Draftsight is a free CAD program that is nearly as good as AutoCAD LT. It uses the same commands has the same icons and is very powerful. I learned CAD using AutoCAD and am very comfortable using Draftsight. The free version does not run LISP.. so if you need to run scripts, the Pro version may be better for you.

This company also makes Solidworks...the Parametric 3D software. This company knows what they are doing.

another +1 for sketchup. the free version doesn't have all the features i guess as the pro or whatever, but it doesn't stop working after x amount of days. just a lighter featured free version. it's pretty handy.

styx, i'm not sure what version you're running. if you use wine, there's an article here from june 2014 on installing sketchup via wine in ubuntu 14.04 lts. hope it helps.

I use Cad Standard (http://www.cadstd.com/). The lite version is free but the full version, which adds a couple of notable features, is only $37.50. IMO a competent draftsman could use the pro version to draw full floor plans and work drawings for a house or garage.
