I know this has been discussed here before, but I cannot find the threads.

I am looking for a Bluetooth OBD II reader and an app to read and diagnose the data for my ipad.

Any suggestions?

Vgate scan for the reader. About 25.00. Torque for the app. This is what I use and it is leaps and bounds better than the cheap stand alone readers.

I use torque as well with an el cheapo Bluetooth adapter off eBay. I believe Torque is an Android only app.

This is the one i bought and it's worked on the 4 different cars/trucks i've played with it in. Torque app as well, about $36 total wrapped up in everything and i love it. Pin pointed my exact problem in which i bought this stuff for to begin with, and am having fun playing with the live guages screen and seeing everything the vehicles are looking at to make it's own corrections on parameter.

It may be that the torque app is'nt available for the Iphone. my brother has one and he cant get alot of the apps i and his other android buddies get with our server, but i would have to think applw would have some sort of app to support/do the same thing the torque app does for us.

Yep, Apple won't give you break for a decent OBDII scan tool. I actually converted an apple person to go over to the dark side. He was so pissed at the fact that I had the torque app for 5 bucks and the best he could do was around 90.

After more research; seems this adapter is "officially Apple-approved" adapter that is Bluetooth: (costs more then Chinese generic adapters but guaranteed to be compatible and supported with the iPhone)

http://gopointtech.com/

and another company: PLX:

Cheaper Generic Chinese version:

Thanks for the links.. I will have to look into these for my iPad!

Go ahead and jail break and get around Apple's "pay us a licensing fee or your Bluetooth device won't work with iOS" BS.

I'm using one of the cheap Bluetooth adapters with my iPhone and it works great. I use Dash Command, but also installed Torque on my wife's Android phone and frankly, it is a better app for far less money. Dash Command looks pretty, but isn't easily customized, so you are often left either having to constantly go between pages to view data, or view it in a text only format if you can't find a skin that includes a sensor you want to monitor.

Eobd looks pretty good and works with a 25 dollar elm327 wifi. It's European but is supposed to be fully North American Compliant. I have played with it a little and it seems to do what they say it will. I haven't spent enough time with it to be able to know the ins and outs of it. The latest version has no reviews but the previous version has good reviews.

I have used both the bluetooth and the wifi version. The wifi is garbage compared to bluetooth. The reaction time is wayyyyy too slow if you are doing any serious data logging. If you just need it to clear codes, then either is fine.

I heard you can jailbreak the iphone to allow you to log via bluetooth but not eure how to do this. This is the thing that I miss the most on my android.

Completely agree. Dashcommand wishes that it could be Torque. Torque is 10x more powerful easily.

By the way, how did you get your bluetooth to sync with the iphone?

Well... Sorry guys, but an android app ain't gonna work for this apple dude.
Any suggestions for an Ipad ...

Yep, buy an Android! :lol_hitti

Seriously: there are a bunch of really cheap Android tablets out there, and face it: in the shop it's a rough environment. Save the iPad for in the office/home use.

Bluetooth works better.
If you have iPhone 4S or later, no jailbreak is needed. They work with Bluetooth Low Energy right away, no pairing is needed.
I have the LELink adapter plugged in my car since i got it last year, really like it.

A lot of folks are talking about data logging so I just wanted to share what I use (www.autotap.com).

Sorry, it only works with a laptop but you can customize all gauges to look exactly like your car, and even set thresholds/alarms that will also make your custom gauges emit an alarm or change color at certain points (i.e. like when you are testing for a bad coil and want to know when the RPM's drop or go higher than a set RPM number). The best part is the data logging, record and playback feature. You can also run your own emission tests and, of course, clear all codes. It's about $250-$300 but can also be bought as a bundle for a little less. They also have sale pricing every now and then.

I bought a cheap 40$ Android tablet during black friday just for this. I can keep it in the garage and not worry about it being broken. I use a Cheap amazon bluetooth adapter and Torque Pro. I also you Car Gauge Pro for more advanced diagnostics. Works very well and has diagnosed some pretty advanced problems.
