I've come across an old and very rusty screwdriver. I mean the whole blade is rusty, even the tip is rusted away. The wooden handle is far too nice to throw away, so I'm wondering if anyone has any idea of remove the blade. There a brass ferrule around the handle. I've no idea if i need to remove that too, and no idea how I would go about it. Any ideas?

if you can driver the furl down off of the handle, either split the handle or drive it off. Splitting is probably going to be required.

I would put the screwdriver shaft in a vise and twist the handle back and forth. It is probably also rusted inside the handle and the twisting should make it break loose. You can also drill a hole in a wood scrap, put the shaft through it, clamp the shaft in a vise and pound on the wood with a mallet.

Thanks for the ideas, guys. I removed the ferrule with a knife and a screwdriver, then gripped the blade with a small Vise-grip and twisted it. That was an "oops" moment. There was a cracking sound and the handle split part-way. After a pause, I wiggled the shaft, gently, and out came the blade with no more damage. Its condition is not as bad as I thought, and I might be able to grind the tip back to some kind of usability. The handle will also need some work, and the ferrule should polish up nicely. Here's a photo of the story so far.

Oh my gosh you broke a vintage "AUSETARE" screwdriver with a small fortune (kings ransom)...Oh no the crying in the background (more like sobbing)...

Just teasing you op...On the lighter side of things if you like the handle and you can find someone with a small lathe and you could make your own using some wood either store bought or like I do from trees that others are cutting down in the neighborhood.

If you have a donor screwdriver you could use that blade, you can find good old blades at most boot type sales.

Good job on that "AUSETARE" handle job...Be sure and look that word up!:rocker:

OK, here 'tis. The handle had some paint on it. Getting it off, I removed the old finish. The dark stuff is well and truly ingrained, so I'm calling it "patina". I applied some beeswax and got a nice sheen on the wood, polished the ferrule and filed a tip on the blade. It is now once again a usable screwdriver.
