Blow mold cases

Good morning,

I would like to get a blow mold case for my 1/4' socket sets.
Instead of gathering what I think I need (and having to come back to my box at least once more), I would like to be able to grab the set all at once.

Any sources?
Optional way that everyone grabs a set (ratchet, extensions, sockets, etc)?

I just use socket racks. One for SAE sizes and one for metric. Grab the correct rack, a couple of extensions and a ratchet and go. Most blow mold cases waste a LOT of space.

Check out Ernst socket organizers. They make organizers that sit on trays that have customizable and detachable clips for sockets and ratchet/extensions. Here's a link:

What brand are the sockets? If they're all the same brand you may be able to find a case from the manufacturer or find a partial set with case on eBay. I have hundreds of sockets, but last year decided I was sick of grabbing random stuff and not having what I need. So I bought a 47 piece set of 3/8" from SK and a 51 piece set of 1/4" from Gearwrench. They have everything I need in one case and now I leave them in my box with the lids off so I can grab one of two items as needed, or I can bring the whole set with me under the hood/vehicle. Then, if I need to take them in the road with me I just snap the lid back on and toss it in the truck. It truly makes things much easier and neater. Here's the 1/4" set. It was only like $60 I think and well worth it.

I would like to get a blow mold case for my 1/4' socket sets.

Craftsman still sells some of their 1/4" sets in blow mold cases. I am using one that is over 20 years old ! (The latch died, so the cover is held closed by some rubber bands.)

I am looking for a replacement, but it needs to hold both SAE and metric standard depth as well as accessories (ratchet, spinner handle, universal and extensions).

I have this one. No space for metric

Since it's not form-fit to a particular set of sockets, it's more generally usable than others. No doubt a socket rail is a good idea here. It mostly becomes a matter of how closely your own ratchet and extensions match the Snap-on form factor.

I would think if you use a blow mold case the tools should be the same brand because the shape of the tools is typically molded in the case.

I have a set of 1/4" drive SAE Craftsman sockets with a blow mold case. The case is the same as the truck boxes Sears sells but they have the molded area to hold the tools. I like it because it holds a complete set of tools and it helps to keep track of all the pieces.

Years ago I purchased a set of Armstrong 1/4" drive SAE & metric sockets that came in a blow mold case. It has a full set of each type of sockets with commonly used drive tools. I like it.

You can try contacting the manufacturer of your tools (if the same brand) and ask them if they will give you the item number for just a case. Another way is to try eBay, or run an ad on Craigslist to find one.

I looked on eBay and asked around here for a case, since there are plenty of folks that buy a set don't use them. Picked up a SK case for my 1/4" Gearwrench Impacts through here, and a MAC case from a buddy of mine for my Williams set.

^ Now that's a good little case right there. Looks like it'll hold a flex head ratchet, which is rare with the blow molded cases.

Yes, those SO general svc sets @ $17 are cheap as anything (because of the free shipping vs buying from ebay).

They will also let you carry a mix of sizes/types -- important stuff today like hex/torx/screwdriver etc specialty sockets. If your work on certain types of application that is reall a useful feature, Imho.The european 1/4 kits all seem to come standard with spaces for these tools. but the USA ones often dont.

What they don't exactly do as well is "tool control" in the sense that you still need rails, and need to double check what is what if using mixed rails. But assuming you use normal 10 or 12pc 1/4 drive sets it should be OK to easily confirm the basics are loaded up before you go. Or you could customize s afoam insert.

Instead of blow molded, would a metal socket box like Wright or Williams work? Depending on the style, it will hold the sockets, extensions, ratchets, etc. You wouldn't be tied to one brand either.

This! I use these and they are good. As The original poster says you are not tied to Snap-On sets that fit. My MAC set fits prefectly.

I was looking for the same thing since I have tons of extra sockets & a few spare cman rp ratchets. The main issues I found were wasted space, ratchet might not fit & many didn't hold sae & metric with deep. I saw the gearwrench set gdocktor3 posted & really liked it. Gearwrench makes great stuff & the price is good if you need a set but I really didn't. Ended up seeing a review of a similar tekton set at a price I was more comfortable with. It's compact & complete with a little empty spot I use for screwdriver bits. No complaints so far.
