Blow up paint booth

Last year I put together a small paint booth using 2x4's and 6mil plastic. It worked well, but when I took it down, I discovered that the way I built it destroyed the plastic.

I'm looking for a paintbooth that can be reused.

I was looking at doing a PVC framed booth wrapped in plastic and using velcro to hold the plastic on. After pricing all the materials, I'm getting really close to the same cost as the blow up paint booths you can buy on Amazon.

I only paint motorcycle parts, so I don't need a very large one. I was able to get around in a 8'x8'x8' booth previously.

I'm considering this one:

Does anyone have any experience with these paint booths?

I have a small pop-up tent type booth I use when painting smaller items.

I have thought about it, but I worry about durability and where to store it safely

Wouldn't it be easier to rent a spray booth?
Not for what I'm doing. There's too many times I need the booth for only a few hours on an evening and then letting the paint dry until the next night when I work on it some more. The last time I sprayed a part it took me 3 weeks. I did primer the first week. The second week I got basecoat and innercoat clear done. Then I wet sanded that. The third week I did the candy coats and final clear.

Plus I'm 20 minutes from the closest paint shop.

The way my shop is laid out, I can move my large workbench off to the side and I have plenty of room in the middle of the shop to put up a paint booth.

Here's a picture of the temporary booth I put up last time.

Here's the pop-up paint booth I use when I'm only spraying one part.

It does a decent job of catching a good amount of the over spray.

Lastly, here's the most recent part I've done in the shop and the color I'm painting the rest of the bike sometime the next few months.

Unfortunately, the wife has put a temporary kibosh on this endeavor. I had mentioned using our 10'x10' pop up canopy as a make-shift paint booth. When I showed her the blow-up booth, her response was, "For $600 you can try the pop-up canopy first." Lucky for me, I'm supposed to get a bonus in March and I always get to spend some of it on whatever I want.... so I'll probably pick one up then. I'll be good riding weather, but I have enough parts to still have the bike useable while I'm painting these parts.

I have one and really like it. Mine is big enough for a car (which is what I use it for). It inflates pretty quickly and I can set it up and take it down by myself.
I also use a turbine sprayer which keeps overspray to a minimum and uses WAY less material. People have complained about the blowers not being powerful enough to get rid of the overspray, but I have not found that to be an issue with the turbine.
Also, some are worried about losing power and having it deflate - if you keep the zippers and velcro covers in place, it takes a VERY long time to deflate - and how often do you really lose power?

They used one of those on an episode of Garage Squad on the MotorTrend Channel.

Bruno "suprised" Joe with it.

I spent many a year in spray booths, in a past life. And I was rather impressed with the inflatable one- I can certainly see the usefulness if someone does painting on an "infrequent" basis.

I tried for months to rent a booth when spraying the car in my avatar. I advertised at car shows, visited several local body shops and placed an ad in Craigslist. I asked at the paint supply place too. Ended up spraying in the driveway as always.

saw one of those blow up booths in a YouTube video I watched this summer before spraying the door on our 2020 Corolla. The main challenge with spraying in a “non-professional booth is the wide swings in temperature you will have. I suggest a new HTE high transfer efficiency gun. It makes a difference with the new paints.

I have a devilbiss spray gun.

The booth size I'm looking at getting will fit inside my temperature controlled shop. I don't paint cars, so the smaller one works.

I also use lazy suzans that I can spin with my foot so I don't have to be able to walk all the way around my parts.

I've been thinking of getting one too. I have at least 2 vehicles that will getting painted in the next couple years. My garage is 31' long with 12' ceilings, so I could easily fit one of the 26' ones inside. We always used to build a makeshift paint booth in my dad's garage while painting cars. It worked, but this would be a lot easier.

Someone asked about renting a paint booth. The booth I'd most likely buy is currently $1,300 on my local Amazon with free shipping. In my local area, paint booth rentals range from $75 to $200 per hour, all the way to $500 for a 10 hour day. Then I have to safely transport the car to that booth and back, and I'd be going as fast as possible because it's a rental. If I set up a portable booth in my garage, I still have control over the environment, but I can take my time and make sure I do as good a job as I can, and give it plenty of time to dry before moving it. Plus I'll be spraying primer before doing the final colour, and one of the vehicles will be 2 different colours so 2 setups and masking, etc., it makes more sense to have something like this. If you only plan to paint once, then renting probably makes sense. If you will paint stuff several times over the years, buying one of these does make fiscal sense.

Barn...and spreading out to random nearby locales
Just bought one for cars and have used it once. We did 2 part epoxy primer, then base/clear on an early 2000s Tacoma. We have also painted a couple tool boxes while it was set up.

It kept shop dust out of the paint and paint dust out of the shop. Yes, we set up inside....no we did not have an explosion or fire.

I was actually surprised how well it handles the overspray. I expected but did not experience a huge cloud especially with the clear. It was not perfect, but worked well and allowed us to paint in non-perfect weather.

I would like to have even more air flow and may modify for this. But it did well enough. We also did build a PVC frame for the inside so we could turn off the blower but leave the car inside overnight. That worked really well. We would like to design some lighting to hang off the tent or the PVC frame. We just had one person hold a light while the other painted. It worked, but more light is always better.

Take down was easy. Just deflate, fold and roll. It actually fit easily into the included bag. Two of us could lift up onto shelving.

Is it perfect---no.
Is it better than painting in the barn or outside...oh yes.
Am I glad I bought it-yes so far with limited use. But I have no reason to think it will fall apart. Even if it lasted 6 cars, it is only $200 per car and I can paint when and where I want. I bet it last much longer than that. I will try to add some pics later. I am typing this on break at work and pics are on my phone.

I will try to link to the one I got.

The tent we bought.

What color(s) is this? It's beautiful.
Thank you.

It's 6 coats of House of Kolor Organic green Kandy over 2 coats of their Galaxy Grey base. The part was primed with their kd3000 Grey surface sealer. The kandy was mixed at max 4:1 with their Urethane Kandy karrier.

This was my first time working with house of kolor kandy paint. It was a huge learning experience.

Looks amazing. I'm looking for a very similar color for my Chevelle. She's getting a T-56 and 12 bolt at the moment, then paint someday.
BTW, I'm just down the road in Rockwall if you ever need a hand wrenching, looks like you've got some cool projects.

When the weather is nice, I paint.

Filtering the air?
My yard backs up to a corn field. There's a breeze pretty much 24x7 off of the field. Even when the weather is nice, there's stuff floating in the air. Trying to paint outside in an unprotected space ends up with all types of debris in your final paint.

Exactly. Last summer with my windows open I got a fine green dust on everything in the house. Pollen. Painting when it's nice without having any air filtration doesn't give much thought to the final product IMO.
