I have here a Blackhawk 2 ton model S13, s/n 215995 and wonder what the approximate age is of this jack.

Recent purchase...will likely need a rebuild. HiBall mentions special tools...like what? I am fairly handy but wonder if this model requires more skill than I can muster...comments?

New here...will try to upload a picture or two

Thanks for any info

Its hard to say, Im guessing Early 40's into the 50's. As far as the specialty tools required, The Big 3 back in this era used special nuts/adapters that where designed so there products would only be worked on by "Authorized service centers" The blackhawks in particular required internal spanner sockets to install and remove the compression nut that held the Vee packing in place internally. Now.. Over the years ive seen these jacks come in where someone has used a long punch to do the same job and it literally destroyed if not ruined the jack. If a person has uses some common sense and has access to a welder and some basic metal working skills they can re-create a tool that will work. I will say that the job is 100X's easier with the proper tool though.

Thanks Hiball....I plan to clean it up some this weekend and hope that all I need is new fluid. Does not look like it is missing any parts save for an odd bolt that is in place in what appears to be a fluid fill hole near the reservoir. Odd looking deal, may have to get a picture. As mentioned, I am handy but making a tool is beyond my ability...and I am not aware of any rebuild shops here (StPaul,Mpls area) so may have to sell it on the local craigslist. Shame...jack is massive and very classy

Hiball,

This S-13 looks to be the same design as the S-18 that you picked up recently. The frames look the same, and both are rated at 2 tons. Could you please tell us what the difference is between these two models?

Other than the fact that mine has/had a broken handle and is missing the cover plate i dont believe i ever ID'd it. I would say your Blackhawk knowledge of Models by Picture is better than mine. They made so many different models that were essentially the same jack, that it makes it hard to ID without a tag. Do you think mine was a S-18? I remember Grandpa told me that you ID'd the Blackhawk jack from across the room based on the handle. LOL

Yeah, I'm getting to where I can at least spot an older vintage Blackhawk jack from across the room and sometimes I can spot one from a less than perfect picture. LOL As you know better than me, trying to I.D. old jacks are sometimes frustratingly tough to do.

Maybe I'm going on assumption here. I have seen an S-18 in a previous pic, and based on your thread and PM pics I assumed that it was indeed an S-18.

Being that this is the first ever S-13 that I've seen a pic of, naturally I am confused again. :headscrat

If only there was a book that showed me all the old Blackhawk jacks from the 40's and the 50's I could stop all this nonsense of trying to figure what they all are. But then again, for me, learning what they are is part of the fun...

Disassemble the jack and send the bottle to Hiball via UPS ground. I'm sure he can rebuild it and send it back to you.

While it is gone, clean, repaint if desired and put it back together when the bottle comes back fresh from the rebuild.
