Blue Point Tools Hack

I don't know if this is technically what the millennials call a hack or not, but if you want Blue Point tools for a good price, read on.

www.hardwarecity.com.sg

Don't remember exactly how I stumbled on them, but this is a chain of hardware stores in SINGAPORE. At first this might sound like some type of scam, but I researched the heck out of this before giving up my info and money and I can say it has worked out for me multiple times. I don't know if it works in every situation, but if you spend a little time and do some math, it might for you.

This company sells numerous brands of tools (including Snap-on), but I focused on Blue Point. Based on their REALLY high prices of Snap-on and low prices of Blue Point, I believe this has to do with manufacture location, shipping, etc. There might be other deals to be had, but I have just been interested in Blue Point. Now their system isn't always the most intuitive and it sometimes is a little tricky to figure out, but it's not terrible if your patient. Just don't expect too much for customer service, English isn't the best if you email back and forth.

Here's how it works.

Take the Blue Point ratchet wrench sets for example - BOER708 and BOERM712. Probably the most common ratchet wrench sets sold in SAE and Metric.

They list on the site for S$150 and S$200 (that's Singapore Dollars). When I go through the cart and checkout system, it takes off the local tax and adds another tax and then adds shipping charges. Sometimes I get a packaging fee, but this time I didn't. Note that the shipping charges are expensive for sure, but don't be discouraged - keep going.

So we end up with a grand total of S$471.14. Right now, that converts to USD $329.93. That is DHL shipped to my door and in my experience arrives within a week.

Compare that to the Snap-on website and current prices are $272 and $409 for the same sets ($681), free shipping but you will likely pay tax - call it $730 give or take local tax rates. That is 55% off of list price!

Tool truck dealers probably do discounts for some of you guys, but I don't have one, and I don't know if you can get that kind of discount (would like to know though).

I haven't checked eBay lately, but I would guess this is similar to used prices - maybe less?!?

Even if you compare to the identical, but harder to warranty, Williams branded wrenches, Amazon currently sells them for $145 and $110 ($255), for a total of $273. So yes, you could get the Williams branded wrenches for roughly $50 less, which might appeal to some. But, I like the ease of Blue Point warranty and for $50 it's worth it to me to have that warranty just a phone call (or tool truck) away.

I have looked into this with pliers, socket sets, all kinds of Blue Point tools. It doesn't always work out, and definitely doesn't work out with anything US made, and might not work out for you -- but if you're looking for Blue Point tools, this is a great way to go.

One final note if you go this way. I use PayPal with them (feel like it adds a little more protection). Beware of foreign transaction fees on your credit card and PayPal currency conversion rates. I choose to purchase in Singapore dollars with a credit card that does not charge foreign transaction fees, so it costs me nothing extra. If you don't check, you might end up with extra charges.

Let me know if you guys use this and get some good deals. I've already gotten my fair share.

I'm sure I took the long way of explaining it, but you're just basically buying tools from a foreign company and taking advantage of lower prices and currency conversion.

Here's another example:

Say you want to outfit a new box with sockets or have a nice road set. Here's a couple sets that between the two would get you just about anything you'd ever need for sockets, ratchets, extensions, adapters, etc.

1665959787561.png
1665959806082.png

Total for both sets is S$450. They add S$195 shipping and an S$8 packing fee this time when I go through checkout. Total is S$653 Singapore Dollars. That works out to $458 shipped to my door by DHL. If I buy the same thing from Snap-on's website that is $685 for just the one set, and then $379 for the other, total of $1064 or call it $1138 after tax. That is 60% less than MSRP!

Play around and see what you can find and let me know if you guys find some other great deals on there!

Amazon has the Williams sets (same as Blue Point) for $145 (12pc Metric) and $110 (8pc SAE). I own these and they are great. Cryertool.com is also a good site for Williams domestically.

Do gray market Blue Point tools have a warranty? I know that gray market camera gear is discounted, but doesn't have a US warranty.

Unless they carry different part numbers how would they know. Kind of like buying tools used.

I've never been asked for proof of purchase before for any warranty claims, but I did a quick search and don't see anything in the warranty that specifically mentions US sales or same country or anything, only mention is through "authorized channels." I suppose we could dig in and see if Hardware City is an authorized channel, but they are a chain of stores and sell a lot of major brands, so I would lean toward yes. But then again, I'm not going to start inquiries and make noise and put things on the radar when I don't have reason to...

If they are identical than you will never be questioned unless some newbie thinks you need to show proof of purchase.

I'd be curious if they're legit Blue Point products or just good fakes.

They do come from a chain of stores that sells major brands. That on itself might be a good indicator. I know a lot of things can be faked, but I really think it would be difficult to fake entire sets of tools, roll stamps, laser engraving, cases and packaging. I have bought a number of things and it all looks legit to me. Happy to take closeup pics or whatever though if curious.

Yeah but I highly doubt they are an authorized retailer of Blue Point tools lol.

I get it. I don't remember how I came upon them, and it sounds crazy - maybe even like a scam. But, in other countries retail sales are not always handled the same way as in the US. I have no idea if there are tool trucks running around Singapore and other similar countries, but they sure do need tools. How else could Snap-on get into the market if there are no tool trucks? They would either have to open their own stores or sell in other retail stores.

I dug in and tried to as much homework on these guys as I could before I took the initial chance. They are a legit business with brick and mortar locations as well as their website and they sell all the same major brands we see in typical hardware stores here, plus some I wish we could find. As far as I can tell they've been around for many years. Their website says since 1979 and I have no reason not to believe it.

My assumption is they are an authorized retailer, but no- I'm not going to call Snap-on and ask and open that can of worms.

So I owned that 155pc socket set up until it was stowln this year. Paid 300 bucks off the tool truck years ago for it. Only difference I see is it doesnt have a separator lid over the ratchets and top items like mine did. Looks to be legit and unless I can gind another tool guy willing to cut me a deal I will be ordering that set to replace my stolen one. Thanks for the heads up on this site.

It actually does have the separator/knee pad thing, it's just not shown in those pics. I just got mine in - it looks like a really nice set. Glad it helped!

You can also buy Williams. Lots of the line is identical

I mentioned Williams tools in my first post, and I have some. No complaints. They are identical to Blue Point and good quality for sure. But the warranty is the difference, and everyone will have to make their own decisions on that value.

I can say for sure if I didn't know about this availability and my options on ratcheting wrenches were $730 Blue Point vs. $273 Williams, there would be no contest. But my opinion changes when the difference comes down to $50. I'll take Blue Point all day long for that.
