that shows a box that is very similar or possibly exactly like yours.

Ya think it's been repainted? I hadn't considered that, how would the decal be dealt with in that situation?

Oh yeah, I see signs of a repaint all over.

For example, let's look at this picture:

You can see the brush strokes. The painter apparently just got close to, but not right up to, the decal. You can even see the black color around the decal is a lighter shade.

I'd say that's pretty close...

It can't be earlier than 1930 since that was the year "Lock-On" tools were introduced. (The "Chief" line was introduced in 1929.)

I do believe it is a "Treasure Chest" 70 WD.

Consider this ad from 1935:

As you can see, the decal is very similar to yours (even though the box is different), so I'd guess somewhere in the mid-1930s for your box...

Well, I would not fret about the repaint too much. Now it is in pristine useable condition. Load it with tools friend and use it for what it was made for.

It's great that the decal is intact. A nice repaint to the original color would not be that big of deal but finding an original decal would.

Take some very good closeup photos of the decal and have a sign shop can reproduce it for you if you decide to strip and paint.

Get the decal scanned & reproduced. Then refinish the box & apply the new decal

or sell it to me, where ya located & what ya asking?

Well.... I'm asking $60 and have someone coming to look at it later. If that doesn't work out, I haven't weighed it but it's kind of heavy. I'm in NW Arkansas..... Can we have these kinds of discussions in this forum or would we have to take it elsewhere? Don't want to violate any rules and all

Nah, you're fine so far. This started as a sharing/questions thread, your intent wasn't to list the item for sale here. If that does become your focus, then you can start a thread in the classifieds.

Well it sold today. Good sale IMO, sold it to some young guy who's been buying Blackhawk tools and felt they needed to be in a BH tool chest. A quick turn around for me and a good home for the tool chest.

His father said he was in college. I feel good when I can connect someone with something from the past they can appreciate. I sold an 80 year old micrometer depth gage to a machinist last week who bought it for his job.

Where we live are lots of retirees who have tools they've kept all their lives. And they have taken very good care of them. Every week there are estate sales and some times I get lucky. I enjoy them for a while then pass them on (sometimes I keep one). I'm more of a wood worker but I appreciate good tools of all kinds. I imagine I'll be back with a question or to share a new find.
