I posted in the general garage discussion thread that might not be the best place so i'll post it here also.

I was hopeing there was someone that has taken one of these apart. Is the end cap of the cylinder left or right hand thread? I can't get it loose. Also how tight should the nut be on the pump plunger?

Pump Piston = Just Snug.. You dont want to overtighten the nut as it will draw the face of the seal Inward. I normally stake the Thread to prevent it from backing off.

Tank Nut = standard thread, Lefty loosey - Righty Tighty.

Ok I got the tank nut off. The leather cup was in chunks laying in the cylinder. When I put it back together what should I use to seal the tank to the tank nut on top and the base on the bottom? Normaly I would use silicone but I don't know how the jack oil will react to it.

Reviving an old thread as I have two of these jacks and need to information and opinons One is in good condition while the other is very well worn out probably only parts.
As I have 3 other Walkers 63XXX all similar and have rebuilt 2/3, I am questioning if I should just sell both and only have walkers.

1) is this unit worth the effort to rebuild? Are there any things to inspect for/make unrebuildable before I order a kit?

2) does is have any design flaws making it outdated or not useful?

3) Whats the trick to tank nut removal? a large pipe wrench? I made the tool for the walker tank nut, so thats a possibility should I go forward with rebuilding the better unit.

Yes, they're good jacks and worth rebuilding. As on all jacks, tear it down first and check the condition of both the ram and pump cylinders, as well as the ram and pump pistons, looking for scoring, corrosion, etc.. This assumes all the external hard parts are OK - casters for that will get you into some bucks.

It's your basic floor jack - functionally, should be equivalent to your Walkers.

To remove the tank nut, you'll need a large pipe wrench with a cheater bar and some extra hardware. Here's a link with some pics that show how I removed the tank nut on mine: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=232242&highlight=blackhawk. Those are just some 1/4" dowel pins that allowed me to get a grip on the slots in the nut without tearing it up. They're held in place with magnets. Here's a slightly more sophisticated setup that you can use in conjunction with the pipe wrench:

Thanks HIBALL

"It's missing the valve components, but in regard to soft parts it's complete"

Do you mean the plunger for the the pump? If so, I want to get those in a kit. I know very little about the jack, so everything seal wise is to be replaced

Any seal would be considered a soft part, so yes the pump piston seal is included, what is missing is New Valve Balls and Springs from that eBay link. In my signature is a number for HPS in Kansas, last I knew there SJ2 kit was like $23 + shipping, I believe the only thing they don't include in there kit is the leather that sits behind the Main Ram Piston seal. It's not a vital part as most jacks don't even use one behind there leather piston seals, or you could reuse the old one if you felt compelled. As always.. Check with your local hydraulic shops as its best to patronize local businesses when possible, if the kit/parts can be sourced locally, don't be afraid to shop around, Prices are all over the place online. It's also a good idea to tear into the jack prior to buying a seal kit as things can go awry internally on occasion.

Hope this helps, Good luck.

Hmmm...glad to see I'm not the only one working on one of these.

Mine is the Craftsman version of the SJ-2 best I can tell. It's a 727.12102.

It lifted my car and then it wouldn't pump up high enough to get it off the jack stands. Pumps up about 3" now then nothing...

No leaks, full of oil, no air in the system.

Not sure if something might be stuck in a valve or if I need to do a full rebuild.

Any help would be great. Never had to work on this guy in the 15 years I've had it.
