So I’m into BMW’s (old and new) and Chevys and brand new to GarageJournal. Figured I would make a nice place to keep a timeline / journal for myself, and if others appreciate it along the way thats great too.

Backstory:

32 year old Structural Engineer, avid DIY-er. Married with two sons (3&4) a third coming in February. Have been a gearhead all my life.

Bought house in 2012 (foreclosure). House was built 2003 by previous owner. Its semi-custom and completely different than the rest of the neighborhood. Garage is attached 34x34 14.5’ ceilings. 8.5x18 double door with another 10x10 service door.

Floor Space was mostly empty with the exception of an upper deck storage area and the stairs leading into the house. Walls and ceiling were bare drywall, but it was insulated and had decent insulated garage doors.

With the ceiling height I knew would be perfect for some lifts to support my auto hobbies. I store a very good friends racecar along with my own in here and stacking them works great. The garage is deep enough to tandem park the race cars and wife’s X5.

2013: I started by repurposing some used kitchen cabinets from a cousin. Turned out to be the perfect quantity to achieve a nice layout under the space I already had. Painted them red. Hung them under the storage area to crate the workspace. A guy near me sells old semi trailer deck oak planks on the cheap so I snatched a few of those and refinished them for the worktop.

2014: I painted the walls, ceiling, cased the windows. Drywall seams were never properly finished so the ceiling doesn’t look good but thats fine with me (for now). Setup Dart Board, Put beer fridge under workbench. Put in stereo I bought from Craigslist on the cheap.

2015: Ordered and installed the lifts. Greg Smith Equipment is my kind of candy store for sure, and I definitely have a sweet tooth I need to keep under control. Received “blown up” stand up air compressor from uncle. Rebuilt pump, now works perfectly. Put in auto hose reel. Bought stand up oil drain for oil changes.

2016: HEAT - Installed a Hot Dawg to keep me comfortable during the winter. Previously was using 100lb propane tanks with burners and no proper ventilation... not good. Inherited Kard-Veyer from wife’s grandfather. My favorite piece in the whole shop. Her grandfather had been using this thing as a tool box and I had admired it from day 1. It was in rough shape but cleaned up really nicely. To this day I have never seen another one being used as tool storage.

2017: Built tire rack at work, anchored it to the wall. I swap snow tires on 3 vehicles for family and also have a lot of race tire sets so tire storage was becoming a serious problem. Rebuilt M10 2.0L Race Motor on the 1600. Promptly blew it up. Installed water line on back wall for hose / car washes.

2018: Year of cleanup / organization and preparation for future plans. Have been working on Duramax mods and a Friend’s WRX quite a bit. Added more workbench lighting.

My current list of Future Plans / Wishlist:

* Replace south wall shelving with a 15’ wide NewAge storage system. Red of course. New upper cabinets on North wall for wife / gardening stuff.

* Epoxy Floor

* New staircase. I will design it and fabricate it at work. I am thinking all steel design. Will post plans once I get around to it.

* 5S foam in main toolbox.

* Create wood shop in part of unfinished basement.

* Stain or epoxy foundation wall on North and West Sides.

_____________________________________

I plan on posting some work zone photos of each space and will reserve some posts for those.

Painted stem wall with a solid stain from SW. Thinking of using hellfire on the floor.

Alright, another bimmer guy in town. I don't recognize the 1600, but I'm sure we must have some friends in common.

I race with Rocky Mountain Vintage Racing (RMVR). There is a group of 7-10 race prepared 2002s at most of our events.

Cool! I know a couple of the 02ers - Wayne (because he also has an e9) and Ryan. I've talked to Rick a few times, but he's an NK guy. I'm hoping to be out at Snowmass later this year.

I've raced with RMVR guys at Hallett on multiple occasions when I was racing with CVAR. Great group. Took the old 911 off the track because of the value and am now racing a 944 with PCA. 944 isn't vintage eligible.

You can petition the board to allow entry. If you have a fuel cell and a VMC license then its almost guaranteed entry.

New Cabinets & Stem wall Stain

One of my main goals was to get as much stuff as possible off the floor, and obviously improve the aesthetics.

Garden Area Before:

Made a my interpretation of a Project Center this weekend. You will notice my affinity for DeWalt tools for woodworking.

Lots of different features built in and designed to be ready to access and start work immediately. The main reason I built this was I had a lot of great tools in the shop but setup and teardown was always burdensome. This way the actual access to tools is always at hand for long term projects or short term spur of the moment projects.

______

Highlights:

Table Saw, Miter Saw, Router Station, Planer, Onboard Dust collection system, onboard air compressor, kreg track system with pocket hole workpiece.

Current issues: needs better casters, harbor freight was a poor choice on my part. I ordered a set rated to 3600lb should be here Wednesday.

______

Future additions: Fold out / hinged outfeed and side supports for table saw.

Kreg production track system for miter saw.

______

“Weekend” Project I Started from scratch around 6PM Friday, got to this point by 1AM Monday.

Current photos:

The turf started off as a joke but I actually have grown to like it for most situations. For other situations its easy to roll up and remove but for day to day stuff it actually keeps stuff from sliding around.

Did a bunch of work on truck lighting. Switchback mirror led’s, white marker lights, all new projectors, LED high beams, LED fog lights.

Re: BmwTie’s Werkshop

Wow.

That is quite a space there, and the work-station with the dust collection ...all of the screws done with the kreg jig (which I love, by the way).

very nice.

Oh I am in this thread for sure. Beautiful 02's, I think I am about to start building my 74 for the track.

Highly recommended move!

The season is right around the corner I will have to wake them up from hibernation soon!

Had some extra 2x6 and 2x4 and those HF casters so i decided I could use it to build a quick trash cart to take the trash cans to the curb. Driveway is 200ft of rock so taking the trash out is a difficult chore that just got a lot easier.

So far I love it . I wouldn’t complain if I got better mileage in town .
Other than that 👍 I’m thinking about a tuner from Stealth
To help out with that and improve performance a bit.

Day 1 of Kaizen Foam. Now addicted.

Good opportunity to clean out the boxes and get rid of junk I don’t need or that is redundant.
