Very similar to my S.O. ‘Vacu-grip’, but the bail to hold the pliers clamped is a great idea, but I notice the new ones don’t have it…why not?

^ that style of pliers was made by a number of different companies, some with that ring, some without. I'd speculate it was more a cost-saving measure than an "early-late" thing.
I only have one pair of those - an old Indestro set. I hated those silly wire clamps - damn things would fly clear across the room.
