Does anyone have pictures of their boat friendly garages? I am working on designs for a new house and garage taking in consideration a spot for the boat. I have a 21' wakeboarding/ski boat and would really like a spot where i could keep the tower up, but most likely the garage will be a 3 car attached. Looking for ideas and suggestions...

Wow - a sunken section would be cool - You could get REALLy creative and have removable ramps so you could drive your car on the ramps and get down in the sunken part to do your oil changes like a grease pit. But that is just crazy thinking/brainstorming.

On a different note - I have seen 3 car garages with one of the bays having a much taller door/bay for taller vehicles.

You've got a little bigger setup than my father-in-law. He has a 18ft runabout and the trailer has a swinging from hitch section - and it fits in his oversized two car. Of-course now he bought a lake house and the boat stays down at the lake on the lift.

How tall is the boat on the trailer with the tower up? We keep our boat in the garage during the winter. The windshield just barely clears our 8ft tall door on the trailer, we do have to drop our bimini to get it in. You can always design for a tall door, 8ft is as I remember the max height without buying a custom door.

For inspiration, check of the DIY Network Show "Garage Mahal" episode called Guy Garage Gear. They filmed the makeover of Mike and Courtney Branning's garage in Knoxville, TN. It was basically an empty 3 car garage they did up to store his boat and other toys.

Mike was big into wakeboarding, so they built this really cool platform to enter/exit the boat that had stairs made of wakeboards.

So, what's the overall length of the boat, trailer, and drive unit? (Be sure to measure the stern drive in the position you normally store it!!) Does it have a swing away trailer tongue? That's the biggest problem I see with boats in garages. The owner usually ends up having to store it at an angle so it'll fit then that prevents them from putting another car in there.

Have you checked this out?

I may have dreamed this, but I swear it's true. I was out on a huge lake, and some of the lake front homes had garages built right next to the lake, with rails running out the door into the lake. I assume this was for some kind of carriage that would pull the boat up into the garage. Anybody ever seen anything like this. Some of the other houses also had carports beside the docks for the boats.

Most definately, we vacation in Northern Minnesota and it is quite common for this. They have ramps with a winch setup that pulls them up out of the water into a "garage" on the shore. Nice way to get ready for winter.

10' wide door will feel really tight when you put an 8'6" wide boat in to it- my recommendation is go full 16' for the tall door, and then a standard single door.

Many pickups and large SUVs have issues with standard height doors as well so don't feel bad about a 10' or taller door (I went 16wx14h so anything legal to move on roads can fit into my shop)

To keep rooflines from looking too odd you can do a lot in a gable end and keep overall height looking reasonable, depending on the lot you could have ~2' retaining wall in middle of driveway to terrace down to get the height you need.

Make sure that you make it plenty deep to be able to upgrade the boat -- it happens and even the runabout boats keep getting bigger - I remember when I was a kid and my parents had a 24' cruiser that had full galley, head, slept 6, now you see 24' open bow boats that might have a porta-potty.... they grow.

I don't know how you're currently storing your boat, but make sure you have at least 2 feet extra width per side and at least 3 feet behind the boat. Nothing is worse than backing into a narrow stall (except scraping your prop guard up a hill). As for keeping the tower up, you are going to need something ridiculous tall.

I was wondering if there were any other boaters on this site. I have a 19ft Checkmate, it fits straight into my almost 24x24 garage with 2 inches between the door and the tounge of the trailer. I have talked several times about building a stairway with a small deck on top to keep in the garage. It would make it so much easier to get in and out of the boat when its in the garage. Drives me crazy climbing in and out of it.

Not much interest in boats here.

In the mitten state. I'm from the sorry no restroom state. My buddy has a steel building, and he pulls his sail boat in, and winches it up from the ceiling, then puts blocking under the keel for bottom work.

A nice way to access the whole underside.

I had a dropped floor with same roofline as the rest of the shed for a boat that was 10' high to the top of the canopy. Boats gone now but it worked well, just back it in, no pulling anything off. The hill sloped down from the doors and made it easy to do with a little retaining wall to keep the shed walls the same just longer doors on the boat bay. hope this makes sense.

I've built a cpl boat houses on water...millionair crowd...sorry no pics.Reason for posting however is your "deck" or maintenance issue........go snag some Safeway scaffolding....they come in 2',3',4',5',and 6' heighth's.Get corresponding braces/decking and if you don't want to fab up the stairs, for a price you can buy them from same man. as scaffolding.Anyhow make your deck out of them...when not in use pop M apart and throw them behind shop.

They also work as intended and can assist greatly for in the shop maintenance chores, especially with their locking wheelset. You can buy them @ tool rental places that are vg cond. used. This (rental joint used price)is your $$ gage when buying them on open market,CL,Evilbay, ect.BW

Well we don't live on the water but I plan (read as dream) to have storage for an 18' deap V fishing boat someday. This will be incorporated into my shop that I plan (read as dream). The boat will be in one bay on a 4 post above my work truck, thus leaving bay #2 for working on things.

I have a 21' Supra wakeboard boat, and I'm building my garage to fit it as well.

My garage will be used as boat, and rockcrawler storage/maintainence. It's a 30x40 with 14' tall walls. The boat door will be 12'x12'. Plenty wide for any of the newer wakeboard boats. And the 12' should clear almost any boat with a tower on the trailer. I know it will clear Nautiques and Malibus.

I know these are not what you have in mind but they are pretty neat lakeside boat houses. Most of the photos are from the Maskoka lake region in Ontario.

I have '01 Super Air Nautique, on trailer its 103" wide and doesnt have a swing away trailer currently my garage is 27' deep so it can fit in there, but because of width makes it hard to get 2 cars in the garage. If i remove the swim platform i prob only need the garage to be a little under 23'

I did see that post on wakeworld Mike, kind why i thought to bring it up here.

here is only picture i have on me right now

well so far it looks like the garage is just going to a be a 3 bay. ceilings are going to be ~12' so will just have to lower the tower to get it in, then i can put it up if i need.

I'd like to build a garage for my boat (Moomba Mobius XLV, 23'). Nothing I hate more than having to store outside or break the tower down... height is the only issue I have with mine, that and that the garage at least has to be 9' wide door.

However, this toy garage project is going to be out and only a dream for at least the next year.

Started building the house, I have the width, height (~12') but depth (just over 22') is going to be tight. I slip the boat during season so might have to get creative with tongue, but since its a one time thing a year i should be able to figure something out. It will be nice to be able to have tower up in garage while i work on it!

I've always had boats and to me the issue is more width than length related. Plus boats typically have way more gear than most people anticipate. I have a 21' Sun Tracker Party Deck and she is a tall girl. She would just barely squeeze under a 7' garage door. No tower on her. Consider the swing of the boat into and out of the garage. On a trailer mine is about 27' long and it's a good fit in my 33' deep garage. Ideally, though I would have had room for cabinets (and room to open their doors) directly behind the boat. Think of how often you are loading and unloading gear. I'd at least plan for some storage lockers to store all the stuff that goes along with the boat.

The sunken idea sounds good but then you'd have to worry about drainage and not catching the trailer on the edge.

Nothing takes up real estate like a boat out of water... or an airplane in a hanger!!! At least with an airplane depending on what you have... you can park stuff under the wings!:)

There was a guy in my old neigborhood who had a small notch cut out of the bottom of his garage door for the tongue of his trailer. When the door was closed it kind of looked like the whole garage was a trailer with a small tongue sticking out the front. He did a pretty good job so it just looked weird, not terrible.

I should forward to one of my neighbors in the sub. His garage is small but he stored his boat in the garage all winter. This meant leaving the garage door wide open with his BBQ and tool chests and everything else in the garage. I was surprised he was that trusting.

Here are a couple of pictures of my garage giving birth. I was able to stand up the tower inside the garage. Fortunately I only have to do this one a time.
