Well it's been a while since I started rebuilding this motor, but I'm getting near the end. Putting the garage to good use during this cold spell. Enjoy.

Went against Junkman's suggestion to NOT powder coat stuff, so hopefully he will be wrong and it will last. :)

I think it was money well spent...

Assuming that chain is a timing chain. That is one hell of a timing chain!

The powder coat will hold up nice on accessories, not exhaust manifolds.

Nice!

I think I saw a spec of dust on the floor in one of the photos...

Oh - never mind - it was a piece of lint on my monitor. Sorry for the false alarm.

What car is it for, I don't see any 4-cyl BMWs on your list. Looks purdy though.

I just saw on the other board, guess it's an M42 eh? You have another toy you aren't telling us about? You upgrade any of the specs or is it a stock rebuild?

Nah, it's just stock, low mile so the bottom end did not get touched. It will be going in a 91 318ic (you can see it in one of those picts) that I will be selling...

Well, my E30 Cylinder head finally got here. While my garage is not as nice as that by far and I plan on doing the head and freshening with the engine in the car, I'm looking forward to it. Did you replace everything on the engine? That darn plastic water pipe cracked on mine when I was driving it home form work last year. The coolant dumped out, pegged the temp, warped the headgasket and cracked the head.

I wish my build would end up looking that nice. What did you use to get the cosmoline off? Hot tank it? Any tips on the profile gasket?

I loved the way it ran and the way the car handled though.

Yea, I'm replacing a LOT of stuff, all the timing chain setup and guides, VAC rebuilt head, etc....new water pipe, too.

I cleaned the parts somewhat and then took them to a powdercoating place. They clean and prepped everything and then coated the parts. I just couldn't stand putting the parts back on in the condition they were in. Hopefully it will be a testiment to my work when it goes up for sale. :)

That profile gasket is not a big deal, just follow the torque specs and install instructions online. If you need links to manuals, let me know.

Yea, it's a 4 banger. It's all about FUEL ECONOMY, man. Not something a Cobra driver would really know about, eh? :bounce:

I live my car life by three credos:

1. There's more to life than gas mileage.

2. Life's too short to lack torque.

3. If it's not cammed, blown or stroked, you're wasting my time.

^ ^ ^ bmw did say it was a stocker. How about this?...

Link--> Reflash, Green, 2 liters and 507 lbs.ft/443 whp..

Now up to 445 hp / 513 lbs.ft... not at the flywheel... at the WHEELS!
BTW no giant turbo here... No lag...
Yup, 3000 lb "Daily Driver" running 10.6@130mph. Enough torque for yuh? :lol2:

BTW wythors, nice garage.

Okay where does the key to wind her up go? :lol_hitti

I'm thinking since I now have a ton of time to do this job I just might go the cheap route and either clean and paint each metal part with either high temp enamel silver or black (but it won't show oil leaks so maybe no-go) or just scrub everything real good with brass bristle wheels.

I have a few links to some manual sites but when I have questions I'll hit up some folks.

Did you have any trouble with the front crank timing gear bolt? I'll probbaly get into that soon.

Yea, I thought about painting things myself, but the last time I did that (Ford truck) I spent so much time on it and the results came out crappy, that I decided to pay someone else to do it.

I didn't have any trouble with the front crank bolt since I bought the holding tool. It was only like $30 or so I think.

The m42 is a great little engine and has lots of potential. You can stroke it to around 2.1 L and get around 205hp out of it. I have one in my e30 and just swapped one into my 1970 2002.... They are both stock at the moment. Waiting for my new garage to be built.... 24 x 36 with 10' ceilings. I would like bigger but this is as large as the city allows...so it will work out.

NICE bimmerpwr! I recently came over to the dark side after decades of ignoring the roundel cars, and bought a 135i for my spouse to celebrate her liberation from minivan purgatory. Hoping to get some track tires and borrow it once Thunderbolt opens this summer! 135 is built and enroute to US, should take delivery march 31.

Thanks!

Please stop by here on the way to Tb! I'm really liking the 135 on paper and I am really tempted to sell my daily driver and get one...

Here she is all back together. She still need a bath...Any buyers?

The killer for me on the 135I is the lack of a real LSD. The using of the brakes to keep the traction in the rear, may be safer but it removes 2 of the things I love in BMWs. 1 the tail happy fun that can be had. 2 the feel. They are supposed to be drivers cars, I had high hopes for the 135I but will not count it out till I get some seat time but I think I will pass on it.
