I've been in my house for 12 years now and the furnace is original from 1973.
When I first moved in I had a tech come in for an inspect/clean. It got a clean bill of health with the exception of the blower which was squeaking and I was told it's bearings were going.
Over the years, I've had three service calls and always ask/pay for a cleaning and inspection. Blower squeaking away the whole time.
Yesterday the pilot light wouldn't stay lit so I decided to try replacing the thermocouple. That did the trick and while I was on a roll messing with it I thought I'd see if I could lube the blower. Turns out the blower just slides out and had a 1/8" caked on layer of dirt on everything. A good cleaning later and some oil in the motor, it slid back in and is the squeak is gone. I might be imagining things, but I think there's even more airflow now.
Furnace is in the garage and its aggravating that I put up with that constant squeak for a decade. I just believed the first guy. I don't understand why any of the four guys didn't figure it out and offer the service. If any one of them had said "Hey mister, I pulled the blower and look at how filthy it is. I can clean this and it might help the squeak and maybe even your utility bills, but it'll cost two hours" I would have paid them do it.
Sorry for the rant, I'm just upset with myself for not DIY sooner and with pros in general.
