Bleeding a pallet jack?

Good morning guys,

Picked up a pallet jack on the cheap from CL. Figured I could definitely use one in the shop. It was advertised that it needed some work. Went and checked it out, nice unit, looked good for it's age - 1996 BT Lifter L2000-U. It would lift fine empty but wouldn't lift under a load.

Got the unit home and started tearing it down. Quickly realized the steer wheels needed all the bearings replaced. Drained the jack, fluid was pretty nasty. The only thing I could find wrong was a busted seal, or "scraper", in the relief valve piston assembly.

Ordered bearings and a complete seal kit of eBay. Once I get it all put back together, what's the best way to bleed this thing? The jack unit itself has 3 ports - relief valve, drain and fill holes.

Thanks!

Just turn the cylinder apparatus such that any air bubbles that come out will float to the top of the reservoir, and run it through its full cycle a few times.

Ok, I'll give that a shot. Any need to mess with the fill plug at all once the jack is full?

The jack cylinder is vertical and the fill plug is about half way up the housing.

Another option if the 1st suggestion doesn't work:

Hold the release handle and pump the jack handle for a couple of minutes.

Thanks tre873. That makes sense as well. I have the jack assembly tore completely down and I feel certain it will require bleeding once I have it back together.

Wow, a $3 seal got me up and running. It was the big seal under a bronze bushing that the ram slides up and down through. Followed the advice from this post and got it bled out with no issues. Much easier moving stuff around now.

Thanks to all who posted!
