My daughters gave me some money for Christmas to spend on eBay so I splashed out on this

Maybe it is not so fancy as the Goodfellow version but we alll have to start somewhere.

It does not have the boom for the cables, does anyone have a picture of one of these so I can make one up ??

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Gave it a quick test on the Moggie and the guages and scope appear to be working ok.

Cant seem to get the timing light to work properly although it does give one single flash when you turn it on maybe I need to read a few more instructions !!!

That's a great looking machine!! Congratulations!

If the tester was sitting for a long time I'd double check the connections. Try cleaning the connections with electrical contact cleanner , then examine the cable. I've cured many problems simply by spraying the switch or connection with contact cleaner.

First you get one and then another one comes along at a "you ****"! price level, so what can a man do???

This model has some additional features but lacks the exhaust probe etc but if nothing else it will give me the cable gantry that I was looking for on the first one.

Gauges seem to work fine but the oscilloscope didnt fire up first time so maybe more connection cleaning required.

Well, glad to see the new addition to the garage. It looks a bit used, but if you're like me, having one or two spares on hand is a "good thing". Scope issues are not easy to diagnose --

Today everything is digital and managed by the onboard computer. You set basic parameters in the ECM with a laptop. These old units predate all of that. Pre-ECM cars required these testing tools to accurately diagnose the primary and secondary ignition system.

This reminds me of a story. I used to have one of those Sun testers, complete with the exhaust probe, back in the early '70s. One day a guy I knew drove about 50 miles to bring me a car he couldn't diagnose. I put the inductive probe on number 1 cylinder and turned on the scope. It was obvious that number 3 cylinder had a problem. I went and looked and the plug wire was not attached to the plug. The guy had the reddest face I ever saw (he had changed the plugs before bringing it to me.)

At the risk of showing my lack of age AND lack of knowledge, what exactly do those do?

the scope will show a "pattern" of the voltage in the ignition system so you can tell whats going on in the cylinder. it also has tech, dwell, etc for making adjustments doing a tune up.
