Block a power source and turn on another

I want to wire in a alternate power source for my furnace (inverter and battery are already-now wiring the cord) but don't want to take the chance of both power sources being accidentally on at the same time. Need a switch that delivers power to the furnace but when switched shuts off one supply and enables the other. Seems like there out to be such a switch. Of course I could do it with two but that doesn't make is foolproof.

Yes to the above transfer switches!

What have I done due to my generator capabilities and cheapness? I have my oil furnace connected with a cord and plugged into a dedicated wall outlet. When need arises, I pull the plug out the wall and plug it into a cord from the generator. Heat is on. And an obvious disconnect for service too.
Yeah, there's all sorts of NEC problems with this that make it not allowed.
