I like the FORD red Don!, It looks like it might be slightly metallic, is it?

y'sguy
Wait til the clear goes on then that red should just jump out of the picture
Yes it is a metalic color
Incredible. Thanks for letting us follow along Don. It's like kicking back with a beer and watching some guy named Michelangelo paint a ceiling.

JoCo
I don't know about that Angelo guy but thanks for the complement.
I didn't get the clear sprayed today because when I looked at the parts that I had painted some needed a little more work so I resprayed a couple of them. So clear tomorrow if all goes well.

I worked on the jack a bit today.
I got the clear painted on the jack body and it looks pretty fine with the polished logo on the side

2019-09-21 16.00.13 by don long, on Flickr

I had to look at it in the sun light and does that metallic flake jump

2019-09-21 16.02.33 by don long, on Flickr

I hadn't worked on the handle before today. So I got it apart and gave the pieces a little bead blast to get the paint off of them. Now I can decide how to proceed

2019-09-21 17.01.01 by don long, on Flickr

It looks like I will need to make up a switch for the light if I want it to work again, but the contacts are there for the batteries.

Don: looking good that is for certain. I noticed you (or maybe the last guy that took the handle apart) damaged the screwdriver thread a bit and I wonder if you have any of these old drag links.

the old drag links work for me on some of the big screws in my vises so thought i'd mention it cause having the right tool for the right job might save you some work and even make your restorations even better.

I mentioned this on the Party Garage thread and thought I'd mention it here too since you are documenting your restoration here so nicely.

did you sand (or grind) off the circle with the line on the side of the jack's cover and then spray clear on it?

man that color is amazing and is it close or the same as the Vette's color?

Interesting, ¿can you tell me which part number is your power unit casting?, it seems very very similar to my S14, but mine has an external copper(maybe brass) pipe that goes from the pump unit seal pack to the oil reservoir, kind of like a pressure return line. But on all the manuals i can't seem to find that part specified at all

i'm wondering if that's stock or someone had a go at modifying it because it leaked badly otherwise....(it does look nicely done with fittings and all, maybe it was an early thing factory done on the S14?), it's like the internal return gallery for the ram's forward seals that's part of the casting

Yes Drives
I have one of those made by Craftsman. the last owner had broken the jack handle and braised it back together and that is how I found those 2 screws but they don't look like that now.

The logo on the sides of the jack were painted when I painted the jack before I sprayed the clear I sanded off the paint and polished the metal to a chrome shine , then sprayed the clear over the entire jack parts.

No the color of the jack is a bit more burgundy and much more metalic.

I'm sorry but I ground the numbers off when I was getting rid of the casting marks. However when I bought the seal kit for my jack it said that it fit a S13, S14, and an S18 jack.

While waiting on the chromed pieces to come back I found these jack stands that I think will look good displayed with the blackhawk jack

s-l1600 by don long, on Flickr

I picked them up here in So Cal. When I got them home yesterday I cleaned them up in my sand blaster and gave them a coat of primer. today I took care of the minor body work that was needed and decided to polish up the necks of these stands, I first painted the necks with black paint to cover the areas that I can't get to with my grinder then started grinding the necks smooth

2019-10-02 11.53.02 by don long, on Flickr

When the polishing was done I masked the necks up and put them back into the spray booth to apply the second coat of primer on the bodies of the stands

I have a few pair of those Walker jack stands. They are cool and useful.

Don: does your bride (Ann) ever get jealous of your love for spiffing up old rusty dirty steel? man you barely got that home and it's almost ready for the garage. nicely done!!

I hope that your chrome guy comes through again like he always does and that Blackhawk jack will sure look good with your skills putting it all together.

Horse: how did you get almost new 80+ year old jacks or are they a remake of the old ones? SWEEEEET!!

The same way Don got his; busted up and then I restored them. I had the original labels remade at a local sign shop. I've come across two types of jack stands. Ones with and without a square base. I have a set of each.

I didn't know that some have a square plate at the bottom nor did I know that they are walker stands.
Thanks for the feed back.

As long as we can go to lunch in the afternoon together and I come in for dinner in the evening she's pretty much OK with what ever I find to fill up the rest of my day.

yes I was excited to get my hands on these stands and it isn't going to take much to get them ready for displaying

You asked horse how we get almost new old stuff.
We keep our heads close to the ground and our eyes wide open. Then we create the new on them lol

Thanks for the visit guys

Don: sounds like a perfect marriage and after meeting you in person it seems like it really is cause you two are AWESOME!!

yep the way you and Horse and others spiff things up really does make some of your stuff look even better than new. I know you have a pinstriper maybe on retainer, but I didn't realize Horse had one too.

Don,

My local graphics shop has the decals on file and I have sent other GJ guys their way to get a few sets printed for their jack stand restorations.

I will attach a close up of my labels tonight when I get home from work so that you can see what they look like.

I'm making the call in the morning Thanks for the info.

I'm still waiting on the chromed parts to come home so I can put the jack back together. All the paint work is done and the parts look great and I want to get it back together before I forget how it came apart.

Don: I know the chrome guy will have the parts to you soon enough cause he seems to have his shop working for you full time. just kidding or am I?

anyway another good thing about you documenting all of this Jack on a thread is maybe when you go back together you can check this thread to see how to put it back together if you can't recall exactly how you took it apart?

good luck!!

Thanks Jazz

I stopped by the paint store yesterday to buy a pint of that red paint for a hose reel that I'm working on. To my surprise they charged me $139.00 just for the color.

You can buy optic half rounds made of acrylic. My dad would turn a piece of plastic then cut the threads and epoxy the half round to the machined piece. worked like a champ.

Well I have a little progress to share tonight.
I worked in the garage a bit today and managed to get the jack partially assembled.
I didn't like the cotter keys poking out of all the holes in the wheel shafts or the other pins so I drilled and tapped them where I could and put in polished button head screws. It looks so much cleaner. I salvaged the info tag and freshened it up a bit

I haven't painted the handle yet and I need to get some chrome screws for the cap and mount the info tag then the jack will get to go into the party garage.

DON: WOW and WOW!!!

is that the same paint that you sprayed on the VETTE? or just the same type?

in any case I don't have room for one of those in my small garage, but if it was mine i'd make room in the house and I bet my bride would allow it.

GEESH that is GORGEOUS!!
